Rating: Summary: On the Edge of Your Seat Thriller Review: I bought this book after seeing the movie. Of course, that can sometimes be a big mistake. However, knowing that the book is usually different from the movie, I kept an open mind as I began to read the prologue. After that, there was just no putting the book down. I couldn't wait to find out what happens next! Psychiatrist Nathan Conrad has a flourishing practice, a gorgeous wife, and a beautiful daughter. He considers himself a bit run-down, but is happy with his life. Until he meets Elizabeth Burrows and his happy life is turned upside down. Elizabeth is a patient placed in a city-run psychiatric hospital. She has committed a brutal murder and Nathan is called by a colleague who seeks to discover whether she is fit to stand trial for the crime. As Elizabeth begins to trust Dr. Conrad, someone else takes notice. A man called Sport has a large stake in the doctor-patient relationship. If Elizabeth trusts Dr. Conrad enough, she might tell him everything, including the number that can make Sport a very rich man. How will he ensure that this comes about? ... What follows is a fast-paced suspenseful journey to discover the number that Elizabeth has locked in her head. I really enjoyed reading this book, but gave it three stars because some of the graphic language in the novel turned me off a bit. If you are a fan of the movie, you may be a bit disappointed as the book goes on a completely different tangent. The premise is the same: psychiatric patient has a number that the bad guy needs, so he steals the psychiatrist's daughter to ensure his cooperation. However, the rest of the novel is almost completely different. No matter! The book is a great read! You won't be able to put it down!

Rating: Summary: Don't say a word Review: I can honestly say this is the most suspenceful novel i have ever read. The book is occasionaly boring, but hey, i guess that's all novels. The beginning i really didn't care for what was goin on, but after Conrad's daughter gets kidnapped the novel is awesome!! The author does a great job at describing the emotional torchure that Conrad and his wife are going through. The most interesting character by far was Elizabeth (i think that was her name, u know, they psycho girl), she was so messed up it was actually quite freeky reading the stuff she said and thought. A lota the suspence was kinda time suspence, such as conrad having to get to a certain place in time or his daughter dies. The novel was very intese all over, such as the daughter trying to escape. The novel has a very good plot and ends off well, with a great fight. I highly reccomend this novel for those suspence lovers, cuz it really is the best suspence novel i've ever read.
Rating: Summary: entertaining and surprising Review: I enjoyed this book because it was clever with good plot twists and pretty interesting characters, especially the character Elizabeth Burrows. I did think that they could have made it where you didn't know who the kidnappers were, but in a way you didn't, if you read the story and see what I mean. This book was better than most and worth reading.
Rating: Summary: One of the best novels I have ever read! Review: I have only 3 syllables in order to describe this book...sus-pense-ful! I felt like i was on a nonstop roller coaster from the very first page! I had a very hard time putting this book down in order to get anything else done, and while I was engrossed in some chapters, things simply did not get done. This was a first novel by Andrew Klavin that I have read and it was worth every minute. I would recommend this book highly to anyone who can't get enough of heartstopping terror!
Rating: Summary: BEST NOVEL EVER Review: I have read all of the classics. I have read some of the most famous and acclaimed books ever written. This is my favorite book. Thrilling from front to back cover, intelligently written, outstanding character development... It's a shame this book is out of print. Andrew Klavan has not received enough attention for this novel. Whoever finally decides to make a movie out of this will sweep the Academy Awards. I love this book.
Rating: Summary: Spread The Good Word About Dont Say A Word Review: I would like to start off by saying that this is a really great book. It's exciting throughout and the end has a nice unexpected twist. Andrew Klavan begins the book telling two stories. One about a man named Sport, the other about a man named Conrad Vernon. At first the stories don't seem to be connected at all, but the author begins to weave the two together. By mid book the plot is revealed and Sport has kidnapped Conrad's daughter. The rest of the book is a high excitement ride as Conrad attempts to meet Sport's demands, with hopes of getting his daughter back. I realize that's a rather vague summary, but i don't want to give away any part of the book. I gave this book 5 out of 5 stars because once you start it you'll have a really hard time putting it down again. It's really well written and not at all predictable, but it does have some material suitable more for older kids. Obviously elementary school kids aren't probably reading 310 page novels, but this is more of a high school age book. All in all I'm definitely recommending the book, and I'm very glad I chose to read it.
Rating: Summary: A quirky gripping story Review: Jessica the daughter of a psychiatrist, Dr Natan Conrad's, has been kidnapped creating a big disruption in his lifeIn order to grab the reader the author employs the first 100 pages to describe the main characters backgrounds and at the same time prepares the scene for what lies ahead, a multilayered mystery, the first layer is why Jessica has been kidnapped and the second more interesting layer comes through Elizabeth a psychotic delusional violent patient with a harrowing past who is confined to a mental institution and seems to know a "number". This number carries an extremely important meaning for the future of the kidnappers, in exchange for that number the kidnappers would free Jessica. That is Dr. Conrad mission, to question Elizabeth and get "that number"ยท if he wants to get his daughter back alive. As in his others novels Mr. Klavan exhibits again the same writing style, focusing on pure raw meat action intertwining mystery and suspense and playing with times, his strongest ability, but without unexpected twists or surprises, his weakest point, something he must correct to make his stories more appealing, in addition I did not like the fact that he puts numbers to the chapters implying what is going to come. On the other hand there are no dull pitfalls, he likes to create tension, make it grow and blow it up in the ending..
Rating: Summary: A suspenseful read... Review: that I enjoyed by Andrew Klavan, I first read "Don't Say a Word" in 1992. With the 2001 movie starring Michael Douglas (probably good in the role, although I don't equate him physically with Nathan Conrad), I decided to revisit the book I once enjoyed before I see the movie (probably on DVD when it comes out). I was not disappointed. Klavan writes a suspenseful tale, but also tells the story of a very old-fashioned modern day marriage between Conrad and his admirable wife Agatha, a romance that is disrupted when his young daughter is kidnapped. Central to the suspense is the tie in to a new patient of Conrad's, Elizabeth Burrows. The mystery encompasses her relationship to the kidnappers, who are observing the Conrad's from the apartment across the way, while pretending they have hidden a camera and microphones in the Conrad apartment. Klavan uses an interesting author's palette, telling the story by the use of various points of view for various chapters, weaving the story as viewed by Conrad, Agatha, Elizabeth, and the head of the kidnapping gang, a cruel man known as "Sport". The book is hard to put down, because your expectation is not of a happy ending. Klavan focuses more on events and dialogue than he does on character motivation and development, which makes for a brisk, page-turner of a suspense novel. Klavan is an interesting author, formerly a journalist, of many suspense novels, and this, one of his oldest, is also one of his best. Enjoy!
