Rating: Summary: An Intelligent and Fun-To-Read Mystery Review: I love a well-told and well-written mystery and not only does this book fit the bill, it also was very fun-to-read. I absolutely loved the main character, Patricia Conley, and I loved her attitude throughout the book. I found myself rooting for her one moment, thinking what she was thinking the next, and then laughing out loud at some of her actions and thoughts. Evelyn Coleman's writing was fantastic and I loved how she figured out a way to incorporate science and history without slowing down the story. Fans of Valerie Wilson Welsey's Tamara Hayle series of mysteries definitely ought to give this one a try. It was my first visit to the world of Patricia Conley, but, if Evelyn Coleman decides to write more books with this character, I'll definitely give them a try.
Rating: Summary: Not what I expected, but very interesting Review: Though it appears at first glance to be another relationship novel, this book is actually a sci-fi thriller. This genre never really appealed to me, but I enjoyed this book nontheless. The heroine is so scrappy and tough that you just have to love her. Patricia Conley is a female black belt who is kicking azz and taking names on her quest to get to the root of what happened to her fiance -- a descendent of the Dogon tribe who had been part of nefarious eugenics experiment. Things are never what they seem in this tale, and there are many subplots. One of the previous reviewers complained that the heroine was unrealistic, but such is the nature of sci-fi. You have to be willing to suspend the natural instinct toward disbelief or you won't be able to get into the story. I had an easier time accepting Conley's disguises than I did the visions of the Dogon elder and his shack. The book is long, but there is plenty action and suspense to keep the story moving along at a good pace. Coleman's scientific research is reflected the depth of this metaphysical tale, and her thank yous include some of the authors cited in the story. I read the whole book in one day while I was stuck in the beauty parlor. When I was done, I had a head full of micro braids and a new author to watch.
Rating: Summary: The Title is Deceiving... Review: Just by reading the title of this book you would think that is just another relationship novel... NOT! WOW, every twist and turn you can think of is between these pages. Ms. Coleman (a well known children's writer) is definitely a welcomed participant in the literary adult fiction arena.
Rating: Summary: Is There Anything A Woman Can't Do? Review: Evelyn Coleman has outdone almost every other author out there! WHAT A WOMAN'S GOTTA DO has so many secrets, crooks, twists and turns that it's almost unreal that all of this can come from one person's imagination! First of all, I would like to say that I'm not even a fan of anything that has ANY element of science fiction in it and I hardly ever read mysteries because there just aren't that many good ones out there, but WHAT A WOMAN'S GOTTA DO had science fiction elements, mystery, conspiracy theories, government plots and action and all these elements came together in the most spectacular way! Every little thing had a meaning...for goodness sakes, even the cover of the book has a few secrets in it. The main character, Patricia Conley, accidentally gets involved in a government scandal. She fights against police, scientists and government officials who think that she knows things that could alter the balance of long-term, top secret governement operated projects. Words can't do justice to just how fantastic this novel is. If there ever were a book that could not be put down, it is WHAT A WOMAN'S GOTTA DO by Evelyn Coleman.
Rating: Summary: Good theme but character wasn't quite believable Review: Overall this was a good book. The concept of the dogons and dna altering was good but the antics of the main character were a little much. The book reads as though you are watching televison and Pat Conley often comes off like 'Get Christy Love' from the 70's. The convenient disguises the character changed into at will detracted from the plausibility. But, this was a good first effort. It could have been thinned out a bit. Tananarive Due's novels (My Soul to Keep and The Between) would be a good example of this type of book at its best. I wish the author success in future efforts.
Rating: Summary: Wonderful! Review: I thought that this book was an exciting, brilliantly written thriller! I truly enjoyed reading this. I literally could not put the book down for hours until I completed it. I was impressed with the way the author combined African history with genetic engineering and race issues. It was truly a well thought out and intelligent story! The characters were clear and believable, the storyline was not farfetched when compared to the society that we live in. It was a story of greed, lies and racial superiority; all of which we encounter in the news and in our lives daily. Evelyn Coleman shines with her first adult thriller! What everybody's gotta do is read this book!
Rating: Summary: A thriller with heart Review: As a big thriller fan, I loved reading "What a Woman's Gotta Do," which not only has all the suspense and plot twists one could ever want, but also features a vulnerable, all-too-human protagonist. The heroine's fears and personal history serve to heighten the suspense and give her the kind of depth that one doesn't always find in thriller characters. She's a smart, strong, sassy, likeable woman I'd like to meet again.
Rating: Summary: Spell Binding Book Review: I found this book to be highly stimulating! It covered many areas--love, trust, religion, race, and African History. This book was fast pace and well written. I enjoyed how the author was able to merge the areas. This book is the gold standard for suspense thrillers. I truly look forward to her next book.
Rating: Summary: What a Woman's Gotta Do Review: Excellent supspense novel with love, betrayal, action and educating content. The book is well written and well suppported by facts.
Rating: Summary: Not Worth the Wait Review: This complicated, well thought out mystery started out with a bang, but as soon as the main character started her long, dangerous journey to find out what happened to her boyfriend, it was downhill all the way. Though I admire Ms. Coleman's sense of humor and the knowledge she displays on the subjects she introduced, I found there to be too many twists and turns in the plot, thereby taking away from the enjoyment. Most of the book I found to be just plain BORING. The subject matter was one of interest, it just took much too long to get to the climax. The old adage "I Love a Mystery" just didn't apply here.
