Summary: Terrific Read
Review: I picked up this book on a whim, it didn't look like the kind of book I normally would read, then I remembered "Don't judge a book by it's cover." :-) I read the first chapter and couldn't put it down. Engaging characters, good plot, and good use of History. The only bad thing I can say about this book is that it distracted me from concentraiting on my work. LOL!!WELL worth buying

Summary: Redundant
Review: I was excited to finally get around to Greeley's Nuala Anne McGrail Novels. After all, I'm Catholic and of Irish descent. At first, I was not disappointed. Irish Gold started out fine and I thought Greeley had a good handle on things Irish, the vernacular of Dublin, interesting characters, and a compelling historical story line. Having just finished Irish Lace (the 2nd of the series), I don't think I can continue hearing the same meager themes pressed over and over and over- and I suspect such is the extent of Fr. Greeley's repertoire. How many times does one need to read the words to "Molly Malone," after all? One particularly distasteful reoccurring theme is Greeley's preclusion to bash Republicans and champion thoroughly discredited liberal views at every opportunity. Maybe the world looked differently to the author when this book was published in 1994, but I'll wager Fr. Greeley sees the country in 2005 as having been taken over by "those evil Republicans." Well, I guess one cannot argue with success, but my opinion is that the success can be attributed to reader's low expectations rather than Greeley's writing acumen. I cannot recommend this series of novels.

Summary: Best read I've had in my short career as a reader
Review: I won't lie and say I'm a grand critic. I'm just a 17-year-old with a fascination for the Irish in general (actually a cute Irish boy in my grade). This book compelled me to think, something my school rarely does. Father Greeley made me want to know more and more, page after page. I got in trouble more than once for staying up past 3:30 am so I could read; and usually by the time I did fall asleep, my dreams were filled by my vivid imagination creating the characters.

Review: I've read Andrew Greeley for 35 years and I was as delighted once again. Much to my surprise, my eighteen-year-old boy was entranced by this tale of the Civil War and the involvement of beautiful young people. Greeley's background in sociology makes his characters and settings factual and logical interspersed with fantasy.

Review: Irish Gold is a great historical novel along with a great mystery novel. Greely does a great job at captivating the reader and making us feel close to the characters.

Summary: Astonishingly informative, entertaining, realistic
Review: It was my first contact with the author Father Andrew M. Greeley and that's the only reason I put a 9 and not a10. I was amazed by his vividness and skill the clarity and effectiveness of his prose. There are no romantic cliches here, only real emotions of everyday people. I will surely read more of your books Father Andrew M. Greeley. Being a Greek I can't say that I have so much knowledge of the Irish History. I am certainly intrigued to learn much more. This is the accomplishment of the author that I value most. His book being very much entertaining, it goes beyond entertainment. It gives information, it analyses a point of view, an aspect about what happened in a certain occasion that remains one of the mysteries of modern history. God Bless You Father and May Keep You Well.

Summary: A beautiful story, definitely worth reading.
Review: Once again, Andrew Greeley has given his readers a sample of his finest work. This story, peppered with perfectly magical imagery of the Irish countryside, succeeds in capturing the true romance of Irish history. Greeley succeeds magnificently in his attempt to link truth and fiction as he explores the mystery of the Michael Collins murder. Follow Dermot Michael in his quest for the truth about his grandparents, and be swept away by the two parallel love stories which will leave any reader wishing the book would never end. A truely magical tale, this book is a treasure for any reader who is a romantic at heart.

Summary: I didn't like it !!!
Review: Somehow I just didn't like "Irish Gold". It was a gift, and I can see why people like it, with all the great reviews, but I just didn't. Something with Greeley's writing style did not go well with me. It was an easy read--but all the history stuff confused me at times--so many people and events, it was like, are you in the past or present? I thought the plot & events were good, but I just really did not like this book. A lot of people might, though.
