Summary: This is NOT Carl Hiaasen!!!!!!!
Review: This is the first Patricia CORNBALL novel and it really is! This governor is an insult to the most remarkable politician of our time, "Skank".

Summary: disappointed doesn't begin to sum it up
Review: Please, please don't waste your time on this poor offering but wait (hopefully) for Dr. Kay to reappear. This silly, stilted, "comedy" based on some hurtful stereotypes and crazy dialogue is not worthy of Cornwell. I dragged myself through it and wish I hadn't.

Summary: Carl Hiassen she ain't
Review: First of all, I'm NOT assailing her for varying from her Scarpetta series. I've only started reading her, so I'm not one of those who is upset that she veered from her formula.

It's just that she's not funny. Her extremely detailed way of describing things, which may work great with forensic details, totally kills any potential humor. It's like she's saying, "Here's a situation. It's funny. Let me explain why it's funny..." It's overkill, and shows a complete lack of understanding of the timing required for effective humor writing. The characters are not even wooden - they're styrofoam. And the Trooper essays are just bizarre - she's either showing off her trivia knowledge or using this as a platform for some unusual prejudices. Whatever they are, they don't work.

She simply can't compete with the Carl Hiassen/Dave Barry/Elmore Leonard school of humor mixed with action and suspense.

I guess she should stick to being the Female Joe Friday: Just the facts, ma'am.

Summary: Was this really written by Patricia Cornwell?????
Review: Patricia Cornwell fans automatically buy any book with her name on it. We have come to expect a certain level of quality in her writing. We just assume that we are going to like her new novels based on our past experience. Isle of Dogs, on the other hand, was one of the most ridiculous books I have ever read. I am extremely disappointed that I spent a lot of money on this book. I live over seas and had to pay for the book and then wait for my mother to ship it to the Middle East and then I end up with this? I can't believe it. I will never be able to trust the name Patricia Cornwell again. It is hard to find reviews here ...but next time I will look closer before I fall for the trap of such incredulous nonsense again!

Summary: Bring back Kay Scarpetta.....
Review: I have read all of Cornwell's Dr Kay Scarpetta novels and also the two other beakaway books (Southern Cross and Hornets Nest) and have to say that I was terribly disappointed in Isle of Dogs. If it were by any other author I would never have bothered finishing it but I kept hoping that some of the brilliant crime writing that I've grown to love from Cornwell would suddenly appear...not so.
The essays on Trooper Truth's website had me scratching my head wondering what on earth they had to do with the storyline. The talking crabs left me dumbfounded. And the almost total lack of mystery and serious crime writing made me decide once and for all that I would only read Cornwell's Scarpetta novels, no more Judy Hammer and Andy Brazil for me.
The one bright moment when Dr Scarpetta was brought into the story was soon extinguished as she lasted less than a chapter before Fonny Boy and his backwards talking started again.
If you are a fan of Patricia Cornwell's Dr Kay Scarpetta series then I would not recommend this book. But if you are after a light comedy and don't mind the lack of gripping forensic science that has made Cornwell famous then this book is for you.

Summary: Refreshingly witty
Review: I guess I'm in the minority, but I really enjoyed reading this book. I found it a delightful suprise and so unlike the usual Patricia Cornwall book, which just goes to show that a good writer can change her genre successfully. I can understand that if you are in the mood for a typical Cornwall book that you might be disappointed, but approach it in a more lighthearted way, and you might just enjoy it as much as I did! After all, her books were beginning to get very very dark, and I was really afraid to read the next one in case another main character bit the dust...so to speak. This was a great read and I recommend it.

Summary: what a bummer
Review: I am glad I'm not the only one who thought this effort tanked! Ms. Cornwell, please, go back to what you do best. This book was just plain stupid.

Summary: Isle of Dogs is for the Dogs!
Review: This is the worst book by Cornwell. I can't even see what her purpose was, given she has us accostumed to her excellent books. A true disappointment!

Summary: couldn't make it to Disc 2
Review: Over the past couple years I've enjoyed audio recordings of both the Kay Scarpetta and Judy Hammer series, while painting, gardening, etc. Gruesome, but fun and full of marvelous little bits of information. I know this book is an attempt to change gears, but by the time I had reached the end of Disc 1, I couldn't take anymore. Has Cornwell lost it? Did someone else write it? Thank goodness it came from the library. . .

Summary: Not a recommended read
Review: I have read all of Patricia Cornwell works and this by far is the worst. She tried comedy but ineffective. The characters are caricatures.
