Rating: Summary: Icefire review Review: This book was well-written, but it got boring at times. The authors used WAY too many abbreviations for things (like government agencies, etc.). How are we supposed to keep them all straight? NORAD, NEST, OPCOMM, NCMM, NSCS, etc, etc, etc. It's quite confusing in that respect. Otherwise, it was decent and entertaining for the most part.

Rating: Summary: The plausible terror scenario makes the story work Review: This story is based on a novel idea for an act of planetary terrorism. Nuclear weapons are used to break the Ross ice shelf in Antarctica from its' connections to the land. This creates an enormous tidal wave that threatens all coastal areas in the Pacific rim. As I began the book, I spent a great deal of thought wondering if such an event was possible. Once the conclusion was reached that it was, then the story became much more engrossing. It is an ideal premise for a suspense novel, in that it is a plausible scenario. Initial premise aside, the authors keep up a rapid pace, building towards a conclusion that ends far too quickly. While the main plot is strong and keeps your interest, there are some subplot lines that weakened the story. The general that took the position that millions of lives should be sacrificed so that a war could be started is an artificial character. His failures would have been clear for all to know and there was no way that he could have emerged as a hero. The battles between the two main characters also became a strain and I found myself skimming those sections devoted to their quarrels. Nevertheless, for the most part I was hooked on the story and ignored all the calls of my other work until I completed it.
Rating: Summary: WOW Review: This was a good read. From start to finish the novel is exciting and keeps you interested.
Rating: Summary: A great beach book Review: This was a wonderful techno-thriller that rumbles along like the giant wave that is the subject of the story. Previous readers have already commented on minor geological and military innacuracies, but what detracted slightly from this story was an irritating penchant by the authors for political correctness. I think the comparisons with Clancey are appropriate because this book was certainly comparable to Clancy's thrillers, but he too can distract when he injects his own political view of the world into a good story that will stand very well on its own. Maybe what we need is an apoltical techno thriller. Until that time, this is about as good as it gets. I recommend this book, especially to readers looking for a rapid fire vacation book.
Rating: Summary: Awesome! A Must read! Review: This, to me, is a great book. It starts out a little slow but from the moment Captain Webber gets shot and starts the deadly game of hide and seek from the terrorists on the ice in Antartica, the pace quickens and it never slows down much throughout the entire book. Although the character of Dr. Rey was an extremely annoying one, and at times I actually found myself practically hating her, to me that is a mark of great writing. Characters so believable that they actually evoke strong emotions from you! The character of General Abbot was a great one, although I certainly hope there are not people like him in our military. He was so wrapped up in his quest to achieve personal glory and for his place in history that he was willing to sacrifice thousands of lives to achieve it. All in all, an awesome book. If you are a Tom Clancy fan like me, this is a must read!
Rating: Summary: Advance comments on ICEFIRE Review: We were fortunate enough to receive the following comments on ICEFIRE prior to publication. These quotes appear on the back cover. "... a hardwired, totally riveting, dare-you-to-put-it-down story of disaster, heroism, and suspense. There's no need for techno-thriller fans to wait for the next Clancy or Coonts; ICEFIRE is the best suspense novel of its type since THE HUNT FOR RED OCTOBER. "I've offered quotes on perhaps three dozen novels over the last decade, what publishers call 'blurbs.' I have never offered one with more confidence. If you like high-tech suspense, read this book. It's as good as they come." - STEPHEN KING "... a hard-hitting, heart-stopping thriller that pits the U.S. military at its best against man-made, worldwide disaster at its worst. A sharp look at where our future enemies could come from, and the kind of men - and women - and technology - it will take to face them." - RICHARD MARCINKO coauthor of THE ROGUE WARRIOR
Rating: Summary: A Good Book... If you focus on the right storyline Review: While not a big reader, the reviews on the back cover convinced me to buy "Icefire". 700 pages was a little out of my comfort zone, but it was the most interesting backcover on the book rack that day. The book got off to a great start. The hero, Mitch Webber, found illegal nuclear activity at the South Pole, which was made more suspenseful by his "friend's" involvement. I sat back, ready to read about their exciting encounters. I was surprised and disappointed when Nick got away and the bombs went off. It was way too early for that. Guess the good guy lost. As the book left Nick behind and introduced the rest of the cast and story, I had to force myself to stay with it, but was glad I did. Yes, there were some unbelieveable moments, an annoying Cory (enough already), too much techno-speak and a few too many acronyms, but that didn't phase me as much as I would have thought. It helped that I was able to move forward without having to constantly refer back. The book slowly drew me in. If you like Clancy, you will probably like this book. If not, then give it a try, but try to get to page 250 to 300 before giving up. While it starts fast, the aforementioned change in focus interrupts the momentum, which is gained back as you turn the pages. I understand a movie is in the offing. With the explosions, action and thiller storyline, I am wondering if Bruce Willis could pull it off. Maybe a bit old for this now, Nick? One of the Baldwin brothers may fit (Alec?). I am not able to come up with Cory quite yet, and I wonder if there is a George C. Scott like character out there to play General Abbott. In any event, if it becomes a move, I will buy a ticket.
Rating: Summary: Best book I ever read! Review: Wonderful book...I read it in less than 3 days; I could not put it down. There was never a point where it slowed down or became boring. Every part and detail are crucial to the story and cannot be missed. For those who like to read the last page of a novel to see how it ends, you won't learn a thing. I only hope that more and more people have the opportunity to read Icefire.
