Rating: Summary: Page Turner Review: I just needed to give this book the 4 **** it's deserves. It was a complete page turner, I love how Sidney writes, he keeps the story moving along and the ending wowed me. So what if both characters were ruthless, it still was an amazing read.
Rating: Summary: Loved IT! Review: "The Sky is Falling" is a real page turner. I was so intrigued, I stayed home all day to complete it. As in true Sidney Sheldon style the ending is a true surprise.
Rating: Summary: One DUHHH after another! Review: Right from the beginning of listening to this audio book, I was astounded by how ridiculous the writing was. ("A woman in her FIFTIES with PREMATURELY grey hair". HUH???) Then I got into the plot. Geez, an entire family of wealthy, philanthropic, high-profile, Kennedy-types is wiped out by "accident" within ONE YEAR, and not only is no one suspicious, but when the heroine dares to question it, is met with skepticism and called a "chicken little". And by experienced journalists yet. One would have thought that a full-fledged government investigation would have been launched after the second "accident". The protagonist, Dana, follows the story all over the United States, Europe and Russia, with not a single objection from her bosses. Are absences and budgets never a consideration? As she travels world-wide, her interviews consist of two or three obvious questions, amateurishly phrased and never followed up. Onward to the next country, where this is repeated. This is supposed to be an experienced journalist? I cringed in frustration. From one plot-hole to another, with one dimensional characters, unbelievable dialogue and a ridiculous, unsatisfying ending, Sheldon once again proves that he is the most over-hyped hack in the English language. Aimed at North America's typical low-brow audience, this book will not disappoint the average reader, who will likely follow it up with one of Danielle Steel's latest literary disasters. ...
Rating: Summary: Predictable Review: Dana Evans is a television anchorwoman who is investigating the killing of Gary Winthrop, the last surviving member of the Winthrop clan. This family was considered America's royal family. Unfortunately, all five members died in tragic accidents within the last year. Dana thinks that all of this is too coincidental and she uses her resources to learn the truth. Mr. Sheldon does a good job creating several character dynamics with Dana by including Kemal. Kemal is an eleven-year-old she rescued from Sarajevo who lost his arm during the war. Kemal is afraid that Dana is going to reject him and send him back; Dana is afraid that she is doing a bad job as a mother to Kemal and is afraid that Children Services is going to whisk him away. This is the only good subplot in the novel; everything else in the story was superfluous. Nobody is willing to talk bad about the Winthrops and those who do wind up dead... The motives came out of left field making something complicated out of something simple. It made me feel that the more complicated the story line, the more plausible it can be. This book is a quick read. I have read two other novels by this author and none of them have really satisfied me. The book is only good if you need time to kill.
Rating: Summary: Fast & Flashy Review: A friend of mine told me to read it. I did, only took five days to finish it. One of the best mind spinning suspense I've read in a long time. The ending leaves you smiling. I would recommend this to anyone who likes a fast book.
Rating: Summary: Too Predictable Review: Sidney Sheldon used to write good books. This one was too predictable and the smart TV newslady was in fact not. And I agree with one of the other reveiwers, people do not call everyone darling! If you want to read it, borrow it from a friend or the library.
Rating: Summary: A guilty pleasure Review: The world's dimmest newswoman sets out to prove that the deaths of a prominent political family are the result of conspiracy. With typical restraint the rest of the media, not to mention law enforcement, have chosen to ignore the red flags waving all over this potential scoop, so she's pretty much on her own. Along the way she meets several highly suspicious people in whom she instantly places all her considerable trust. (It's hard to imagine this innocent navigating the local mall, much less a war zone in Sarajevo.) In her favor she has really nice bosses at the network who don't mind if she blows off her duties as a news anchor to stumble around the world interviewing highly placed officials, all of whom seem eager to answer her naïve queries. (The exotic locales are established by a few lines of travel-guide dialogue in genuine foreign languages.) Her boyfriend (we know they're in love cause they call each other "darling") is supposed to be covering sports on the same TV show, but he's too busy helping his Supermodel ex-wife race through history's fastest cancer treatment. There must be a lot of dead air on that newscast. Our heroine has also "rescued" a one-armed war orphan upon whom she bestows much benign neglect. (Can't help thinking this kid would have been better off on his own. And has anybody asked where he was the night the fugitive's wife got killed?) Anyhow, it turns out intelligent people worldwide have all been fooled into thinking that the personification of Satan was a saint, and it's up to our heroine to set them straight and save the world. Sheldon keeps the plot twists coming and the pages turning into a compulsive one-night read, even if I was giggling all the way.
Rating: Summary: Another excellent read from Sheldon! Review: I have read all of Sidney Sheldon's books, and this was by far worth the wait. I was out of books to read and this came along just in time. It's action-packed and suspenseful, very Sheldon-esque, and it took me on a trip around the world. Very, very, good book!
Rating: Summary: Who really wrote this book?? Review: Sidney Sheldon needs to be told that someone else is using his name to write and publish garbage. For years Sheldon was one of my all time favorite writers. I have always considered Master of the Game one of the best books I have ever read. Likewise, The Other Side of Midnight, Bloodline, Rage of Angels and If Tmorrow Comes were excellent books. However in recent years his writting has really fallen off. But,The Sky is Falling is by far his worst effort yet. It is worthless. I have never read a more predictable book in my life. Surprise ending? What surprise ending? I couldn't agree more with the other reviewer that said, had this been a first novel it never would have been published. SKIP THIS BOOK! If you want to read Sheldon go back and read the ones he wrote in the 70's and 80's-even if you've read those same books before-I promise you they will have more surprises then this one! If this is the best he can do now he needs to quit writing, before a new generation of readers judge him on these books and not on what a lot of us know he is, or was, capable of.
Rating: Summary: stupid mistakes Review: In standard form, the Police Chief (Wash, DC) is being pressured by politicians for action on a celebrity murder. His secretary tells him the Mayor is calling but he says he can't take the call because he is on the phone with the GOVERNOR. Of DC? Right! This is on page 46 and long before that the reader has discovered that logic and realistic basic information have NO place in this book. I read another 20 pages before tossing this one. A real dud.
