Rating: Summary: I couldn't figure out if this woman was daft or brilliant... Review: If I were see a perfectly chiselled male eerily standing and staring at me from the same position on a London street, chances are, believe it or not, I would run like hell in the opposite direction. However, the steep, rounded edges of this novel authored by Nicci French suprisingly kept me curiously captivated. Even the notion that this woman would give up all life and personal possession was beyond me but tantalising through sheer disbelief. Perhaps the most sharpest aspects came from the mountain scene and flashbacks of the grim cliff-face. Right down to the syringe filled with Dexamethasone (experienced climbers will have to fill a blank for me as to what that is used, or not used, for) made the novel and created more nailbiting than its 'Rosemary's Baby'-type climax. Interesting, seemingly unimportant detail and desolate dialogue - much like the life Alice Loudon becomes - make this novel worthy of frequent page turning.
Rating: Summary: Unplug the phone - you can't put this one down!! Review: I read Nicci French's taut thriller in six hours. It is not often I find a novel to be 'unputdownable', but this one truly is. French writes with great skill, making your heart race, making you say "why did you DO that" out loud! and making you empathize with what, in many people's minds would be seen as a foolish and dangerous situation that the heroine, Alice Loudon gets herself involved in.Why would she leave a happy and comportable relationship for a stranger? Albeit a handsome and enigmatic one? It is to French's credit, that we understand Aice's motives and desire - her writing and characterization are wholly believable; her prose is spare and sharp - French's breakneck pace in storytelling mirrors that of Alice's headlong descent into desire and obsession. If you enjoy an exciting, page-turning, no-nonsense thriller that makes a somewhat unbelievable scenario totally convincing, then this one is for you - highly recommended. I look forward to Ms. French's next work.
Rating: Summary: Sure to grab you by the throat Review: Thrillers are not my normal read, but I'd heard intriguing things about the husband-and-wife team that writes as "Nicci French" and I had a longish flight to catch, etc etc. Glad I took the plunge. Middle class, 30-ish, bright and pretty, Alice locks eyes with a devilishly handsome stranger on a wintry London street and within a few pages has abandoned her safe existence in the grip of a sexual obsession. Doesn't hurt that he's a legitimate mountaineering hero, or that his bedroom technique takes her to places where she's never been. We see the pitfalls long before Alice seems able to, but the story still comes at us dense with dread. This is not so much a horror-thriller, as a story of adult life - complete with Nick Hornby-like musings on the contradictions of modern love - that spirals down into a fairly credible darkness. Think of it as "Bridget Jones' Dairy of Death." I still have a question about the climbing rope, but what the hell... This book had me reaching for it in the spare moments when the lights were red. And you don't get THAT everyday!
Rating: Summary: Too Good To Be True Review: Is the one person that is so perfect for you really too good to be true? That is thy question and Killing Me Softly has the answer. Thi book by Nicci French is an outstanding novel of love, mystery, and murder. Alice Loudon had it all: a faithful boyfriend, a magnificent group of friends, and a fantastic carreer as a scientist. However, Alice was given a chance of a lifetime. She was given the chance to be with her ideal better half. Her soul mate. She must choose between her life as it is, or take a chance living a life with someone else, whom she thinks will give her a better life. It was Adam Tallis' entrancing gaze that lured Alice into his cave of mystifying love. It was Adam's passion for love that enticed Alice into his arms. His incredibly beautiful intense blue eyes would only be a masquerade of somthing ominous. The charaster faces difficult choices and must rely on what her heart tells her rather than what her conscience is saying. Her decision carried with it heavy consequences. This narrative is written so cunningly that the ending turns out to be more astonishin and flabbergasting than any other ending I've ever read. Any woman who had dreamt of that one perfect guy will adore this book. Such dreams are put into words that elucidate exactly what it would be like. Because such experiences are sporadic, readers will be rapt to this beautifully written novel.
Rating: Summary: Nothing but garbage Review: It is a bit disconcerting to pick up a book noted as a featured alternate of the Literary Guild, Doubleday Book Club, and the Mystery Guild that is worthless. Read this if you enjoy a book about a man who physically abuses women - spends 95% of his time in the sack, 5% being mysterious.. This book is a genuine bummer. The authors main forte' seems to be four letter words as well. This isn't literature, it is junk and should be an embarrassment to the author and the publisher. It saves me time though. I won't waste another moment on any book from Ms.French.
Rating: Summary: Love Story Turned Thriller Review: I had already been impressed with one of Nicci French's earlier books, "The Memory Game", and had high hopes for this one. It was even better than I could possibly have imagined. "Killing Me Softly" starts out as a beautiful love story. Alice meets Adam and both are attracted to each other on first sight. That one moment is going to change Alice' life. She leaves her boyfriend, her home and her friends to get married to Adam. Only bit by tiny bit does Alice realize that there are some dark spots in Adam's past. With Alice' growing suspicion the book picks up speed and turns into a gripping thriller. The whole book is told from Alice' perspective and this helps a lot to accept the choices she made. The reader is witness to her inner turmoil and shares her doubts and fears. I personally would have had a hard time to buy the story if it had been told differently. Told in first person as it is, it becomes believable and understandable. I very much recommend this book to those who like psychological suspense.
Rating: Summary: Scary, but... Review: I read this novel because I read that it was a scary book. I enjoy reading thrillers and mysteries, and while this book is a thriller and is certainly engrossing in that sense, I could have done without all the graphic sex scenes. A Harlequin Romance reader, I am not.
Rating: Summary: Not as far fetched as one may think Review: WOW! This book came to me at a time in my life that dare I say I never thought I would relate at the level I was able to. Having just met someone myself less than one week prior to my reading this novel and the spell I was under was uncanny to say the least. One never knows when life will throw you a spin, however being able to relate with Alice Louden at the level I did was quite overwhelming. That definately helped me turn the pages even faster and made my heart pound with every paragraph. The sexual tailspin I found myself in with a virtual stranger, exploring places I had only seen depicted in alternative lifestyle situations. Never judge others because one never knows when one will be able to relate to situations that used to see out of reach. Nicci French hats off to you for such a fantastic read, my heart no longer longs for the unknown, but beets all the more harder for the KNOWN.
Rating: Summary: A fatally attractive novel! Review: Killing Me Softly kept me turning the pages. The suspense put me in a trance. Nicci French's writing is very haunting; she reigns as one of the best and most original psychological thriller writers today. She -- like British counterpart Helen Zahavi -- has the effortless ability to capture you with her dark world and interesting characters. Alice Loundon's life couldn't be any more fulfilling. She is a successful career woman and is engaged to a wonderful man named Jake. Even though her personal life is in order, she feels that there is something, that there is a void that needs to be filled. Her ordered life lacks excitement. But things change as soon as she meets a handsome and mysterious stranger named Adam. After a night of passionate lovemaking with Adam, she dumps her fiance and marries Adam. Little does Alice know that she has embarked on a roller coaster ride of obsession and malice. There are some very intense moments in this novel. Killing Me Softly has a Fatal Attraction quality to it that will keep you turning the pages. There are many thrillers out there -- especially thrillers about obsession -- but Nicci French's language is original. I am pleased that this incredible novel surprised me into consciousness. I urge to read this magnificent novel.
