Rating: Summary: winter of the wolf moon Review: Having just finished A Cold Day In Paradise, I was anxious to see if Hamilton could equal the quality of his first effort. Happily, his second book is even better! His ability to evoke the stark atmosphere uf the UP and the power of his narration have both improved and intensified to a marked degree. If he keeps this up, he will become one of our premiere writers of mystery fiction.
Rating: Summary: Boring Review: I like the Alex McKnight character, but the plot is too slow in developing. I just started skipping whole pages.
Rating: Summary: good book review c,f (7) Review: I liked thiis book because it has some action and it is a mystery. The book was never really boring to me, it always made me wonder what was going to happen next. When all the action finally started the book got even better. Usually I do not like to read but this book is something I didnt mind reading. Another thing I liked was how the author wrote this book in first person from the main characters point of view. The main character of this story, (Alex) seemed to be really cool and very strong. acting as if he would never give up made him appear even more strong mentally. Physicaly he proved he was strong after being pulled behind a snowmobile and thrown into a tree and survived . mostly, I liked this book becase it was a mystery that had guns, drugs, and somewhat a small gang. This is a really good book and I highly recomend it.
Rating: Summary: This guy loves the cold! Review: I now have read all 3 of Steve Hamilton's books. This one will give you the chills - really! He has created a character in Alex McKnight that you just want to take care of! He is so needy and you root for him the entire book. The weather descriptions of the Soo and its surroundings make you feel you are there! Alex goes thru a lot of trauma and you keep waiting for his personal bullet to explode! Since you will not be able to put the book down and it's a quick read, it is well worth the time spent reading all these books. Just keep a warm blanket handy!
Rating: Summary: dissappointing after all the positive reviews Review: I read several of the reviews about the various books in this series, and thought I'd love them, entertaining genre. I found a great technical writer, but a hero who is egocentric, arrogant, a bully, and the antithesis of the kind of central character I like to identify with. But, then perhaps I read these stories with a different mindset -- I like to identify with the hero, and this is one that I want no part of. Talk about "real friends", the way the author makes this obnoxious character's friends stick by him in spite of abuse and mistreatment gives new meaning to that concept. No more of this series in my collection, thank you.
Rating: Summary: Outstanding Once Again ! Review: If you had the good fortune to read Steve Hamilton's Edgar Award Winning first book, "A Cold Day in Paradise", then you will certainly want to get this one. The very likeable character of Alex McKnight returns, and once again Steve Hamilton will hook you from the first few pages and keep you there until the very end. If you are looking for a new author with a fresh approach to the mystery genre, then Steve Hamilton will not dissapoint you. The characters, story line, and description of the settings are outstanding.
Rating: Summary: Good solid mystery. Review: It all starts out with Alex McKnight playing goalie in the over-30 hockey league where he runs into hotshot player Lonnie Bruckman. Bruckman is bad news and when McKnight agrees to shelter Bruckman's ex-girlfriend, McKnight agrees. But the girl goes missing and McKnight goes looking for Bruckman.Very good plot. There are twists and turns as Alex McKnight hunts for the missing girl. Just when it looks like he has a handle on what happened something new occurs that throws his whole theory out the window. McKnight is a good solid character but so are the other people that inhabit McKnight's world. A good solid mystery that you won't be disappointed with.
Rating: Summary: ...from the Chippewa on down... Review: It is 3 months after "A Cold Day in Paradise," (see my review entitled "The Legend Lives On...,") in the deep and dead of the UP (Michigan's Upper Peninsula) winter. Author Steve Hamilton's clear, crisp writing expertly evokes the winter temperatures up here - especially in the night walk from the ice fishing shack. This is even better than his award-winning debut novel, continuing the development of our imperfect hero's friends and cronies (think a more chronologically and ethnically diverse "Grumpy Old Men.")
Rating: Summary: brrrrrrrrrrrr Review: Maybe it was that I read this in the early months of the year in Michigan, but I really did feel the cold throughout this book. Wonderfully descriptive of Michigan in the winter. I was caught off guard by the ending, and I'm not totally sure that I liked it ending how it did, but overall this was a fantastic book. I can't comment of the unbelievable "scenes" too much like others have on here. I like Stephen King, so I don't really care if things are really believable. This IS supposed to be entertainment, ya know.
