Rating: Summary: A fascinating thriller Review: Having been around the military all my life, I found this book to be totally captivating. While not a war book, it has many elements of military training as core elements in its plot. It also captures the characters one encounters not only in the military but in the civilian services which deal with the military. From the jungles of central America through the panhandle of Florida, the reader becomes one with this team of special forces Marines. And then the action actually picks up as they are hounded by the Russians, Cubans and our own government through the States and Europe. Well worth the read.
Rating: Summary: Semper Fi - all for one, one for all Review: Thomas Muldoon's well balanced military thriller "An Execution of Honor" commences in the steaming jungle enclave of sadistic dictator of the fictitious Central American country of San Tomas, Luis Cardona. Cardona, his staff and family are fleeing from Communist rebels who are overthrowing his corrupt government. Because San Tomas is a last bastion against Communism, Cardona is being supported by the U.S. government. He was being ushered out of the country by an elite 9 man Marine Force Recon team. The team had just discovered that Cardona was involved in a huge cocaine smuggling business. The leaders of the team confronted Cardona, threatening to expose his dirty business. Before they could do so, they were ambushed and captured by the Presidential Guard. Cardona ordered them mutilated, tortured and left for dead. His biggest mistake was not killing them before they were discovered by their brothers in arms.
The seven remaining members of the team, were lead by cool and cerebral born leader Marine sergeant Joe Craig and electronics whiz Ted Billings. The team was stunned to learn that the deaths of their team were being swept under the rug by President Mason and the U.S. government. It seems that Cardona was being palatially exiled in the Florida Panhandle. His cocaine enterprise was being condoned as its profits were to be used to finance an army to overthrow the Communists in San Tomas. In reality the money was being siphoned off to Fidel Castro and to line the pockets of Cardona.
Craig, Billings and the Marine Force Recon Team all resigned their commissions in disgust and swore to avenge the deaths of their buddies.
A break in, 2 years later, to the thought to be impregnable Kirks Armory in Ft. Benning, Georgia marshalled the beginning of their plan of revenge. Kirk's Armory housed the most secret and futuristic weapons developed by the military for use by only the most elite teams. This developement made the team marked men by both the U.S. and Cuban governments as their obvious target was Cardona.
Muldoon, using his military background patterns an inventive and creative plan that leads the reader through twists and turns as he developes this entertaining tale.
Rating: Summary: Entertaining and creative Review: This book was entertaining from start to finish. Creative fiction at its best. Not everyone enjoys creative fiction though, some readers demand every little item in a novel should be fact, negating the whole idea of fiction. The weaponry in this book. I don't know whether it's real or not, probably not, but a retired delta Force colonel friend of mine was unsure so that makes it a fine creation on the author's part. The tale of murdered marines who must be avenged is a good one. The result of the execution of the marines' murderer, a matter of honor for the other members of the USMC Force recon team, is exciting. The death of some of the heroes is unexpected and more realistic than enemy bullets never hitting any of the good guys. A great creative novel.
Rating: Summary: Wooden dialog; cardboard characters; imaginary hardware Review: I can't believe I read the whole thing.Did the author contribute the "good" reviews of this book? It's hard to imagine anyone enjoying this clunker ... The military hardware described in this book is beyond silly ... most of it violates laws of physics or biological reality ... a gas that kills everyone in a large room in less than a second? Get real! That politicians are capable of the deceit and vileness portrayed in the book is perhaps the only viable part of the book; the characters are one-dimensional, inadequately developed, and obviously designed for their roles. That an "elite" specwar team would accept Theban Stone's cowboy antics violates every precept of their selection process ... but it's necessary as a plot device. Save time ... buy something else ... anything else.
Rating: Summary: A USMC Treat Review: Every Marine or former Marine I know who have read this book raves about it. An action thriller that emphasizes the spirit of Marines past and present. Semper fi is not just a slogan, it is a creed. Kill marines and get away with it? Not on your life even if U.S. government tries to make it all go away. Knowing you face probable death, yet still preserving your honor is what the marines are all about--- even if they have to go againmst the U.S. and other foreign governments.
