Review: heralded by Donald Yates as the most outstanding detective novel in the spanish language. written a year before Orwell's 1984, it anticipates its totalitarian mood in a strange country (una enigmatica ciudad austral) in which a germanic regime investigates a series of perplexing murders. Borges called it a pure detective novel. it includes red herrings and all and reiterates the fact that the Argentine analytical detective genre rivals and even at times bests the English tradition.
