Rating: Summary: Thank you, but no thank you Review: I'm sorry to agree with most reviewers. This is a very 'cheap' novel. Had it to be finished in a week? I also must conclude that mister Clancy (or ....?) doesn't understand one thing about Europeans. No one in Europe behaves like his characters. Several of his story lines, like the part with a wheelchair in the woods are simply nonsens. Ask anyone in a wheelchair! Mr.Clancy if you choose to use foreign words in your books, better check the spelling and grammar!
Rating: Summary: Prolific Doesn't Equal Good Review: So my mind started wandering midway through Sum of All Fears and it hasn't come back to Tom Clancy since. I started Op-Center mainly because it was a short book and I figured I could ease my way back into Clancy's little world. My mistake. The book is nearly unreadable and appears to be an attempt to just get another book out there. I was genuinely stunned at the quality of the first four books (Red Storm, Red October, Patriot Games, Clear and Present), but enough already. We all know you wish you were Jack Ryan, but you're not. Every time I see a Tom Clancy book I see puffy Tom with his shaded prescription glasses, the wannabe flight jacket and his dead serious accountant's face. I guess it doesn't help that when I met him at a book signing he could barely be bothered to lift his eyes to the customers. He's laughing all the way to the bank, and it's my fault - I bought the books. No more.
Rating: Summary: I felt that the novel was lacking a strong plot. Review: "Op-Center" Imagine a group of psycho neo-Nazis trying to take over the world through the use of computers. This idea to me is a little far fetched even for Clancy. This novel was not one of Tom Clancy's best even though it got top billing. It was too much of a stretch from reality. Granted the idea used in the novel could possibly happen, there is just no way it could happen this way. The plot of this novel was not strong enough for me and I felt that the outcome was too predictable. The story starts out in America. This is were the idea of neo Nazism comes into effect through insignificant occurrences, that normally would have been over looked, which the main characters thought were important facts. The scene then travels to different parts of Germany and the plot develops to easily with every event tying into another much to early in the story which gave away the ending. The story then shifts to France for the conclusion. These changes of location was a major downfall because the reader had to decide were the story is taking place otherwise it did not make sense. The underlying problem throughout the whole novel was that in the story there were two or three groups of characters dealing with different situations simultaneously and the way that the reader can tell which group is being portrayed is from different sub-headings that state the location and the time of where it is taking place. This was aggravating because it never made sense to the reader because you would be reading about one group in a chapter then the next chapter it would switch to a different setting and group of characters. The central focus of the story is that each member of the Op-Center has some sort of personnel vendetta against the neo-Nazi groups. As stated by one of the characters "My demon is still out there." This was the positive part of the story. It gave a realistic tendency as if the characters are truly struggling against the decisions that they had to make. This idea in the story is the only realistic part of the whole book because many people do feel as the characters did against the idea of Nazism. The means on how they try to solve this problem is the unrealistic part. Overall I would not suggest this to a person who is a serious reader but to a person who does not care if the plot of the book is that well organized I give it two stars. Chris Jamison
Rating: Summary: I CANT FIND ANY CHAPTER SUMMARIES!!! Review: If I would kindly put some chapter summaries on the internet, I wouldnt have to read my damn books!!
Rating: Summary: Why so much hatred? Review: I used to be a Tom Clancy fan. I read nearly all his books prior to "Games of State". I particularly liked "Patriot Games" for example, that I read 3 or 4 times. I said "used to be", for it is difficult to be a Frenchman and remain a Tom Clancy fan after reading "Games of State". Apart from the fact that, to add some local color, he makes a grotesque mess of the french language,(but this would not be that important for english-speaking readers) he has all the characters , the "good ones" as well as the "bad ones", express such hatred and contempt for France, its people and its institutions, that I couldn't help thinking it was the author's own view that was being expressed. So I am just wondering: what did we ever do to Mr Clancy to deserve such punishment?
Rating: Summary: Great plot but poor detail management Review: Clancy, or whomever the author is, does a poor job of assigning Korean names for the book's characters! There are those whose last name is actually a Korean first name! There are those whose names are a combination of two Korean last names. For example, there is a character named Kim Lee. How many Korean men go by the first name "Kim"? This books casts a serious doubt on Clancy's reputation for superb detail management, if he is indeed the author. As a Korean-American fan of Clancy's works, I found this book to be a serious disappointment. (Review based on English version of the book.)
Rating: Summary: This was a really good book. Review: Another great thriller from the Op-Center seris. The proper dosage of action and intrige keeps the reader going page after page after page.
Rating: Summary: Weak effort-- why so many books? Review: I'm not sure I understand why Tom Clancy feels the need to put his name on so many books, computer games, tv shows, etc. There is no doubt there has been a decline in quality since his early books-- this is a clear example. I did as a reviewer below suggested and tried Bob Mayer's special forces series and found the books I could get enjoyable but wonder why I can't get all six.
Rating: Summary: Much better than the first Op Center Review: I thought that Op Center: Mirror Image was much better than the first Op Center. I like the Striker Team a lot, and was very happy to see so much book time with them.
Rating: Summary: A thrilling adventure about war games. Review: If you like thrilling adventures, "Op-Center" is the book for you. It is an exciting, realistic adventure. Paul Hood is the director of Op-Center, Americas crisis management team. However, nothing can prepare him for what is about to happen. A huge explosion in South Korea kills many world leaders and threatens to start World War 3. Paul Hood and his team must find the terrorists before more disaster strikes. Soon they discover a large amount of poison gas has been stolen and the terrorist group is about to wreak havoc again. America sends out a team, and the chase is on. When Paul and his team catch up with the terrorists they are threatening to strike with missiles. Can they be stopped at the last minute? "Op-Center is action packed and exciting to the last page. The characters in this book were great. All were described in great detail and I could picture the look on everyones face. "The normaly passive cherubic face of Matt Stoll was pale as an unripe peach, with Kewpie doll smears of red on his cheeks." It seemed that the people were real because every aspect of their lives were explained. Despite great characters and a great story, at times the book was hard to follow. Each chapter switched settings. The book was told from many different places and it had to be moved around. this made it hard to understand exactly what was going on at different places. Once I got familiar with the times and places, it was easy to understand, however. It also switched to different time zones so it made it hard to understand how quickly things were happening. Tom Clancy did a great job writing this book. He made it a real exciting thriller. if You like war game types of books, you will love this one.
