Rating: Summary: Perfect for early teens Review: I read science fiction voraciously when I was a kid (still do as an adult. :)) and this novel's one of my all-time favorites. McCaffrey creates a living world filled with history, and truly heroic characters driven by a passion to not only survive, but to thrive.Lessa is one of the strongest women in science fiction, and F'lar's the sort of man teenaged boys want to grow up to be. Together they form a strong, dynamic couple that shows what relationships can and should be like. And then there's the dragons. They are simply awe-inspiring, and its impossible to read this book -- or its successors -- without wishing that some how, some way, you could have one. Their like draconic Labrador Retrievers, filled with love, admiration and more than a little stubborness. The book's immediate sequels -- Dragonquest and The White Dragon -- are equally good, but I've been disappointed by most of the other books in the series. With the exception of Dragondawn, they just don't seem to have the same passion as the earlier books. If you know pre-teens or early teens who're into science fiction or fantasy, do them a favor and buy them this book!
Rating: Summary: A Little Disapoited. Review: Dragonflight was ok if you can stand it when books are really slow in the beginning. After you get through all the boring stuff in the beginning of the book it was pretty good but it wasn't as good as I expected it to be. I wouldn't suggest anyone to read this book unless they are really into reading and can actually stand reading the whole book if it is boring in the beginning.
Rating: Summary: great book! Review: The book was a very good book.I loved it!It was exciting and adventure like also.It had character emotions and fufilling events.
Rating: Summary: On the Down Side :-) Review: Yes, I give this book five stars. And so do many others. If you want to know why, go read their review. :-) I'll take my time, instead, to explain what my reservations are, _despite_ thinking it's a true five stars book. First, the book is out of place in the Pern series. Nothing bad by itself, but you expect to see a certain kind of thing, and it just doesn't turn up. The beginning of Dragonflight strongly hints of elaborate codes of etiquette, of subtle speech and such, and that just doesn't materialize. As the book progresses, all of that dissipates, and is nowhere to be found on the other books of the series. Second, I don't like dragonriders. :-) Oh, they themselves are ok, but I don't like the way the society works, the overbroad rights of dragonriders. It irks me (they _are_ the good guys in the series, after all). Maybe that's one of the reasons that the books I most like in the whole Pern series are those that have more commoners and less dragonriders. But Dragonflight is all about Dragonriders. You just don't get to see anyone else in this book. The heavily sexist society also irks me to some extent, and is curious how this book is possibly the one where this is most heavily felt. Pern's history begins in an equalitarian society, and progresses to an equalitarian society too. And that leds to another disappointment. As the book begins, you expect to see a sexist society with strong gender division of work, were a few women hold positions of great power. Well, maybe, but you just don't see that developed. There's also little secondary character development, something which contrasts strongly with the series as a whole. And I guess that's all. The book is great, as is the Pern series. All my misgivings are rendered irrelevant by the great story of Pern.
Rating: Summary: VERY GOOD! (A bit complicated though) Review: As I indicated in the title, Dragonflight is a terrific book. It doesn't just stay on one specific topic however, but ranges from Weyr life, to politics between Holds, to romance, (both dragon and human) *sigh*. The only reason I gave it four stars is becasue it is reeeeeally complex. DO NOT ATTEMPT TO READ THIS OR ANY OF THE OTHER PERN BOOKS UNLESS FULLY AWAKE AND FUNCTIONAL! The names and statuses would be nearly impossable to remember if the book didn't have a guide in the back and god help the person who doesn't understand the plot which indeed, seems very complicated as well. P.S. very good book for long plane/car rides or long waits.
Rating: Summary: Loved it from page one!!! Review: This was my introduction to McCaffrey's writing, and it won't be the last! From page one 'till the end I was enthralled. The story of a dredge known as Lessa, her story and her growing popularity among others on Pern was in itself a seperate story. The whole idea of telepathically talking to dragons is beyond anything I've read to date. The going 'between' idea is yet another phenom of McCaffrey's writing. The thread, silver strands that fall from the Red Star and incinerate anything living, is as much of a villain as some of the characters. I can't wait to finish this long, yet promising series...
Rating: Summary: A wondeful book. Review: I first discoverd the world of Pern in sixth grade, having to go it the comuter lab and read excerpts(?) from the book Dragonsong. I loved Dragonsong when i read it in the computer lab, however I was extremely dissapointed until about 100 pages and I loved the book. I expecially fell in love with Dragonfilght, I couldn't put it down! It's been my favorite book since. Lessa is such a great character, the story of dragons and firelizards builds up and makes sense. i love F'lar and F'nor, and Jaxom. Ramoth and Lessa love eact other so muchis so beautiful. Its like it could really happen. Dragons being of only certain colors, how the where breed it amazing. I highley reccommed this book and the series(I finshed All the Weyrs of Pern a couple days ago). Anne McCaffery has a style of writing that makes you love the characters.
Rating: Summary: Confusing yet Rewarding Review: I first became interested in this series because I love dragons- I was born in the year of the dragon. I liked the myths associated with them, how they can breathe fire, how some were evil and some are good. So, I happened to glance upon this book on the library shelf, I took it home, and it threw me into a highly imaginative world of dragons, their riders and some very cool plots. Dragon queens, Weyr lords and ladies and all those other people are sometimes hard to understand. So, when I first read it it took me a while to understand the whole thing, and it let a lot of sequels open to it. Even though it was a bit confusing at the beginning and middle by the time I got to the end I understood everything, even the sporelike Threads that everyone in the story was so crazy about. I guess this is a good book cuz it let me wanting to read more of Ann McCaffrey's works, so if you like dragons I recommend this book (but if you dont' like very confusing plots then don't read it)!
Rating: Summary: The Best Book Ever Review: My mother had read these books when she was young and then pretty much made me read read them because I was reading another series over and over again. The book is about a girl named Lessa whose family was killed by Lord Fax(a person who killed the lords of alot of other Holds and became Lord Of The High Reaches)and Lessa hid and planned revenge on Fax.One day when Fax and the Dragonmen came on a search, Lessa was offered to have a chance against other girls to be Wyerwomen. The queen egg decided her and she became Wyerwomen. Soon after F'lar became Wyerleader and the threads came. They had to go 'between'. That is as much as I should tell you but this books is the best one I have ever read, you really need to read it.
Rating: Summary: Inspiring Review: I was first exposed to the book Dragonflight at the tender age of 5 - yes that's right, unlike most five year olds who had bedtime stories such as Snow White etc, I got Dragonflight (and Lord of the Rings I may add). And that is what started my fascination with Anne McCaffrey's world of Pern. As a young, impressionable 5 year old, I have no doubt that the intelligent, resourceful female characters depicted in Ms McCaffrey's novels formed extremely inspiring role models and was probably one of the reasons my mother read these kind of books to me (another one being a book called "The Practical Princess") - that and because she herself was "hooked" on them and with me, found an excuse to read them!! Of course the fantastic DRAGONS contributed to my interest and love of the books - who wouldn't be fascinated with these huge majestic beasts, and who wouldn't want one for a friend and companion, who empathizes your every thought and feeling. And of course the equally resourceful, charismatic and wonderful hero's of the stories should also be given a significant amount of credit. As an adult I still love reading Ms McCaffrey's books, and have red and collected all published Pern books and just about all of her other series. I still have the tattered, worn Dragonflight book my mother first read to me some 20 odd years ago - taking pride of place in my collection. Lessa's raise from kitchen drudge to Queen Dragonrider and the hope of Pern (and F'lars plans for the future) takes readers on a fascinating journey to a new planet where you become acquainted with interesting characters and the awesome DRAGONS for which Ms McCaffrey is so famous for creating. Dragonflight is a great starting point for people wanting to read Ms McCaffrey's books or any si-fi book for that matter. Ms McCaffrey's books are moving, inspiring, exciting, romantic, suspenseful and down right enjoyable! I can happily admit that I have laughed, cried and triumphed with the characters of Ms McCaffrey's worlds. Dragonflight and any of Ms McCaffrey's novels are easy to "get into" and hard to put down - requiring almost no effort to read - they simply flow. They are great for young, old, male and female. They are most definitely not predictable, or boring in any shape or form. There are not many authors who have managed to keep me glued to the pages series after series after series. Indeed there are not many books I would read more than once, however Dragonflight I have read a number of times. I hope Ms McCaffrey keeps on writing, because I will keep on reading and eagerly await the new releases.
