Summary: PLENTY OF TEETH....BUT NO BITE!
Review: I hit EXTINCT with plenty of excitement because as a certifiable "Aqua-Phobe" I just love shark books.

Mr. Wilson does a nice job of keeping the early suspense and really delivering on some nice deaths along the way (minors being eaten is always the sign of someone who is throwing P.C. out the window)...come on that's why you read a shark book...for the body count!

But sadly, the book swims off course near the last 25 pages and ends with a very silly turn of events...too silly to even hint at (but monster film fans of the 60's may have a shot at it).

Of all the shark books I've read...Extinct really comes up lacking. So if you're in need to be scared out of the water...stick to THE TRENCH, MEG, or the much overlooked HUNGER and make your thoughts of reading Extinct...well extinct! (pun intended)

Summary: Keeps you going
Review: Okay, so this was not a "literary classic", it was, however, not a bad book. You really need to let your imagination swim with this one. I thought Jaws was better, but it seams unfair to compare the two. We have all seen pictures of great whites, this is a fish of a different color. Read it, have fun with it.

Summary: "I think we'll need a bigger boat"
Review: I am sure that Charles Wilson knew when he wrote this book that comparisons to Jaws would be inevitable, but he wrote it anyway. What does it matter if there are some similarities? It is a totally different story and a great book. I find Extinct within the realm of believability (i.e., Loch Ness monster--no one is sure that it is not a plesiosaur). Great science fiction takes a scientific plausability that few people think about and turns it into a great story. That is exactly what Charles Wilson has done with Extinct; this was the first book that I ever read by Wilson, and it is still my favorite. The plot is eventful, the characters are likeable, and the climax is astounding. Recently I learned that NBC has indefinitely suspended the mini series due to cost. Why not let Speilberg have a crack at it? This fantastic book is just begging to be put on screen. Who wouldn't like to see a mechanical megalodon added to Universal studios? Extinct is a page-turner, and Charles Wilson is a wonderful science fiction writer.

Summary: There's always a bigger fish...
Review: A young boy watches two of his friends go under water. His dog starts barking. His friends never resurface. And so begins Extinct, which will probably before ever known as the 90's other giant shark book, getting nowhere near the publicity (or blasting) of Steven Alten's Meg. But unlike Meg, this book takes it's plot seriously, and despite the name, revealling the Megalodon's presence is a big spoiler, as when the marauding shark is first discovered, it is mistaken for a normal great white. As for characters, well, I'm sure Wilson read a lot of Peter Benchley before writing this, because most would be right at home on the pages of Beast, Jaws or Creature. There is drama and action, with some mystery added, and in the end it is entertaining. But the twist in the end, while jaw-dropping storywise, is highly unlikely reality wise, which is not such a good idea for a novel whose main draw is it not as comicbook as Meg. Still a good read.

Summary: great read
Review: i found Charles Wilsons "Extinct" a very well written, and captivating book. it was very factual up to the end and then he stretched truth a little. but even so it gave the book very good ending. i can't wait to see the miniseries when it comes out.

Summary: Better than Jaws
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. Although some of the ideas were far fetched;Sharks communicating vocally; many of the facts in the book seemed right on the mark. I would recommend this book to any shark enthusiasts who believe the possible existence of Megalodon.

Summary: sharks a lot
Review: I liked this book. It was pretty intense at times. A little far fetched with sharks communicating orally. A little bit predictable. When hunting for the shark, it comes right a way. Somehow, a little too convenient. But it was a fun read. I recommend it.

Summary: Great Book
Review: I think alot of people were a little too critical over the book. I think it was a great idea with a wonderful story line. It was a science fiction type of story not meant to be taken so literally and seriously. This book was very interesting and gave us information on the shark, but not so extensively that it would have bored a person who was not a shark fanatic. I am a fanatic myself, though, and I still thought it was a great book! :0)Also, Great Whites are the only shark that can actually stick its head out of the water and look around, so it is plausible that the Meglodon could do the same. Maybe not for extended periods of time, but it could. All in all, it was a suspenceful and interesting book!

Summary: suspension of disbeleif can only go so far
Review: i would have much rather given this novel 2 and a half stars, as it's not really bad enough for 2, but not good enough for three. i finished it (incidentally rather quickly), so that's a testament. a lot of wilson's ideas are just a little too far out there, and just don't mesh. the vocally communication between the sharks is dare-say rediculous, but that's the only BAD idea he had. he seems to be combining too many stories at once, which detracts from the over-all story. i recommend reading it, but have far from high expectations.--paul death
