Summary: How I would like to view myself if I were more adventurous.
Review: Mrs. Pollifax is the quintesentual elderly widow with more wits, common sense and downright delightful character that many more of us wish we had the courage to be. She combines a great sense of humor, wisdom borne of living life to the fullest without having to resort to contrived ideas. Her life as portrayed through her books shows what most of us over 60 would like to think we are capable of. An excellent writer who combines the written word with such skill that you picture yourself right there seeing it all happen. I get a copy of her books and sit right down and read the entire book through in 1 day then am sorry the story is over. I want more of her works.

Summary: Charming debut novel
Review: Mrs. Pollifax, a widow with grown children, lives in New Brunswick, New Jersey. She goes to meetings of the Garden Club, but all in all, she feels that her life is dull, dreary, and without purpose. When pressed by her doctor to reveal her secret ambition, she admits that she has always wanted to be a spy. She travels to Washington, D.C., and makes an appointment with the director of the CIA to see if he needs any new spies. At first she is gently turned down, but circumstances conspire to put her in the right place at the right time. She is hired as a courier and given a straightforward assignment in Mexico. Just before she is to receive some important microfilm, disaster strikes and she finds herself being captured by a very unfriendly government. Mrs. Pollifax soon finds herself in an Albanian prison camp, where she becomes acquainted with two other prisoners. The rest of her story is highly entertaining, as the resourceful woman with the boring life suddenly has more

adventure than she knows what to do with.

Summary: Entertaining, lighthearted fun
Review: Please don't pass Mrs. Emily Pollifax by! She may be 'older', wear bizarre hats and be a little naive, but she's one plucky lady! If I were imprisoned in Albania, there's no one I'd rather have in my cell. Each book adds depth to her character.

Summary: Charming Debut of Mrs. Pollifax
Review: The first book in the beloved Mrs. Pollifax series gives the background as to how this elderly, yet irrepressible grandmother joins the CIA. Bored and disillusioned with her life, she decides to volunteer to be a spy with the CIA. She dresses herself up (hat and all), shows up on the doorstep of the CIA building, and waits to meet with the director. A mix-up occurs, and she finds herself on a whirlwind adventure that sends her around the globe and tests her patience, strength, and determination. Only Mrs. Pollifax could find her way out of prison in Albania, and helping other prisoners, she proves to herself and the CIA that she is an invaluable resource.

Having read the entire Mrs. Pollifax series, I was hooked by this charming debut. Mrs. Pollifax was vulnerable in the beginning (she contemplates suicide when she feels that she is not needed) but finds inner strength to overcome all of the ordeals she faces while on her mission for the CIA. The book was also an introduction to another wonderful character, Farrell, who plays a large part in this and future books in the series. If you are looking for something a bit unexpected and like adventure, try this series. Enjoy!

Summary: An unexpected first adventure
Review: The first book in this great series is suspensful. A bored Mrs. Pollifax decides to take up spying to enliven her life. Her first assignment sends her to Mexico, but it isn't long before she's in Albania as a prisoner. Her escape is truly amazing. The book dragged a little in the middle while she is a prisoner, but I read the last third in one sitting; there was no place to put it down and not have Mrs. Pollifax in trouble!

Summary: Great Begining!
Review: The series opener, this book has a lot to reccommend. Imagine your grandmother joining the CIA, and getting trapped in Albania her first time out. An excellent tale, with a lot of fun. Get them all, she keeps on going!

Summary: THIS BOOK IS CHARMING!
Review: This book is absolutely charming. It deals with an amateur that has to deal with each obstacle with her wits. Foreign locales and unexpected events made this a joy to read.

Summary: All the plot developments were not unexpected
Review: This is the first time I read a book by Dorothy Gilman's book. I was a bit disappointed, because my Japanese review book says it is a very funny spy story and Amazon.com average customer review rates it 5 stars. It was funny, but not so much. I thought the story was too old-fashioned. Unfortunately all the plot developments were not unexpected before I had finished to read it.
