Rating: Summary: Isle of Dogs is a dog of a read! Review: This book strays quite far from the normal strengths of a Patricia Cornwell mystery - strong plot, well developed characters, and a compelling mystery. It is almost as if Cornwell used a ghost writer on this book. Plot developement is weak, the characters are humorously drawn but completely lack in credibility as real people, and the story lacks specific character focus and development. At one point, she even has crabs and a trout talking to each other. I suggest skipping this particular title.
Rating: Summary: Are zero stars an option? Review: I was disappointed with this latest book. The "humor" did not come through and neither did any of the other things we expect from a Cornwell novel. The whole time I was reading it, I felt like it was a filler to keep us happy until the next Scarpetta novel. Unfortunately, it left me feeling bloated, much like the way Marino feels after eating a heavy tasteless meal. Could you please pass the antacid?
Rating: Summary: Too bad to finish Review: I am a diehard Patricia Cornwell fan, but I couldn't finish this book! It is peopled by cartoons and caricatures rather than actual characters. If you love the Kay Scarpetta series, you will be very disappointed in this. I'd give it a zero star rating.
Rating: Summary: Carl Hiaasen she ain't!! Review: I'm a lover of both Cornwall and Hiaasen and this isn't book isn't even close to either!! I'm in the middle and don't know if I can forge through to the end. Hiaasen has kooky characters and plots, but at least they're quasi believable and funny. This is just plain sad! Even the Kay Scarpetta Christmas cooking book was better than this!!! Please, let's get back to basics.
Rating: Summary: Cornwell's writing goes to the Dogs Review: It is such a shame to have to give Patricia Cornwell a bad review! It can't be helped. This book has to be her idea of a joke. Not only is the plot and the characters silly, but her writting style is completely patronizing. I have a good idea that the residents of that part of the country did not appreciate the representation Patricia gave them. I was most surprised!! Normally I anxiously await her books and am an avid fan. I felt so betrayed by her lack of effort and hope she can get over whatever ailed her when she wrote "Isle of the Dogs"
Rating: Summary: Apologize to Carl Hiaasen Review: to even compare this book to Carl Hiaasen is borderline blasphemy. The arrogance with which this book is written makes me think that Ms. Cornwell is only trying to impress us with her knowledge of mundane details. And Trooper Truth? what's that about - to my mind it had little to do with the plot at all - assuming there is a plot in there somewhere. Glad I checked it out of the library
Rating: Summary: Love it! Review: Come on, People...this is a funny, funny book. What's wrong with Blue Crabs having intelligent conversations? And computer literate dogs? Life would be pretty boring without a little whimsy now and then. Sometimes I worry about Ms. Cornwell delving into such dark areas with Kay Scarpetta. Glad to know she's got a touch of the crazies like me. Let yourself go and laugh right out loud with Isle of DoGs.
Rating: Summary: Don't Buy!!! Review: Oh, I wish I had read the reviews for this book before I bought it. I've made myself read half of the book hoping it would get better and then decided to look at the reviews to see if I should stick through to the end. I too think she must have had to come up with a book in a hurry - or else she is suffering from a brain tumor. The Trooper Truth stuff is so lightweight and there is an endless list of details that she doesn't even begin to bother making fit. Very sloppy, BORING, insulting, mindless, etc. It's hard to believe that Patricia Cornwell actually wrote this herself - compared to her last few books which were so brilliant - it's stunning to see such a mess that this book is. I will be very careful before buying another of her books again.
Rating: Summary: Isle of Dogs Review: Possibly the worst book I have ever forced myself to read. I kept thinking, all the laborious way through, that it would get better. It has no redeeming qualities. It is inane. And that Trooper Troup! If I had wanted history, I would have bought history. Ms. Cornwell should stick to forensic science and never again attempt humor. Am I the only reader who couldn't find any reason for any of the zillion plots? Please place negative figures for future reviews. I didn't want to give this book the one star that I gave it.
Rating: Summary: As a Cornwell fan----VERY DISAPPOINTING Review: Having read every book written by Ms. Cornwell, this was the absolute worst! "Southern Cross" was a bad start for the introduction of these characters, but "Isle of Dogs" is ten times worse. I've already given the book away and am not sure if I would pay for the next book she comes out with.
