Rating: Summary: Couldn't put it down! Review: A friend of mine gave me this book as a recommended reading. I'm not usually a crime book reader, but I really liked this book. About 2/3rds of the way through, I still wasn't sure how it would end and stayed up until midnight to find out. I really hate to talk about the plot, but I liked how one person couldn't live with himself if he didn't at least try to help another person. That's it in a nutshell, a feel-good page turner. The only crime books I read are classic British ones or Joseph Wambaugh. True Crime was the very least a thrill. You could easily read this book in a day.
Rating: Summary: Fun read, page turning excitement Review: A perfect book for that long plane ride. Very pithy writing and can't-wait-to-see-what- happens story line. Lots of fun.
Rating: Summary: An emotional and thought provoking thriller. Review: Andrew Klavan has succeeded in writing a book that is not only a can't-put-it-down, white knuckle, page turning thriller but also one that makes us examine the bigger universal issues of crime and punishment, love and marriage, the hereafter, race relations, even the importance of a well tuned set of spark plugs. Klavan's characters are well defined and very real. For me, the only disappointing part of the book was the epilogue, and I wonder if that isn't simply because I didn't want the book to end.
Rating: Summary: A breath of fresh air Review: Any avid reader knows that every so often a novel comes along that feels like a cool breeze on a hot and stale summer day. True Crime from Andrew Klavan is such a novel. It's a wonderful feeling to know that it's still possible to inject freshness into the well worn crime/thriller/mystery genre. Not only is this novel a great and believeable story, the author's prose and word-play seem so fresh and welcoming. An intelligent author indeed, whom knows how to stir your every emotion without relying on tired and manipulative tactics. I thoroughly enjoyed this book from beginning to end and am happy to say that the author did not miss a single beat. My friends, this is an intense, moving and very rewarding novel that I would highly recommend to all crime/thriller fans, or anyone who is a fan of a well written story from an author who is in complete control of his craft. Simply, a stunning work.
Rating: Summary: Excellent beat-the-clock thriller Review: As a person who reads a lot of thrillers, I must say that True Crime is the best one I've come across in a long time. The plot is perfectly constructed and extremely suspenseful. You literally hear a clock ticking in the background as the tension increases. The characters too are well developed and very interesting to follow. Steve Everett, the protagonist, is an especially likable dislikable person with a great sense of humor. In short, this is one great read. Buy it today!
Rating: Summary: Very sharp, very unnerving, very good Review: Books of this style come thick and fast - the fact that it is identifiable in the midst of a plethora of quick paperbacks means that for once the marketing gurus have promoted a book that is justifiable well written. Not many books force me past the hour of midnight because they are so gripping - this one did. I also think Hamlet is intense and gripping, but Klavan has made every page so raw that one's fingers are ultimately attracted to going "that one more page" instead of turning in for the night. What can we say of this book in one quick summary? The latter third of the book is so beautifully crafted it has suspense that leads into the last three pages. When people yawn about formula-writing, Klavan takes the formula and tortures it to provide a white, crackling and stark message, and a muscle-flexing ending. Don't hesitate on this baby, it's got what it takes for the casual reader.
Rating: Summary: I WAS ON THE EDGE OF MY SEAT! Review: I absolutely could not put this book down. Sounds trite, but it is true. I love the way this guy wrote - lots of dry humor where it was appropriate but you also felt the pain of the man in jail, as well as his wife. I have read other "death row" accounts, but none that drew me in quite like this did (Dead Man Walking was another good one). It built tension all the way through and you just kept hoping...I have ordered this book for friends, mostly because I refuse to loan out my copy for fear it will get lost. After I finished it, I read it aloud to my husband (one of those "bonding" things we do) and he loved it, too.
Rating: Summary: It is so well written, you feel as if you are there. Review: I am in law enforcement myself in real life, so when my boyfriend saw this book he bought it for me. I am not a person who likes to read a book in a couple of days, it takes me weeks and then I lose interest however not with this book. My instructor's at the college wish I would read my class books as fast, as I am reading this book. I can see every color and all the action that is being written about.I spend all my free time at work during breaks & lunch reading this book. I can not wait to see the movie, they already have bill boards up in Los Angeles near my office. I have recommended this book to a few people who can not wait to get it. I like it so much I might read it twice, that would be a first!
Rating: Summary: Exceptional!!! Review: I completed this book in two days and it is one of the most thrilling books I have read. It is highly recommended and definitely a page-turner. The characters and emotions emanated are so very real. Only downside was Everett. I guess you'd have to read the book to find out why.
Rating: Summary: fast paced and engrossing. Review: I dont know about over hyped I picked it up about three years ago in a bargain store and could not believe my good fortune. I loved the language and the fact that here was a real anti-hero that you could not help but like. I was amazed at the pace of the novel and sat with it at work, having a sneaky read every so often. I have not been able to access some of his other work and really think that this could not be matched. I also cannot believe that it has taken so long for someone to bring it to film, however will not go to the cinema to see it, as I know that it will not match the text!
