Rating: Summary: Blood, Deciet, and Conviction. Review: THIS BOOK FOR THE MOST PART WAS ENJOYABLE BUT A BIT CONFUSING. POLITICS, POLITICS, POLITICS. THAT WAS THE MAIN FOUCUS OF THIS BOOK. THE STORY OF THE BOOK IS OUTSTANDING BUT IT WAS HARD TO FOLLOW AT TIMES. WITH SOME MANY CHARACTERS INTRODUCED AND FORGOT ABOUT AND THEN APPEARIN AGAIN, IT MAKES IT A CHALLENGE TO BE THOUROUGH WITH THE READING. THAT WAS JUST MY OPINION I KNOW MANY OTHERS FOUND IT TO BE EASY TO FOLLOW. I PERSONALLY LIKE THE IDEA OF FINDING THE TRUTH IN ALL THE CHAOS AND CONFUSION OF THE MURDER ON THE APPIAN WAY. I ENJOYED THE BOOK BUT I WOULD LIKE IT BETTER IF SOME OF THE POLITICAL IDEAS WERE LEFT OUT IT. I RECOMMEND IT FOR PEOPLE WHO LOVE A HISTORICAL BOOK ANDS WHO LOVE A GOOD MYSTERY. IT DEALS WITH ROMAN CULTURE AND POLITICS.
Rating: Summary: Suspense and adventure encompasses the flamboyant plot. Review: I really enjoyed this book. The book began in immediate suspense and caught my attention from the start. The book kept my attention with the murder and mystery of discovering who really killed Clodius. I was forced to read this book for my Latin III class but actually enjoyed this book. With the class we discussed this book and found it's deaper meanings. Instead of simpley taking quizes and tests about the small facts of the book we enjoyed the book through discussion and group projects. We are currently doing a project in which we have to take 10 pictures of things that remind us of certain seens in the book and present them to our class in a unique way. This has helped the class enjoy this book. While reading this book I was always unsure of what would happen next. We discussed what we thought would happen next and ended up discovering that something completely different would ocur. This book was quite suspenseful and i sugest that all should read this book. I recomend this book to all that enjoy suspense and are looking for a book that begins with immediate action. Most books have a long boring intro before the action begins but this book begins in the heart of the action. This is a well writen display of the life in ancient Rome. Our Latin class now sees Ropme in a more vivid and unique sight.
Rating: Summary: Murder and intrigue will keep you reading Review: This book was a book that once i started reading it i could not put it down till i was done. It is full of mystery and suspense and it will keep you hooked until you finish the last page and then you will want more. Steven Saylor is a great writer and people will not be disappointed with this book. This book is a continuation of the Roman citizen Gordianus who is a finder or what is modernly known as a detective. He is draw into the mysteries and intrigue of Roman politics and a rivalry between two men of Roman. When one is found dead both sides hire Gordianus to find out the truth of this incident. He is then drawn in deeper than any of his previous jobs. I liked this book because it has both a historical and fictional aspect to it. This book is a great book and you will want to read more about Gordianus after you finish this book. This book shows you some of the aspects of roman justice and just how different it is from today's justice system. This book also gives you information on what Rome was like. I would recommend this book to anyone who likes a book full of mystery and action. I enjoyed this book because i think that i have learned more about Rome from this book in a fun way than i would have in a class room. If anyone enjoys a good mystery book then you will enjoy this book.
Rating: Summary: RIOT, MURDER, DECEPTION, AND THE TRUTH! Review: I ENJOYED THIS BOOK VERY MUCH- THE ELEMENT OF SUSPENSE KEPT ME READING INTENTLY THE ENTIRE BOOK. I ALSO LIKE HOW SAYLOR INCLUDED ASPECTS OF ROMAN HISTORY WHICH LET THE READER UNDERSTAND ANCIENT ROMAN HISTORY AND THE WAY OF LIFE MUCH BETTER. THE DESCRIPTIONS AND IMAGES IN THE BOOK WERE GOOD AND HELPED ME TO PICTURE THE CHARACTERS AND THE SCENES VERY CLEARLY. EVEN THOUGH I GAVE THIS BOOK THREE STARS, I STILL ENJOYED CATALINA'S RIDDLE(5 STARS!) BETTER. I FOUND THAT CATALINA'S RIDDLE HAD A BETTER ELEMENT OF SUSPENSE AND SURPRISE. I ALSO ENJOYED THE CHARACTERS OF CATALINA'S RIDDLE BETTER THAN THE CHARACTERS OF MURDER ON THE APPIAN WAY. I FELT THAT MURDER ON THE APPIAN WAY WAS MORE OF A BOOK THAT DEALT WITH ROMAN POLITICS AND HISTORY RATHER THAN THE STORY OF GORDIANUS AND HIS FAMILY.(I LOVE THE CHARACTER OF GORDIANUS AS WELL AS ALL HIS FAMILY MEMBERS.)OVERALL I ENJOYED BOTH BOOKS VERY MUCH BECAUSE IT HELPED ME TO LEARN MORE ABOUT ROMAN HISTORY, AND IT WAS WRITTEN IN A MURDER MYSTERY TONE WHICH APPEALS ME.
Rating: Summary: Thrilling Review: This book seems to keep you on the edge of your seat and you always want to find out what is going to happen next. I wish that I had read this book sooner than I did.
Rating: Summary: Saylor Saves Student's Lives! Review: This book added lots of flavor to the entire term Classical Civilization. Saylor is a wonderful author who writes in a descriptive and analyzing way which kept me interested at all times. This is the way in which all college assigned books should be written!!!
Rating: Summary: A Story that bounces along just like the Appian Way Review: As a student with a particular interest in Roman history, I was interested in reading this book. I was not dissapointed. The well defined characters advance the plot with ease while Saylor uses knowledge of ancient cultures to bring Rome to life. You really feel like you are there when the riots break out, or Gordianus and Eco visit Cicero and Caesar. Even though this is a fictional account, the portrayal of actual people brings them to life in a most pleasing way. A great book for any fan of mysteries who loves the unlikely ending.
Rating: Summary: This book was an excellent book that just caught my eye. Review: Steven Saylor writes the book in such a way to make you understand what is going on. The book never got boring like some books do. He made you feel for the characters and their lives. It's an awsome book if you like to take a step into the past and see their culture.
Rating: Summary: very exciting and educational Review: Before reading Saylor I always wondered how Caesar et al. pulled it off and pulled down the Republic. Reading his exciting books, I am getting a feeling for the mess things were in 2,000 years ago! As soon as I read this one, I immediately bought all the other books in the series and they're all fascinating.
Rating: Summary: Disappointing Review: I was a big fan of Steven Saylor's Roman mysteries, so I eagerly anticipated reading his latest installment, "A Murder on the Appian Way." Unfortunately, the book was excruciatingly dull and I kept waiting for the story to unfold. Saylor goes into great detail to explain Roman government, which may be interesting, but only if there is a plot in which to place it. Nothing at all happened in the first third of the book, and I realized I was forcing myself to keep reading. Then I put the book aside. I may try again later. But now I can only ask Steven Saylor: What happened
