Rating: Summary: Terrible Review: Don't waste your time. I am trying very hard to forget I ever read it. It can ruin the original Rebecca for you if you let it.
Rating: Summary: Sincere disappointment in Susan Hill Review: As an avid fan of Rebecca, I couldn't contain my excitement at the thought of a sequel. That excitement dimmed when it came to my attention that Daphne du Maurier hadn't taken on the project of continuing Rebecca, but a relatively unknown author had. When I began this book, I was immediately critical of Susan Hill's attempt to continue the magical romance story of Rebecca. Perhaps I would have enjoyed it more if Mrs. de Winter was a solo book, because it couldn't compare with its fabulous counterpart, Rebecca. I thought it a tragedy that a book with such magnificence should be followed up with a meager attempt at comparison. The writing style was somewhat boring, the plot despicable, and the ending absolutely HORRENDOUS! Had Susan Hill a bit more imagination or a better ability to write, Mrs. de Winter might have been more enjoyable. All in all, I wish Miss. Hill had kept her thoughts about what happened to Mr. and Mrs. Maxim de Winter to herself, so those of us who unbelievably enjoyed Rebecca, could continue to day dream about the possiblities of their future without Manderly. Now all I have is a tragic, and very nearly, stupid ending to remind me of the life of the second Mrs. de Winter and her encounter with the all powerful, Rebecca.
Rating: Summary: Review for Susan Hill's Mrs. de Winter Review: I read Rebecca and I absolutely LOVED the story, so I decided to buy the sequel. It was pretty good, but it wasn't the kind of ending I wanted the book to have. If you are just dying to read it, I certainly can not stop you, I am just advising you to be prepared for an ending that you never would have expected! Hey, and by the way, you should rent Rebecca on video. It is really good!
Rating: Summary: Atrocious! Review: Don't waste your time, what a big flop! Nothing like "Rebecca"! Daphne DuMaurier would roll in her grave right about now! Awful!
Rating: Summary: why bother??? Review: It was nothing new; just a rehash of Rebecca. It started out fine, but the ending was too abrupt and had no point. I have to ask: why did Hill even bother writing this??
Rating: Summary: horrible waste of time Review: I think this is the only time I have been sorry that I read a book. I kept reading it because I thought something was actually going to happen but it was such a waste of time I was angry when I finished it. I agree with the other review I saw that said it never should have been written.
Rating: Summary: Oh dear!! Review: What a shambles! A book with some beautiful descriptions- but not much content!! It carries on the story of Rebecca and is not what you would expect. On one hand hand, however, it is only one womans opinion of what should happen next... on the other how on earth she got the rights to go ahead and destroy the book in the first place will be the books first and foremost mystery!! The De Winters wander aimlessly around Europe- and Mrs. De Winter is portrayed as a sheep who only ever notices how many leaves blow across the pavement, and what colour the table cloth is. She spends to much time thinking, and not enough time doing. Maxim was supposed to be relieved of his guilt after Rebecca... but that is not so. The ghost should be Maxim De Winter... he is genuinely a shadow of a man that was... flicker of life is ever found there!! Points for descriptions: 10/10 Points for story: 0/10 the best line in the book being: "... he had gone into the past and into his own, private, closed up world, the one he had re-entered the day the news had come to us and into which I could never follow him." This seems to be what the book is about... I think...
Rating: Summary: Never should have been written Review: A disastrous attempt at mimicking a classic.
Rating: Summary: Very disappointing Review: Do not waste your money. Instead, watch the movie and read Rebecca again. It is a poor conclusion to to a wonderful story. What a shame.
Rating: Summary: Pointless Review: I absolutely loved Rebecca and Susan Hill could just not 'do' Du Maurier. The whole first two tapes (or about the first half of the book) is utterly pointless! The are just wandering around Europe and being Completely paranoid. The only reason I'm giving any stars is because she does write descriptions of things well, I enjoyed the last 3 sentences of the book, and the narrator was good. Other than that I was really disapointed. If you haven't read this sequel yet, I would suggest you not and keep the ending as Daphne Du Maurier left it. Beleive me a flaming Manderly is a better end than this novel disastor.
