Rating: 5 stars
Summary: I love Sydney Sloane!
Review: Fully drawn human beings abound in this series. Sydney Sloane is a lesbian private detective with a straight male partner, a secretary who's an actress, and a case which just ended very, very badly. A child she was sent to track down and bring home has killed herself rather than return to her abusive home. Now another client wants Sydney to find out why her younger brother died. Tired, feeling her age (she now needs glasses to read her reports), and involved in family struggles of her own (her girlfriend hates her profession), Sydney wonders if she's up to investigating another child's death.

Of course, she perseveres. She's a strong, competent, compassionate woman and a nose-to-the-clues detective. Good suspense salted with touches of humor. Excellent writing.
