Summary: As one who is fascinated by Jack the Ripper...
Review: and other true crime, I think this is the BEST of the Elizabeth MacPherson series! It takes a true student to realize that the name of the man who wants the murder committed AND the names of some of the tour members are true (albeit mostly peripheral) characters in the actual Jack the Ripper case. I also found the details of the other true crimes like visiting old friends. And what is more satisfying than the truly evil Susan getting her just desserts while the merely unfortunate benefit by it? I found this laugh-out-loud hilarious!

Summary: Can you plead self defense if you kill someone who is..?
Review: Can you plead self defense if you kill someone who is boring you to death? I'm not refering to Sharyn McCrumb who is never boring, but to the title character. Of the three Elizabeth MacPherson novels I've read so far, this is my favorite. They are light reading compared to McCrumb's ballad series, but enoyable nonetheless. For a person who has thirteen letters in her name on 2 of which are vowels, Sharyn McCrumb sure has a way with words.

Summary: For Anyone who has traveled with a tour group
Review: I could not stop laughing. Having traveled with many tour groups I not only recognized Susan; I recognized the other usual suspects on any tour group. I bought the book because someone told me about hearing Sharyn McCrumb describe how the book came to be after she had gone on a group tour. There was an obnoxious traveler in the group named Susan and everyone in the group started playing with the idea of how to get rid of her. When McCrumb told the group that she thought it would make a good story, the group insisted that she write it and use their real names. The only problem was how to tell Susan that she was the intended victim. However, like all self-absorbed people she assumed that the author had made up this terrible person and used her name. Whether that is a true story or not it is an interesting idea.

Every group has a Susan who drives everyone crazy and while not resorting to murder, the group would like to get rid of their Susan.

Summary: McCrumb succumbs to formula fiction.
Review: I guess commercial success is important to an author, but when Ms. McCrumb produces Missing Susan after such works as: The Hangman's Beautiful Daughter and The Rosewood Casket in my mind she becomes a writer, not an author. Missing Susan--formula fiction with a capital "F".

Summary: Good, fun, and with more substance than expected
Review: I love all of McCrumb's books but normally find the McPherson series entertaining but somewhat silly. Missing Susan had much substance then I had expected. Parts of it are pure Agatha Christie, the intended victim is some one that in a few pages you wouldn't mind killing yourself and the whole book is relatively bloodless. The bits about old true crimes were fascinating and I wouldn't mind reading a whole book devoted solely to those. I'm still wondering what happened to poor Constance Kent. A fun, enjoyable book and a mini historic crime lesson as well.

Summary: Hilariously fun!
Review: I thoroughly enjoyed this Sharyn McCrumb book. I've read about 10 of her books and I must say that "Missing Susan" is my favorite. It has a tongue and cheek quality and Sharyn McCrumb has a knack for making the unfortunate victim in the story totally unlikable. I also found the British Mystery Tour angle very informative and entertaining. If you like Agatha Christie you will like this book. "Paying the Piper" is also very good, as well as, "McPherson's Lament".

Summary: The funniest MacPherson book of all!
Review: I went on a tremendous reading spree in the last month and had to read all of Sharyn McCrumb's Elizabeth MacPherson books. After reading all of these amusing mysteries, I have to say that Missing Susan was the funniest. While some mysteries have the person dying in the first chapter and you spend the whole book trying to guess who the murderer is, Missing Susan is the absolute opposite.

...

This book has so many amusing scenes, particularly when the tour participants are participating at one of those mystery house weekends or the fact that the tour participants are more interested in shopping than seeing the historic sites. I highly recommend all of the other Elizabeth MacPherson books, but this is definitely the most amusing.
