Rating: Summary: AP Reports ... Review: New York - A reader is suing two publishing houses over a murder mystery, "McNally's Dilemma," which has been marketed as a book by the late author Lawrence Sanders, but was actually written by someone else.
Rating: Summary: you can't duplicate lawrence sanders' archie mc nally Review: today i learned that lawrence sanders died. i only found out because i was searching to see if he had written any new books. as a very big fan of his books, i am deeply saddened by his death. i'm even more saddened by the publisher's attempt to replace lawrence sanders by having a ghost writer mimic(unsuccessfully)the essense of the archie books. when i first started reading this book, i sensed it was very different from the past books. the archie character had turned from eccentric to wierd. the author's mimicry of colorful words was overdone and was annoying more than it was interesting. i think it is only best to honor lawrence sander's talent by discontinuing any future archie books written by any other authors. no one can ever capture the essense and spirit of the characters in the archie books and i think it best to leave well enough alone. in summary, the new book was predictable, boring, disappointing, and a short read- i read 50 pages and put it away.the two stars was for giving the readers a final romp with archie and the gang.
Rating: Summary: Archy's Cake Sans Icing Review: I throughly enjoyed McNally's Dilemma, even if it wasn't written by the great Lawrence Sanders. Maybe it was the fact that I was looking forward to more of Sanders' work since I first read 'The First Deadly Sin', in high school, circa 1973. I do agree that the publisher (G.P Putnam's Sons) should have used Vincent Lardo's name on the cover as one reviewer suggested, with characters created by Lawrence Sanders or similar wording. I did not feel cheated, as I closely read all credits and acknowledgements before I start to read any book anyway. I thought Mr. Lardo captured the free-spirit of Archy beautifully. Like all of the Archy series, it was a fun read. I do hope Putnam publishes more in the series, but give the real author, Vincent Lardo, the credit. Hopefully, there is a final book of Mr. Sanders still waiting to be published! Lawrence Sanders, you will be missed! Buy McNally's Dilemma, it's worth it. Many thanks to Amazon.com, your service is outstanding! Three days after placing my order, McNally's Dilemma was at my doorstep, packaged perfectly, and in mint condition! Hollywood types: cast Ryan Stiles as Archy McNally & Danny Bonaduce as Binky Watrous!
Rating: Summary: mcnally's dilemma Review: i am a huge fan of lawrence sanders and i am saddened to learn of his death through your reviews. This book lacked the playfulness of his previous mcnally adventures and now i know why..
Rating: Summary: Long Live McNally! Review: Absolutely a great book with Lawrence Sander's style and that deliciously, enjoyable wit and humor. I hope to see many more of McNally books in the future. The twist and enjoyable dry-wit humor leaves one giggling and chuckling throughout the entire book. Bravo!
Rating: Summary: Not the REAL THING Review: Most of the McNally books took me a day or two to read because they were so funny. Archy McNally is such a great character! I love the use of words in the McNally books. However, this book took me about 1 1/2 weeks to read because it just didn't have the "zing" of the REAL McNally books. Something was missing from page one on. The story was OK, but I think I would have enjoyed it a lot more if I didn't feel like I was "tricked" into thinking Lawrence Sanders had written it. It just doesn't seem fair that the heirs can put his name on a book that was not written by the great Lawrence Sanders. What they have done is just short of fraud. Maybe next some great actors can pay someone to act "just like them" in a movie they can't do, Vincent van Gogh's family can pay someone to paint "just like him", and John Denver's heirs can pin his famous name on a new album of songs that sound somewhat like his.
Rating: Summary: Good not great entry to the series Review: Like other readers, I found this book lacking "something". I knew Sanders had passed away, but thought this was perhaps a final manuscript. When I finally looked onto the copyright page I realized that the family had hired another author to continue the series. The book was good enough, but the mystery was only all right (pretty simple to figure out early on - plus some parts that were a little hard to take - like not many people ever noticing the birth of a son took place twelve months after the death of the father when the plaques mentioning the birth/death dates were right beside one another!) The characters, however were great. I love all of Saunders' series stories and thought the Archy Mcnally books were exceptional. This book is worth reading if you are a fan or want a good story, although I would recommend any of the others, written by Sanders, first. I do hope that the family of Sanders does continue with these books, however I think it would be fair to fans of the series to note on the book's cover that it is actually written by another.
Rating: Summary: lawrence sanders is dead? Review: ok i knew something was wrong. i had never loved the archy mcnally series before because i believe that the deadly sin novels were lawrence sanders' best work but i had ENJOYED them well enough. this one just didn't work and now i know why. he didn't even write it! i knew the murderer and motive well before the middle of the book and ended up reading the end to confirm it. and voila. if you're new to sanders read the first second etc.. deadly sin novels. p.s. i agree with the movie casting mentioned in one of the reviews except for betty white as mama mcnally. i'm not sure who should do it but i don't see her as being right.
Rating: Summary: A story of deceit and greed. Review: As the founder of Discreet Inquuiries, Archy McNally has a new case. Archy is on the case of John Fairhurst III, one of the richest men on the beach. He is also secretly on the case of Geoffrey Williams, who has been murdered by his wife, Melva. Archy has two motives. One, to find the person blackmailing Fairhurst. The second, is to become closer to Veronica, Melva's daughter, who Archy must take care of for Melva. This story is one of deceit and greed. It runs on like a soap opera. Yes, it is somewhat boring at times, but I suggest that you read McNally's Dilemma by Lawrence Sanders.
Rating: Summary: You can tell that Sanders was missing. Review: Although the book was readable, those of us who are die-hard Archy McNally fans could definitely tell that Lawrence Sanders did not write this book. The Archy McNally in McNally's Dilemma is more wise-cracking than before. Preston McNally is more talkative. And correct me if I'm wrong, but I thought Archy despised blue jeans, yet this Archy stayed in them. Its the little things that I picked up on which didn't sound like the Archy McNally that I know and love. I was having Bewitched flashbacks when the two Darrins were switched with no explanation. The same can be said here. My last comment concerning this book concerns the mystery itself. If you've been reading murder-mystery novels for a while, you will probably guess the murderer and figure out the motive in the first 50 pages. Vincent Lardo, you need to be a little more creative.
