Rating: Summary: An entertaining tale of naval aviators Review: "Check Six!", the novel by Bob Norris, takes the reader into the world of a U.S. Navy aircraft carrier. A note about the author inside the back cover states that Norris is a commander in the U.S. Navy and a veteran combat pilot. This story is told from the perspective of Jack Warner, "a journalist specializing in military affairs" who has reported on the notorious Tailhook scandal and its aftermath.
Warner lands a choice assignment: he is to cover the integration of two female pilots into a Hornet fighter squadron on board the U.S.S. _Ranger_. But early in the novel Jack is tipped off that the women may face a sexist conspiracy to keep them from achieving their mission.
"Check Six!" is an exciting, swiftly moving narrative that is really enjoyable to read. Yes, some characters and situations struck me as a bit corny or contrived, but overall it's an effective tale. Norris has taken the topics of women in the military and the relationship between the press and the military and integrated them into a solid action/suspense story.
Norris also offers the reader a colorful and well-detailed taste of life on board a naval vessel. Although I never served on a carrier, in my own naval career I spent some quality time on board a frigate at sea, and I can testify that at key points Norris' writing has an authentic salty sea taste.
Rating: Summary: Excellent Review: "CHECK SIX" is a fine first effort. Bob Norris has a very good grasp of the subject that he is writing about as he should being a pilot, while being a bit rough in spots it is never the less a good job of writing. He makes you feel that you are sitting in the seat of an F-18, soaring throught the skies and feeling the G-forces while trying to get an oppontent off of your "six".I give this book a high score and will be eagerly waiting for more work from this author.
Rating: Summary: Takes off like a cat-shot and end like a 3-wire trap! Review: A very plausible and timely story in a very readable book! I really liked the story line and the characters. The way the reporter handled himself and related to the naval personell was great. I would have liked more combat action but the flying sequences were excellent! I really felt I was in the cockpit! I really, really, really, hope that this was the beginning of a series!
Rating: Summary: So exciting I could barely put it down Review: After more than fifteen years of working with Naval Officers I finally felt like I've been on board a ship. Bob Norris describes ship life so well you can almost smell the salt air and hear the roar of the engines. The plot is tightly woven with believable characters to love and to hate. The book is so exciting I could barely put it down.
Rating: Summary: "Full Throttle, Head On, Mach 3 Action and Suspence." Review: After reading "Check Six" I'm pumpped for flight, and action. One of the best aviation novels I've ever read. Norris takes you into the cockpit, and off the carrier deck like and "ACE". Technical Acuracy is unlike anyother. From the Ward Room to the Flight Deck, Norris sends you on the ride of your life.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Review: Amazingly good read. I thought I was just buying something to keep me busy on the airplane. This is NOT a book to read yourself to sleep. You'll be up all night and then spend your time waiting for the sequel.
Rating: Summary: Brilliant New Author Review: Beautifully written, fast paced with wonderful characterizations, smooth flowing plot, heart pounding suspense, and details that educate and excite. One felt part of the action and could hear the fury and noise and suspense. I am waiting anxiously for his next book.
Rating: Summary: The most original concept I have read in years...BRAVO! Review: Bob Norris is definitely one of the elite military-techno novelist. The only complaint I have is that he hasn't written more books. Bob, please don't stop writing!
Rating: Summary: The adrenal rush of gut-wrenching flights Review: Bob Norris' book, Check Six!, made it seem like I was right there in the midst of the action. His descriptions of both the stress and the excitement of flying the Hornet were very real. I felt the letdown from the adrenal rush of both Amy and Randi's gut-wrenching flights. Plus there was great despair over the tragedies of both Amy and Santana. I was glued to this book from beginning to end, and certainly enjoyed the ride. At the end I couldn't help but think that I really want to read more from this author. Whew!
Rating: Summary: Check-mate Review: Bob Norris, what a revelation. Check Six is a hyper read, if you enjoy a techno-thriller with a solid story line and characters with depth then with is your next read. From the start of the prologue to the very last page (which comes to soon!) you will be totally immersed in the confinement of Aircraft Carrier life. The Libyan situation is almost immaterial as the story line focuses on the survival of the Navy's first female Hornet pilots. My only misgiving regarding this novel is that I wasn't content with knowing that justice might be served - I wanted to see those @#*@#!* pay for what they did!
