Rating: Summary: Good Story----Lousy Details Review: This was a good story, but obviously not written by Clancy. I'm surprised he let his name get put on the cover. The details concerning the characters and some of the events destroy the whole fabric of the story. For example, most of the enlisted personnel in the story are cited as being "Privates". In real life, guys with those kinds of knowledge and skills would be senior NCO's. This applies to both the North and South Korean forces and the the US military. Also the team leader would not be a 25-year old Lt. Col. Maybe a 35-year old, but not 25. The author also shows his general lack of knowledge of things military by indiscriminately labeling all military forces the Army. The Army does not operate C-9A Nightengale or C-141 aircraft. The author's lack of knowledge of his characters took the edge off the whole story.
Rating: Summary: Have found a spelling error Review: I have enjoyed Tom Clancy's books from Rainbow Six, The Sum of All Fears and now am reading the Op-Center Mirror Image. I was alarmed to find a typo. On page 254, towards the middle bottom of page, Orlov asekd. Should be asked, but of course I don't speak Russian.
Rating: Summary: Good Clancy Yarn! Review: Good plot! Typical Clancy. I liked the indepth look at the characters, especially the way he portrayed Paul Hood's first love paranoia over Nancy. There were some parts that I just didn't know the meaning for them being there. Like the part where the FBI raided the New York house, what was the point of that, why was it there? And a guy in a wheelchair with a terrified girl, fighting an army of neo-Nazis. Come on!
Rating: Summary: Op-Center: A Masterpiece Review: Upon reading Tom Clancy's Op-Center, I found myself completely satisfied. This is quite a strange occurrence provided that I've never been a fan of ANY book. However, Op-Center has the perfect elements of a very good book. It's no wonder that it won the prize for #1 New York Times Bestseller. But why is Op-Center such a good book? Upon reading this book, you realize that the book itself is no better a story than any other; however, it is the method of approach that Clancy uses towards the readers that catches the attention. People who read many novels probably know by now that most of them have monotonous story-lines that over-exaggerate a universal theme presented throughout the book. However, Clancy stays away from this approach. Instead of a constant building up which leads to the conclusion, Clancy lets the reader drop away at certain points. It is almost as though he deliberately makes the reader lose attention. Then, as the reader begins to feel as though they are losing the story, Clancy steps in and starts rebuilding the conflict. This let's the reader decide what he 'missed', and makes the story more interesting. This overall "phenomenon" can be related to a roller-coaster. First, imagine a roller-coaster that consists of one huge, long drop. Sure, it's fun at first; but soon, it would get boring... no turns, no breaks in action, nothing. It's easy to create a roller-coaster of that type, and that type of roller-coaster can be used to symbolize all those simple novels out there. But there is a reason why good roller-coasters are so much better than others. Sure, there is the fact that they are fast, but the more important reason is that they have variation. Good roller-coasters vary in action. They may start with a steep drop, then go to a huge loop, then go for a wild corkscrew, etc. In summary, contrary to popular belief, straight-forward, nonstop action is gets quite boring after some time, and variation is the key to reviving this. Is this, then, the only reason why Op-Center is such a good book? Of course not. Clancy also utilizes the ability to keep knowledge levels neutral. Often times, one may read books in which the author obviously knows nothing about his topic. He may use terms incorrectly, or use wrong terms in the first place. One way or another, this destroys the book's whole meaning. Then there are those authors who know a little too much about the topic. He may bombard the reader with too many strange new terms and uses of words. This also kills the meaning of the book, since readers won't understand to begin with. However, in Op-Center, Clancy demonstrates a good understand of the material set forth, and yet provides easy understanding for the reader. Op-Center is filled with a lot of 'high-tech' words, but they are set forth in a way that the reader still understands them. Clancy is obviously not mumbling a bunch of gibberish, and if he is... he's very good at it. Through these major reasons, and other little tidbits, Tom Clancy creates the masterpiece known Op-Center. The end product is an easy-to-read, interest catching book that is suitable for most mature people. The involvement of real-world ideas also adds some realism to Clancy's novel, making it one that is a sure must-buy and must-read.
Rating: Summary: An exciting read Review: I read the whole book on a plane trip and it was sufficient for me to forget the coach seat, forgoe the in-flight movies and stick with it right until the exciting conclusion. I don't care whether Clancy wrote it or not, the writing is fine and I'd recommend this to anyone looking for a fun and exciting read.
Rating: Summary: James Bond meets Days of Our Lives Review: The first in a new series, I was surprised to find that this book appeared to actually be a sequel to the mini-series. A crisis in North/South Korea has Op-Centre proving its viability to the U.S. President and preventing a war, while its director is pre-occupied with his personal domestic crisis. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining, but I found the humanistic qualities distracting. Otherwise it would have been a gripping yarn.
Rating: Summary: LONG, DRAWN OUT AND PRETTY BORING Review: This book starts out looking like it is going to be great and action packed but the more you get into it the more it starts to become boring. This is not one of Clancy's best.
Rating: Summary: Acts of War Review: I thought the premise was great- Very realistic and entertaining. I am a big Clancy fan, and although I've seen some negative reviews on this novel, I thought it was well written. It kept my attention the whole way through and provided for some tense action and excitement. Good job Tom- keep up the great work!
Rating: Summary: pretty good Review: This book wasn't quite as good as some of Tom Clacy's other books but still had a good story line! It brings to thought actual things we se in our every day life making it very realistic. It as all of tom clancys books do drove me to whant to read more.Another thing about it is that it had interesting curves not many other books have making it even better. A Pretty Darn Good Book!
Rating: Summary: A Good Book By Clancy Review: I thought that this was a good book. It was enjoyable, exciting, and suspenseful. The book follows more than one story line but folds down to the same plot. Clancy puts a realism in the book to make you feel that the people and the situations are real. The ending is surprising and clever. This is a good book. Overall I would give it four and one-half stars.
