Summary: It's a real Dog
Review: I couldn't even finish this book it was so bad. Her attempt at humorous characterization was too over the top for me.

Summary: Suprised
Review: Southern Cross was a sad take off from Hornet's Nest. Isle of Dogs was a sadder take off from Southern Cross.

The comedy was out of character for Cornwell. I'd like to see more on Virginia West rather than any more of Andy Brazil.

Rating: 3 stars
Summary: Nothing to learn of this book
Review: You won't take anything out of this book, that is a fact, how to know if you are in the mood to read it? It is very simple, if you read 2 chapters and you didn't laugh at least 5 times don't read it because the jokes of the book will be as in those chapters, for example: in the state of Virginia, home of the FBI there is a governor who doesn't even see his nose. The governor wants to control the speed of the cars in an island that have four or five big cars and the rest of the people uses golf cars.
If this is not a joke for you, just don't read the book.

Summary: If I could give fewer than 1 star, I would
Review: I have been a fan of Patricia Cornwell from the very beginning, and have rarely been disappointed. Isle of Dogs, however, was a major let-down. When the main characters were introduced in Hornet's Nest, I found them flat and unappealing. That hasn't changed. Even worse, it seems the author couldn't decide what kind of book she was writing: mystery? comedy? Disney-esque animal story?

It's been a long time since I've failed to finish any book, and this is the first time I've given up on a Cornwell novel.

Summary: Incredibly Dumb
Review: If you liked the Kay Scarpetta books - you'll hate this. Dialogue is stunted, characters are like a bad comic book, but less interesting. I wish I had read the reviews before buying it. Seems insulting to Cornwell's fans to use characters from her other books to suck people into buying this one.

Summary: Do not buy
Review: This book is terrible. I did not even finish it. If you like her Kay S. series stay away from this book.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Unreadable
Review: I expected a "different" book - no Kay Scarpetta story - but I couldn't believe how terrible this book was. I very rarely am unable to finish a book, but I had to get rid of this one.

Summary: Jaw-droppingly awful
Review: Patricia Cornwell has never been a great writer, but you could at least count on her books for some up-to-date forensic technologies and law-enforcement technique. While I admire her for trying something different in Isle of Dogs, it is jaw-droppingly bad. Despite my normal compulsion to finish even lousy books out of a feeling that some value can still be squeezed from them, I'm quitting this one halfway.

Among the book's problems: her portrayal of an African-American helicopter pilot is a racist stereotype that features a laughable attempt at capturing black dialect; her "Governor Crimm" is a two-dimensional farce whose best-described feature is his monumentally gassy internal plumbing; her attempts at retelling history from a Southern perspective are unconvincing; and her efforts to be whacky and comical fall flat. Whoever compared this book to Carl Hiiasens' was snorting airplane glue. I didn't laugh once.

If I weren't morally opposed to burning books, I'd torch this one. Perhaps I can recycle the paper somehow. Donating this book to the library would be cruel.

Summary: What was Patricia thinking?
Review: Talking crabs and talking trout, need I say more. The book reveals only shallow descriptions of the characters and an overabundance of plot lines (i.e. the governor's wife and her trivets, the fraudulent dentist and his kidnapping, the bungling trooper who flies the govenor and family, the rambling essays of Trooper Truth, the kidnapping of Popeye the dog, oh, and then the actual crime storyline). As if to further confuse and put-off the reader she adds backward talking islanders who are portrayed to have the brains of 5th graders. I began reading this book with an open mind and perused eagerly through the first Trooper Truth essay excited to see where his "from left field" comments were headed, but was disappointed to find out that the essays lead nowhere. I can say that I finished the book, but it was a chore and I will think twice before buying her next book even though I have devoured all of her previous novels.

Summary: What WERE you thinking?
Review: What a disappointment! Corny, unimaginative, and boring are too kind of words to describe this book from one of my favorite authors! (Next time, I'll read Amazon reviews BEFORE I purchase the book). While reading I could not rid my brain of scenes from Rocky Raccoon cartoons! Of course, it's a best seller: We were all expecting the 'usual' great mystery from Ms. Cornwell. I guess the joke's on us.
