Summary: Damn Good
Review: The was exaclty the book I have been waiting for. One of the best things about books is that reality can be shoved aside even if only for a short while. That is exactly what this book does you get into and you can't stop. It's like heroine the more you get the more you need. Well, the more I read the more I was interested. Of cours I had my favorite parts but in the big picture this book was the best book I have ever read. There is just something about page turning books like this one that making read worth the time. Kindof like finding a treasure in an old thrift store; it took you forever to find it, and now that you haven't you are just ecstatic. I simply can't sum up in a 1,000 words alone how much I loved this book. Maybe what made it so good was that it was written as a collaboration (Nicci Gerrard and Sean French) so it became easier to write for a man and a woman without having to guess what the oppposite sex might do. It also shows you how much someone can be obsessed and love someone so much that even after one hurts the other during sex (different folks, different stokes) they wouldn't just leave. They stick around and I am so glad that this Alice did because it made this book my favorite of all time! (so far)

Summary: Spellbinding!
Review: This was the first book I have read by Nicci French and I couldn't put it down! From the 2nd chapter, I was hooked - I read it in 2 days! The characters and storyline held my attention the ENTIRE book and I am recommending it to anyone & everyone I can.

Summary: Exciting Thriller
Review: This is a great book, one that is hard to put down once you get started. I stayed up all night reading it, and finished it feeling both reluctant that it was over and thoroughly satisfied. Nicci French blends erotic obsession with an exciting murder mystery to create a fascinating, complex story. I look forward to reading other books by this author.

Summary: Oh So Sad
Review: Everyone dreams of a love that would sweep them off their feet and although it sounded all too incredulous for the story, that's how it all began for Alice.

Discarding her comfortable and predictable life, Alice falls in love and lust with Adam Tallis, a climber of mountains. Her happiness is tainted when her own curiosity of her husband's past gives way to gory events that she never expected.

I felt greatly grieved at how the story went. A believer in love myself, I felt happy for Alice to have found such a man who would love her and take care of her forever. I couldn't help shedding a couple of tears at how their love had to end.

This tale is intricately weaved and you would find it hard to put down this book. Every character is an important clue to the mystery which you think is really not much of a mystery, at first.

There are things in the story which reminded me of a "real" life - friends to fall back on, moving ourselves out of the comfort zone in pursuit of what we want, loving and being loved.

It all just seems almost real to me, the anxiety, the tension, the fear. I feel so moved by it all that I wish it would have gone better for Alice and Adam.

There is just so much to tug at your heartstrings that I can only say, READ THIS BOOK.

Great one, Nicci.

Summary: Good, but definitely not great...
Review: The "Nicci French" duo seem to have a theme going; a woman, finds herself in a situation where a crime has left her feeling doubt and confusion, then eventually, after finding her way through the fog of her own insecurities, comes out having solved the crime. Or something like that. It seems, however, that in this instance, instead of a woman finding herself in a situation where a crime has been committed, we are introduced to a woman who finds herself in a bizarre relationship, then discovers that there might have been a crime...and indeed the story suffered for it.

The main criticism I have, is that the attraction between the Alice and her lover is never really explained. Or rather, seeing someone on the street and deciding they are the one, seems more suited for a story of fantasy than one of reality. And so, because of that, there is something very fantastic about this story, a sense of displacement.

Indeed, this ability of "Nicci French" to lead the reader off on tangents with the protagonist is one of their strengths, and was suited entirely to 'The Memory Game', where the protagonist was sure there was something amiss with her best friend's death, but was continually waylaid by her friends and family. Her "tangents" were her doubts, her insecurities, and a feeling of being lost, which was explained perfectly by her realisation that the passage of time had changed everything for her, but nothing for her best friend.

In 'Killing Me Softly', it annoyed more than intrigued.

I do believe that this novel would have been more effective as a story about a woman who finds herself in an abusive relationship but does not seem to realise it (which is what it starts out as). And that an event or a friend helps her to overcome the veil through which she views her relationship, and finally comes out stronger. Or perhaps something less predictable.

Alice slowly deteriorates as the story unfolds, both physically and mentally, and this, I believe, is the most intriguing aspect of the novel. Not so much the deaths, but rather the development of the main character. The "Nicci French" duo come second to none when developing a protagonist. Perhaps it is the sense of a "stream of consciousness" that does it so perfectly. They produce very real characters, with valid worries and reasonable doubts.

I do believe that "Nicci French" needed to have written this novel without a crime in mind. It seemed tacked on, and more unbelievable than Alice's impulsive decision to throw away all for Adam. In 'The Memory Game', from the onset, we were lead to believe that there was a crime, hence the discovery of a criminal made sense within the context of the story. In 'Killing Me Softly', the crime comes second to the relationship between Alice and Adam, but ends up taking precedence! And because of that, it didn't seem to fit in with the storyline.

I do believe this duo's forte is in the area of character development - and perhaps they should've taken a little longer to ponder over the crime aspect.

Summary: Good not great
Review: This is a good book to read. Personally, if you are looking for the suspenseful, victim runs for life type of ending, it's not there. The ending to me was a huge letdown. Other than that the book was pretty good.

Summary: ROLLER COASTER RIDE
Review: I loved this book! I couldn't put it down. It usually takes me a long time to read a book. Not this one! I felt like I was on a roller coaster ride. It never got boring. I really liked the main character, Alice. What can I say but WOW! A great book all around.

Summary: Good book....certainly not 5 stars...
Review: Well, this was pretty good, if you need something to read quickly. I did read it in a weekend, and it kept my interest. But not great by any means. There was no mystery (perhaps there wasn't intended to be), and the one-sided, controlling relationship was weird. Yes, some relationships are abusive, but wouldn't it take Alice some time before she realized that she shouldn't ask her husband things? She's a strong businesswoman, but yet right from the beginning doesn't even try to ask him normal questions?

Also, I kept waiting for her profession, and the company she worked for, to have some bearing on the story. Never happened. That's fine, but the author(s) went into more detail and dialogue about the company than was necessary if they weren't going to bring it into the story.

What we had here was clear after the first few chapters: An otherwise well-adjusted woman who falls in "lust" and marries based on nothing, and quickly learns that her husband is trouble, but stays with him. At the end, all we have is a "glad to be alive" woman, who was terrorized by that husband. We knew all along that she wouldn't die....it was written in the first person. Duh.

Hmmmmm....I guess I just prefer books with twists and mystery.

Summary: Read it in one day!
Review: I sat down at noon on Memorial Day and finished the book at 9 p.m. that night! The review describing it as Damage meets Into Thin Air was right on the money. Having read, and enjoyed, both of those books, I expected to find this one interesting. But it really captured me and I couldn't put it down. While Adam would not be someone who I would be attracted to, I think that many women are attracted to the 'bad boys' rather than the safe, loving men out there. I think the reason Alice stayed with Adam was she desperately needed Adam's total obsession with her, even though it scared her at times. I would highly recommend this book.
