Rating: Summary: "Solid, Short Stories In Combat #1" Review: Not a single story here disappointed. To me, Dale Brown's "Leadership Material" was the best of the three. Loved how he intertwined the different personalities of Col. Norman and Major McLanahan. Norman, an Air Force accountant assigned to a promotion board, feels an outcast in the pilot-dominated world of the Air Force. Now his prejudices are coming out as he grades candidates for promotion from Major to Lt. Colonel. One of the the files he comes across is McLanahan's. On paper, he feels Mac is so woeful he should be thrown out of the USAF. But on the other side of the world, as the Gulf War winds down, McLanahan shows his skills and bravery as the Old Dog crew must stop an suped-up, stealthy Tu-160 Iranian bomber from sinking a US carrier."Lash-up" by Larry Bond was a pretty good story. Character development was decent. The interesting part was seeing how a newly formed group must overcome bureaucracy to come up with a space plane to neutralize a Chinese ASAT system destroying the GPS satellite network. Really enjoyed the David Hagberg story "Breaking Point" where CIA DDO Kirk McGarvey must prevent an all-out war between China and Taiwan. Nice drama as McGarvey infiltrates Taiwan. Loved the captain of the Chinese Han-class sub. Very crafty guy with zero tolerance for mistakes who tries to foil America's plan.
Rating: Summary: Cyberwar Review: The brief novella, Cyberknights, by Harold W Coyle provides a no nonsense look at the processing of an attack against an imagined enemy. To believe that immunity exists in cyberspace is to be delusional. Mr. Coyle removes this misconception. There is not one item mentioned that is not acheivable today. I was reassured by the use of the T1 facilities dedicated to the attack. I was impressed by the total lack of canonization of the criminal element that maintains they should have free reign in cyberspace. Thanks for a good read.
Rating: Summary: Good reading - a taste of 3 well-known authors Review: These are all good novellas, but I found that the Larry Bond story (Lash-up) dragged at times (and the giant 'rifle' should have been explained better for those unfamiliar with the concept) and the Dale Brown book was more than a bit preachy, but the combat sequences were top-notch. The third novella (Breaking Point) by David Hagberg was, in my opinion, the best of the three. I've never read Hagberg before but I will keep him on my list of authors to watch for.
Rating: Summary: Something for everyone Review: This book has something for everyone. I was very pleased with the forward, and the stories that followed were terrific. If you like military fiction and are interested in where things might be headed, order this book. I'm not one to give complete praise, and there were one or two stories that even though I read them, they weren't my cup of tea. But that is what makes an anthology great, there's always something in there for you. I will note that most of these stories almost scream out to be expanded into full length novels. I would certainly buy any book that was expanded from my favorites in this anthology. This is the kind of stuff that keeps people like me buying books.
Rating: Summary: A Brillant Collection Review: This book is a great collection of short novels that illustrate the wars of the future against terrorists, in cyberspace, and in orbit. The stories are to the point, action pacted, and sadly, were not made into full novels themselves. If you are sick of Clancy and other authors that are too busy discussing politics to write a good novel, than this book is for you. All of the futuristic stories are excellent, and will introduce you to the best in the business (if you don't know them already).
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Book! Review: This is a very novel concept to writing a book. In Combat#1 you have Larry Bond,Dale Brown, and David Hagberg as the authors of three short novels. These are three of the most read authors all together in one book. The first story written by Larry Bond is cakked Lashup. In this story the Unites States has to deal with China shooting down their satellites. A very good story. The next story is written by Dale Brown. This story tells about the role of a review board. It also has some good sequences. The third story is written by David Hagberg which features his favorite action character Kirk McGarvey. This story involves the rescue of a Chinese dissident. This series of books is truly quality reading. You have some of the best authors in the world featured in the Combat series. Buy this book. You will not be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: Combat #2 not As Good as #1 Review: This paperback contained war stories from three noted authors. The first story was by Stephen Coonts. It tells of an ex Marine sniper and a female military pilot who team up to kill the terrorists who were responsible for killing her parents. In a story authored by Dean Ing a private investigator,a bounty hunter and an FBI agent team up and discover a terrorist plot that could lead to thousands of deaths. The final story by Barrett Tillman tells the story of a group of retired fighter pilots who battle enemy jets over the skies of California. Combat #2 was not as good a book as Combat #1. I hope that Combat #3 is an improvement over Combat #2.
Rating: Summary: A Great Read Review: This was a really good buy. I have read all of Coonts books along with Clancy (except his Net Force), Brown, & Coyle. This is a great book for when you want to get down and dirty with the action within a short period. Each short is creatively done and reflects different views on combat and its effects on people and machines. This is also a great way to learn about up and coming authors in this particular field.
