Summary: It might as well be set in Pittsburgh....
Review: A murder mystery set in ancient Egypt-who killed Queen Nefertiti?-should be interesting. But with its lack of descriptive narrative it might as well be set in Pittsburgh. The writing is dull and rudimentary, another contribution to The Dumbing Down of America.

Summary: Another "you are there" view of ancient Egypt!
Review: As someone fascinated with Egyptian history, I was thrilled to discover Ms. Robinson's Lord Meren. I have devoured every one of them. This one is no exception. It gives a deeper glimpse of Lord Meren's family--his daughters are coming of age nicely. My one criticism--and it is a minor one!-is that is was soemwhat distracting to jump back and forth between two eras. The book is not only worth the read, but I'm already looking forward to the next one.

Summary: Best Thus Far in This Egyptian Historical Mystery
Review: Drinker of Blood is the fifth mystery involving Lord Meren, the Eyes and Ears of Pharoah Tutankhamun. In this outing, Lord Meren continues his search for the murderer of Tutankhamun's sister-in-law, Queen Nefertiti. He must, however, conduct his search in complete secrecy because the Queen had been married to the heretic Pharoah Akenaten whose reign was disastrous to the people, the land, and the royal family. Lord Meren dares not make public his knowledge and suspicions lest he disturb the peace and prosperity of the current Pharoah's reign. As Lord Meren gathers evidence, he is foiled at every turn by the person responsible for the Queen's death. Indeed, his very life is threatened the nearer he moves toward the truth.

This is, by far, the best entry in this excellent series. The story is in two voices - Lord Meren's and Queen Nefertiti's. As the reader is given insights into Queen Nefertiti's life as the Pharoah's "beautiful one," Lord Meren is seeking clues to who her killer is. The story moves quickly despite the two different times and voices. As in the past, Robinson's research and knowledge provides the historical setting while her imagination provides the danger.

Summary: Disappointed
Review: I enjoyed the first four books in this series, but I found "Drinker of Blood" to be a disappointment. It's one long tease. The other books, although interconnected, present a main mystery and solve it. This one did not. Also, I thought the set-up of Meren to be so obvious I couldn't believe the Pharoah & his advisors would buy into it. The shifting back and forth in time became annoying. Finally, I'm getting a bit tired of Meren's arrogance. Can't he loosen up a bit?! One thing I did like was that Bener thoroughly showed up her annoyingly know-it-all adopted brother. Go girl!

Summary: An excellent read, though....
Review: I found myself a bit cheated. It was like reading two seperate books. I found myself rushing through the Nefertiti sections to get back to the main storyline. It was not as confusing as I thought it would be and I enjoyed the entire book, would even recommend it, but I wish there would have been more present and less past.

Summary: I wasn't impressed!
Review: I found this book kind of dull, and I really hate a story that ends where it begins! It is good, but not wonderful!

I recommend Warlock, which is an exceptional book, and The Egyptian, by Mika Watari, whick is the best book I've ever read regarding Ancient Egypt!

Summary: Not as gripping as the previous books in the Meren series.
Review: I have read all the Meren books and usually finish them in one or two sittings. I love the characters and the rich details of the time and setting. I had Drinker of Blood on order several weeks before it was published. However, it then took me over a month to finish reading it. I am not sure if it was the device of switching back and forth in time that kept me from getting hooked or if it was just that I didn't care as much as Meren did about who killed Nefertiti. At any rate, I like Dr. Robinson's style and will hope for better things next time around.

Summary: Not her usual high caliber
Review: I have read the other Lord Meren books and have been delighted with the characters and the "you are there" feel of Ms Robinson's mysteries. In this installment, the characters were one dimensional, the time transitions awkward and the story felt "told" - like it needed more development. Still looking forward to the next installment though.

Summary: An excellent book; I hope the next one comes out faster!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I wish it were longer (my only real complaint about this series). :) I also liked seeing more of Tutankhamun, a character I find interesting; I thought he was a little more developed here than in past encounters with him in the series. As someone who only rarely reads mysteries, I'm more interested in the regular characters than in the mystery-plots (I'd love to find out more details about Meren's own past, etc., than the general knowledge we've been given), but I thought the mystery so far has been well-written and interesting. I'm waiting eagerly for the next book!
