Review: One of the most engaging aspects of M.J. Rose's writing is that she gives the reader an "insider's look" into a possibly unfamiliar venue. "Flesh tones" is set in the art world, and both the process of painting and the business end were depicted in an interesting and convincing way. The characters were attractive and made you care about them.

Review: The latest passionate thriller from M.J. Rose continues in the vein of her previous success, "In Fidelity." Rose's narrative richly develops the family relationship of Genny Haviland and her art dealer parents, delves into the steamy, seemingly "wrong for each other" romance of Genny and bad-boy painter Slade Gabriel, evokes the go-go art scene of New York City in the 70s and 80s, and effortlessly weaves a courtroom drama throughout. A perfect summer novel!

Summary: Sexy Work of Art
Review: The surface story is interesting, the legal questions, the descriptions, the sex scenes. But the suspense is in the unraveling of character. There is certainly sex here but this is also a mind piece centering on the dichotomy between the pleasures of passion in the Now and the timeless contempation of those pleasures in Art.The lurid book cover mirrors the smart and sexy content. The title is accurate and drawn in a sensuous font, the s curve being particularly suggestive. Only certain parts of the flesh ever get that color. A fittingly sultry picture of the author is on the back flap. Someone knew what they were doing. Easy to read type, easy to open, and artsy and sexy all at once. This was my first book by this author, and I'm glad to see that she has written others. I hope they're all as fine as this one.

Summary: ABSOLUTELY GREAT
Review: This book is extraordinary. I was utterly absorbed. It offers love and death, sex and mystery, friendship and family, art, obsession, romance, growth, realizations. I loved it. The blurbs on the cover say how "sexy" and "erotic" the book is. That's true but I wouldn't have focused on those aspects, as there were so many other things that knocked me out. The characters, the sheer beauty of the language.... The sexual encounters are so central to the events and motivations, so necessary and so seamlessly integrated, that the scenes simply came across to me as wholly human. Also, the legal parts are superb. (As a lawyer, I find many portrayals of trials ridiculously amusing or annoying. Sometimes it's all so hackneyed I can't enjoy the good parts of the book. But here, the novelist is dead on target.) This is the kind of book you hand to a friend and say, "You've GOT to read this!"

Review: This courtroom drama drew me in quickly. Rose examines love and obsession, focusing on romantic, passionate unions as well as familial, parent-child relationships, and she does it all within a tight and gripping plot. A perfect summer read and a step above the average beach book.

Rose takes you into the rarified world of Genny Haviland, daughter of a major N.Y. art dealer and lover of one of her father's most talented artists, whom she is accused of killing. The plot line will hook you, but the real mystery is the woman Genny, and how she came to be where she is. Rose skillfully explores the dark places where love, devotion, and obsession meet.

Review: This is the sort of book that you can read in one sitting -- provided you don't mind missing a deadline or a little sleep. It's compelling reading, focusing on issues that are big enough to draw you in, and characters fascinating enough to keep you turning the pages. When I read the last page, I immediately thought of a dozen other people I know who would enjoy this -- people who ranged from art afficionados to people who just love a good, well written book. FLESH TONES is already "burning up the beaches" we're told by Cosmopolitan Magazine, but I have a feeling this book will be here to stay, long after summer has gone.

Review: This latest novel by M.J. Rose is even better than her first two - Flesh Tones is a well-written, sexy & riveting blend of suspense, romance, art, and psychological obsession. I tore through it in about a day and a half (staying up way too late!), and am recommending it to all my friends as a fabulous book to read - with the warning that this page-turner will be very difficult to put down!
