Rating: Summary: what happened to the American Pyscho? Review: BBEllis was one of my favorites until Glamorama. I had ordered the book 2 months before it came out and I'm still struggling to finish it. I believe the problem lies with Ellis not even bothering to help the reader enter his own bizarre train of thought. Weak plot and not a page turner, and too many open ends which leave quesiton marks: whatever was Ellis trying to say about Victor getting chills all the time. Well I'm dissapointed but if anyone would like to present a counter argument I'd be most happy to read what I've missed out.Sam Ahmed
Rating: Summary: Dazed and confused Review: What is happening in this book? I've rarely been so infuriated by a novel, while finding myself unable to put it down. Some of the writing is out of this world and the first section in Manhattan is a satirical joy, peopled with totally objectional characters and describing an unbelievably shallow world of fashion models and jet-setters. However, when the action shifts to Europe and starts getting nasty, things start seeming all too contrived. Maybe the author is just much more at home in Manhattan. The violence is absolutely sickening at times in the latter sections and the plotting becomes incoherent and hard to follow. By the way, BEE should have hired someone to check on his Paris geography - most of it is spot on but a there are a few howlers in there. All in all, a dazing and confusing book with moments of perfection and others of total abjection.
Rating: Summary: This was the most incoherent piece of trash that I have ever Review: I bought the book because I saw three people on an airplane reading it -- too much of a coincidence? No, we were all headed to the Cannes Film Festival. This book is totally unfollowable, incoherent and disgusting. Not just the violence, but the sex. I have read a lot and I am not by any means a prude, but this was too much for me. I usually pass my books along to others, but this went where it belongs. Shame on the publisher.
Rating: Summary: Ellis... what happend? Review: Ellis... or to the reader of this novel. What happend. I mean, rules of attraction is a great novel. Something that should be read senior year of high school... it helped me a little. Either way, I was expecting mountains, and what I recieved where specks in this novel. Ellis, if you stopped doing drugs, DO THEM AGAIN, if you are into them too heavily right now, stop.. do something, this book is incoherent. Ellis is trying toshow that in this world (glam-model world) there is no difference between on screen and off... one is always acting. Also that one can lose himself in the bull s***... but this is all bull s***, this novel is all about brand names and designers. It sound like a running ad, and the plot is extrememly weak. Sorry, but tis is dismal... go back to writing about college life and drugs, this is your niche, and write a good novel... I will give you one more chance, but if you are considering reading this... don't.
Rating: Summary: Sick Review: Sick is the only word i can come up with if i`m asked to make a on-line summary of this book. The book is sick , he is sick (both the caracter in the book and the person who wrote this book Mr.Ellis , and perhaps the person he or she who buys this book. The only great thing about this book is the end wich are very simmilar to American Physco. DONT BUY THIS BOOK
Rating: Summary: Some like it, some hate it, but .... Review: I finished the book a couple of days ago. I must admit that it didn't keep me as engrossed as his other books however it will probably stick in my mind for a long time to come. I think that people become frustrated by novels that never lend conclusion, however look at all of BEE's others.. None really have. I also thought that it was an amazing change for the author. Sure there are similarities in what he is writing about (his descriptions of the rich & famous, Camden, the characters etc.) but I found it took me on a different ride. I guess one of the amazing things that will keep me thinking about Glamorama is all those unanswered questions, the smell of sh*t, the gap, the icy temperatures, was there two Victors, was there two lives ???. Will we ever know... I'm sure not, but we all will continue to ask. Oh and if anyone does find out... email me !
Rating: Summary: A little more than zero. Review: I' m not fun of Ellis but I have read his previous books without wanting to drop them in the middle. This was not the case and if I had not hoped for a miraculously interesting end, I would leave it half-read. The surreal situations in Victor's life confused me immensely and in the end I felt totally lost. I don't know if the whole point was to leave the reader like this, but either way I didn't like it. As for the description of the life-style of all these "glamorous" people, I don't know if its accurate, because in my country the situation is very much different, even in these circles, but from what I know, I believe Ellis has managed to describe it very well. Finally, although it's a little uncofortable to talk for someone you don't really know (even though you read his books,) I found extremely to the point the remark of one of your readers, who said that he wouldn't want to be in the same room with the reader!
Rating: Summary: Camera crews and confetti : frustrating but cool Review: I have to admit I didn't finish the book yet. I visited this site, desperately looking for an explanation of the camera crew, the dopple ganger and the confetti stuff. Unfortunatley, nobody really seems to understand. Reading the novel, it really p***ed me off. I was just totally submerging myself in the Glamorama world, picturing every detail, when BEE ruined everything and started writing about stuff that just couldn't be real. I was frustrated because I couldn't figure out what was the meaning of this crap. But I had hogh hopes, as I had still 250 pages to go. Maybe it would be explained later? Like BEE got to us all, because he surely affected us with it. He is the author, he can -of course- do anything he likes. Now I think it is a sign of BEE's bizarre fantasy, surreal but in a way appropiately chosen. In this case more subtile though than the horrific bizarre fantasies, on which everybody always emphasizes. I hope there IS a plot/end anyway, as some of you promised. PLease!
Rating: Summary: Great , but sometimes boring . Review: This book is great , but it doesnt match american phsyco. It has a great start , but the end is boring. You will not read a more phsyco book in your lifetime , so read it now or never.
Rating: Summary: Ellis achieves surprising success Review: It is an unusual book in that if you don't read it right now, and I mean this month, or at least in the next three months, it is going to seem dated. It is a risky book to write and I'm not sure how he pulled it off, given the cycle time in book writing and publishing. Also it is highly entertaining.
