Summary: Arson in Llanfair
Review: A serial arsonist is loose in the Welsh mountains. He seems to be targeting properties owned by foreigners. Is there a connection to some of the nationalist groups? Village constable Evan Evans thinks so. Meanwhile, the owner of the new French restaurant just down the mountain is receiving threatening notes. But when her place goes up in flame, a body is found in the rubble. Who is it? And who is setting the fires? Meanwhile, Evan is thinking about applying for a promotion that would take him out of Llanfair.

Rhys Bowen offers yet another charming tale of life in a small Welsh village. Llanfair grows more familiar and fun with every visit. This is probably the best plot to date. While I suspected the direction this book was going, it took several twists along the way to the satisfying conclusion.

With this, the fourth book in the series, these people have become friends. I'm already looking forward to my next visit.

Summary: A quaint cozy
Review: Although Constable Evan Evans years to be a detective on an official murder investigation, overall he is content with being assigned to the small village of Llanfair. The townsfolk are proud of their heritage and resent any foreign intrusion including the new French restaurant owned and operated by Madame Yvette Bouchard. Adding to the locals' disfavor of her establishment dubbed the "den of iniquity" by the local clergy is that Yvette is open for business on the Sabbath.

The xenophobia turns ugly when someone torches the cottage of an English couple followed by the arson destruction of a foreign-owned inn. The authorities believe an extremist group is behind the attacks. When Yvette's restaurant is burned down next, it appears to be the same organization behind the first two fires. However, this time, a murdered body is found amidst the ruins. Evan joins the inquiries that lead him and others to England and France in a quest to uncover a clever killer.

The fourth installment of the Constable Evans mysteries is as good as the previous three novels. EVAN AND ELLE showcases the beauty, culture, and politics of a small Welsh village. The numerous subplots merge into the main story line in an expeditious way that demonstrates the abilities of Rhys Bowen to take his audience on several sidebars that add depth to the tale. Fans of police procedurals in exotic locales will enjoy this charming novel and the other colorful books in this warm series.

Summary: Fourth Constable Evans mystery features real life headlines
Review: Evan and Elle is the fourth book in my Constable Evans series. They are all set in Snowdonia, Wales, where I spent childhood summers visiting my mother's family. In my childhood going to chapel on Sunday was obligatory. Now religion is on the wane and chapels are falling into disuse all over Wales. This fact and reading about Nationalist extremists burning down holiday cottages prompted me to write this story. In my story, a disused chapel has been turned into a French restaurant. The locals are scandalized--not only is it open on Sundays but it's run by a glamorous Frenchwoman. What next? Summary: gentle mystery
Review: I have to confess that I enjoy reading Ms. Bowen Welsh mysteries. Getting that out of the way, I find them to be a very pleasent diversion, but not much more. Her plots tend to become a blur a day or two after I finish a book. And this one is no exception. Its very charming and cute and unimportant. Even so you will have a very good time reading it.

Summary: Evan Evans gets better and better
Review: I just read this last night, and I must say that I enjoyed it in the extreme. Evan really had his hands full here. Once more there was a "fo- reigner" woman who is trying to make a play for our hero, much to the disapproval of Evan's "main ladies":Bronwen&Betsy. I think this was Ms.Bowen's best yet.

Summary: EVAN & ELLE--------A HIT!!!!!
Review: I really liked Evan & Elle. I have read all four books and enjoyed them all. Evan Evans is in his usual mode. A policeman that is concerned about the people around him. He does not use bad language nor is he trying to kill someone. In this book Evan has really two mysteries going at the same time. Who is setting the fires and who killed the man found dead after one of the buildings burn? How is the newcomer, Madame Yvette involved and is she Madame Yvette????? I like the barmaid Betsy and her play for Evan. Bronwen is his girl though, they make a good couple. I fear if they ever married it would not be good for the series. I can see the town of Llanfair and the surrounding countryside in my mind as I read, also the characters involved. Bowen does an excellent job of writing. Make me wish that is where I lived. I would suggest reading the books in order but I feel most will like Evan Evans and the people of Llanfair.

Summary: Evan Evans gets better and better
Review: Latest in series of Police Constable Evan Evans who is the sole law enforcement officer in a rural Welsh village. Part of the fun is reading about series recurring characters and their evolution. At long last, it appears Evans-the-Police is ready to start thinking about committing to Bronwen Price, school teacher. More happens in this book about their relationship than has happened in all the previous books togeher! All in all, a good read, especially if you've read the earlier ones in the series.
