Rating: Summary: A Lot of Fun Review: I recently reread Dorothy Gilman's "The Unexpected Mrs. Pollifax" for the first time in over a decade. I remembered loving the Pollifax series, but I had forgotten just how much fun the books are to read! The reader just cannot stop turning the pages to see what the elderly, quick-witted spy is going to do next. Don't let the heroine's advanced age turn you off. I first read the book when I was about ten or twelve years old, I'm now twenty-five. Just a wonderful reading experience and highly recommended to any audience.
Rating: Summary: I wanna be like Mrs. Pollifax when I'm 58 Review: I thoroughly enjoyed my first adventure with Mrs. Pollifax. What a quirky character for a CIA spy: plucky but demure, shrewd yet totally trusting, a little rebellious and always polite. The middle lagged a little bit, but the rest of book zipped by effortlessly. Ms. Gilman's prose is interlaced with funny, unexpected revelations about how humans deal with precarious situations. And I liked how her sinister rogues seemed like humans, rather than caricatures. I can't wait to read the next in the series.

Rating: Summary: An unexpectedly entertaining read Review: I've been trying to read a few "classic" mysteries lately. Most of them have been well written stories but rarely page turners. I picked Mrs. Pollifax up at the library the other day because the tape was there (and the tapes on my list were all checked out). Was I ever surprised. This was a really fun and entertaining read. The jist of the story is that your grandmother joins the CIA in the 1960's. I had two grandmothers of Mrs. Pollifax's age and the imagery is wonderful. There are plenty of plot summaries elsewhere in this page. Suffice it to say that even after 35 years, this is a good book. Sure, it's a bit dated but if you think of it as a historical mystery you'll do just fine. There is plenty of witty banter and humor. Some of the plotting and action is a bit stereotypical but done with just the right amount of parody. Bottom-line: An oldie but a goodie. A cozy with international intrigue and humor. I'll be reading the next book (The Amazing Mrs. Pollifax) soon.

Rating: Summary: To be like Mrs. Pollifax is my goal in retirement! Review: In the UNEXPECTED MRS. POLLIFAX, author Dorothy Gilman continues to amaze and amuse with the antics of an older woman who refuses to fit the mold. I have read all the "Mrs. Pollifax" books -- and look forward EAGERLY to the next. Keep up the good work, Mrs. Pollifax!
Rating: Summary: I just loved the old lady thing Review: It wasn't as much of a mystery as I was hoping for, but I just loved the old lady thing. The Dutchess. This book was so wonderful.

Rating: Summary: Geriatric spy wannabe naively tries out for CIA Review: Mrs Pollifax is a retired, "now what do I do with my life" who has always longed to be a spy. Naively, she visits the CIA & applies, where she is met with some derision until she is mistaken for a professional & sent on a courier job to Mexico. While there, she is drugged & finds herself tied up with a real spy on her way to Albania. Her very unprofessionalism & strong character shines through the entire story & makes you laugh & admire her pluck & ingenuity. I have read this book over & over & still enjoy it every time.
