Rating: Summary: History for non history buffs Review: Thank-you Mary Higgins Clark for another fine read. I am not a history buff but was mesmerized with the information you shared in this book. It was quite enjoyable!!! A great book for those who want to know a bit more about the daily lives of those who shaped our country...but do not want to get buried in geneologies and factual tidbits.
Rating: Summary: Mount Vernon Love Story Review: The Love of George and Martha Washington "He will make a fine president." Mary Higgins Clark in Mount Vernon Love Story expresses strong emotions and feelings that George and Martha Share during his presidency. The author's purpose of this novel is to demonstrate the historical background and culture of the eighteenth century. The majority of the story takes place in Philadelphia, but at other times it includes other settings such as Mount Vernon. The whole story is about George Washington's thoughts during this time. Throughout the whole book it talks about George Washington's life accomplishments. Mount Vernon Love Story takes us to two distinctive time periods. Each chapter alternates between two frames, one which is 1797, the last day of Washington's presidency. The other chapter starts from 1745, taking us back to his childhood on Ferry Farm until he made his first definitive step towards presidency. The story also focuses on many of the women who had an impact on his like such as his wife, Martha Washington. This book is the first book that Mary Higgins Clark has ever written. It shows clearly the language she uses. The style she uses is very plain and dull in Mount Vernon Love Story. The story does not have an easy flow to it. It's very difficult to follow and understand because it flashes back a numerous amount of times. It is not like any of Clarks other works. The characters in Mount Vernon Love Story are easy to understand. George Washington is a stiff and conservative man that all he wants is to accomplish his goal in life. He watches John Adams inauguration and he reflects on the events that led him to his becoming the first president. George Washington's mother Mary Bell Washington was a very strict, domineering and controlling woman. The setting in Mount Vernon Love Story is mainly in Philadelphia around 1779. The story had many flashbacks that refer to when he was a little boy. It talks about George Washington in 1745 when he first decided that one day he wanted to be president, and he took his first steps in becoming president. The plot of the story begins with a young boy who had decided that he wanted to be president one day. In the eighteenth century he finally achieved his goal in life. The book talks about his love for Martha Washington and her helping him achieve his goal he had always wanted to accomplish. The story is written in first person to show that the book is Washington's thoughts. It also includes second person to show the other persons perspective. In Mount Vernon Love Story, Mary Higgins Clarks writing is very inattentive to the reader. The book is very difficult to understand. It flashes back and forth between two different time periods imparticular. The story has on major action within it. This is not a book to recommend.

Rating: Summary: GEORGE WASHINGTON LIVES! Review: The only negative thing I have to say about this book is that it is too short. I wish it was triple its size......................This biography is written in the form of a novel showing us the personal life of George and Martha(Patsy) Washington rather than the military and political life of the first couple...........George's father died when George was young and his mother was rather controlling and had a sharp tongue. His mother's personality brought out anger in George and he escaped to his half brothers Mt. Vernon home..........When George was a teenager he had a crush on his best friend's wife, Sally Fairfield. Sally taught George how to dance and he was known as a very good dancer among his neighbors and friends........George met Martha when she was married with two children. When Martha became a widow, George fell in love with her and her son and daughter. They got married and he was a very good father to the children. He and Martha had no children of their own.......In our history books we do not learn of the great love Martha and George had for each other. Martha even followed to be with him a couple of months before a battle began in the spring time. In this book I encountered a living, breathing George Washington who had a great passion and devotion to country and family.
Rating: Summary: Just a nice story Review: This is the first book that I have ever read by Mary Higgins Clark. I found this book to be delightful, charming, and just a nice story. Very rarely do I finish a book (even one that I really like) and wish that it was longer, but that was exactly how I felt about this one. I would recommend it to anyone.

Rating: Summary: A nice read Review: This is the frist book written by Mary Higgins Clark. This book focuses on the love story of George and Martha Washington. The book takes palce in two timelines. It begins with President Washington preparing to leave public office and return to Mount Vernon with his wife Martha, who liked to be called Patsy. And quickly jumps back to periods of Geroge Washinton's youth. Trying to give us some insight on the man and his relation ship with Martha. A lot of research went into this book. And I learned a lot about one of the founding fathers of the USA. The book is a charming and quick read. You almost are left with the thought of yearning for a few more chapters. It made me want to look further into George Washington's life and career.
Rating: Summary: Charming but not much substance Review: This novel's subtitle describes one part of the story, the title another. From the introduction, this is Mary Higgins Clark's first published novel, originally titled "Aspire to the Heavens." It tells the story of the love she feels she discovered between George and Martha Washington. However, his love for Mount Vernon was just as powerful, and very real. Told in small chapters that run from the end of his presidency to the past when he first met Martha, the story skips many of the important events in Washington's career. It does tell of some of the things we do know about his relationship with Martha. He worried about her spoiling her children. He loved Jacky and Patsy very much, and the latter did die in his arms. And he and Martha (also called Patsy) raised Jacky's youngest two children as their own. Since Martha burned all but a very few examples of their correspondence, not much else can be known for certain of their feelings for one another. The lack of substance makes this small book unsatisfying, although it's a pleasant read. In places it evokes the times and how people lived. For a more in-depth fictional story of the lives of these two, readers may want to try "Washington's Lady" by Elswyth Thane. It can be difficult to find, but is worth the effort. She too depicts their relationship based on love and respect, but in much greater depth.
Rating: Summary: Another View of George Washington... Review: This was a very interesting book. It took me a long while to get into the story, but it was a very worthwhile read. I liked how the chapters were cut so short. This book follows George's love life. Although he didn't marry the woman he truly loved, he was very satisfied with his wife Patsy,AKA Martha. They had no children of their own, but George was loved and respected by Patsy's two children, Jacky and little Patsy. Mount Vernon Love Story had a few flaws. As mentioned before, it took me a while to get used to the writing style, and I got confused between the different time periods. But after all is said and done, I'd give this book no less than 4 stars:)
