Summary: A suspenseful read...
Review: that I enjoyed by Andrew Klavan, I first read "Don't Say a Word" in 1992. With the 2001 movie starring Michael Douglas (probably good in the role, although I don't equate him physically with Nathan Conrad), I decided to revisit the book I once enjoyed before I see the movie (probably on DVD when it comes out). I was not disappointed. Klavan writes a suspenseful tale, but also tells the story of a very old-fashioned modern day marriage between Conrad and his admirable wife Agatha, a romance that is disrupted when his young daughter is kidnapped.

Central to the suspense is the tie in to a new patient of Conrad's, Elizabeth Burrows. The mystery encompasses her relationship to the kidnappers, who are observing the Conrad's from the apartment across the way, while pretending they have hidden a camera and microphones in the Conrad apartment.

Klavan uses an interesting author's palette, telling the story by the use of various points of view for various chapters, weaving the story as viewed by Conrad, Agatha, Elizabeth, and the head of the kidnapping gang, a cruel man known as "Sport".

The book is hard to put down, because your expectation is not of a happy ending. Klavan focuses more on events and dialogue than he does on character motivation and development, which makes for a brisk, page-turner of a suspense novel.

Klavan is an interesting author, formerly a journalist, of many suspense novels, and this, one of his oldest, is also one of his best.

Enjoy!

Summary: Don't say a word
Review: There is double pleasure in reading a book then watching a well made movie. In most cases, movies are no match for the journey of a book. Reading a book, you are only limited by your immagination while a movie is a specific visual expereince.
In this case, the book was poorly and superficially plotted compared to the movie. This book is an abosolute boardom drawing shallow and superficial plot scenarios. The movie modified the shallow and superficiall book scenarios into intelligent, believable, and suspenseful scenes. Don't read the book, see the movie instead.

Summary: No title
Review: This book got my attention really good even though I was impatient on books where I always stop after ten or so pages.
One thing that caught my attention was that in many of these suspence-mystery novels, the 'bad guys,' in this case will be the kidnappers, is not obvious or even evident in the book. In this book the author shows and tells you who the kidnappers are, what they are trying to do and what they want. This technique of the author indeed makes the story exciting - You already know what the kidnappers next step is, now you wait to see how the 'kidnapped' react.

Summary: Addictive Reading - Can't Put It Down!
Review: This book is a true spine-tingling, nerve-jangling suspense feast for those who love the genre...Excellent characterization of even the most minor characters; dialogue is realistic, snappy, & moves the action along full-tilt! Can't understand why this title is out of print!?! (What amazes me is that I bought the hardcover book for only $2.99 at a Walgreen's drug store and, in no way, did I expect it to be such a winner! Would make an excellent film as well; the characters are so well-drawn and vivid that I could cast the movie in my imagination as I read along. I plan to read everything else that I can get my hands on by Andrew Klavan!

Summary: An Excellent Novel
Review: This book is almost perfect. The only problem i had with was it's use of vulgar language throughout the novel.
The novels suspense is amazing, it can keep you reading for hours on end. Klaven's descriptive, but not overly so, style is perfect for this novel.
Overall, I would give it five stars for it's excellent content, however, it is not for rally young people, or queezy.

Summary: Non-Stop intensity. Compelling from the first page
Review: This book is highly exciting from the very begining. I literally could not put it down. I can't believe this was not made into a movie. This would be as good as anything Hitchcock or Brian DePalma ever did. I highly recommend this book. It is a great story which is incredibly written. Andrew Klaven deserves much more attention that he is getting. Awesome.

Summary: THE CARACTORS JUST COME ALIVE, IT'S GREAT
Review: This book was recomended to me by my cousin, she let me borrow her copy, and this book was so good I had to share the expirence with all my friends, and didn't give the book back until 6 to 7 months later! It was so great the way the charactors shaped through the book and the way the tension mounted towards the end, you almost felt where each charator was coming from. This book painted brillient visual, you can picture what the people looked like. I.E. I thougt that Dr Conrad was like bruce willlis when he was trying to rescue his daugter from the vilians. Damn, this book is so good it's really hard to write down what I want to , but I know one thing, I definatly rcommended this book to just about anyone who enjoy's a fantastic thriller.

Summary: Terrible suspenseful
Review: This is one of the most original page-turners I've ever read. I'm not sure if I liked the characters or the plot, but the suspense is awesome. You can't stop reading this. Klavan is a real master of suspense. If you don't believe me read his 'True Crime'. It's even better.

Summary: Contrived and predictable.
Review: We are supposed to be kept interested wondering what the magical number is. I was not. The characters are un-believable and dislikable. The writing is dreadful and cliched. The climax has been repeated in a million movies. Did you believe it?
