Rating: Summary: Aunt Dimity goes gothic Review: Any Aunt Dimity is a ghost story of course but this one is much more. Nancy Atherton has woven a perfect gothic plot. All the elements are present: forbidden stirrings, revenge, lost loves, war, death, mysterious stranger, a bad marriage, a fainting virgin and things that go bump in the night. The author leaves nothing out. I was hooked from the first few pages and couldn't put it down. As Lori falls under the thrall of the spirits of the house and the seduction of the mysterious stranger I found myself shouting, "Listen to your aunt! Don't do this!" I was completely involved in the tale. This plot is more action filled than some of her earlier Dimity novels. It ventures a bit away from the sweet English cozy adding a pinch of spice to the mix.I recommend this to all the fans of the series and new readers too.
Rating: Summary: This author writes a warm mystey that leaves us feeling good Review: Expatriate American Lori Shepherd leaves her Cotswold home to drive to Northumberland to evaluate the Wyrdhurst library rare book collection. However, instead of arriving safely at the Hall, a landslide caused by a torrential storm leads to an accident. Writer Adam Chase takes the unconscious Lori to his hovel. When Lori awakens, she feels an attraction to her rescuer that in turn makes her feel guilty since she just left her beloved spouse with their twin toddlers. Still, Lori goes about her business and begins to scrutinize the collection. Soon, Lori hears eerie laughter and finds a cache of love letters written by Claire Byrd and W.W.I vet Edward Cresswell, who died in combat. However, an apparent ghost and someone knocking out Adam disturb the serenity of her work. With hints of treasure hidden in the castle, Lori with the help of her spirited Aunt Dimity begins a different type of investigation that could prove dangerous to this amateur sleuth. On first glance, AUNT DIMITY BEATS THE DEVIL sounds inane, but talented Nancy Atherton turns the tale into an entertaining otherworldly cozy. The story line is simply fun to read due to the strong support cast enabling the lead couple (Lori and Aunt Dimity) to excel. The "dialogue" between Lori and Aunt Dimity is often humorous, but also retains a seriousness that embellishes the plot. Unlike many English cozies, AUNT DIMITY BEATS THE DEVIL contains plenty of action, but the novel as with the previous five books in this series belongs to its two stars. Harriet Klausner

Rating: Summary: Lots of fun Review: I don't often read mysteries (too grim & grisly!), but this one goes down like a hot fudge sundae. It's perfect for a long plane trip or rainy day when you want a book to provide cheerful, charming "company." I can't wait to read the rest of the series!
Rating: Summary: Lots of fun Review: I found Aunt Dimity quite by accident. Since the first book, I have read all but two, and I have those on order. Lori is such a likable protagonist, although Aunt Dimity steals the show. I actually read two in one day -- Almost like peanuts: these books are so engaging that one just wants to stay in the Aunt Dimity world as long as possible!

Rating: Summary: A little bit of everything here -- Review: I'd be willing to bet that each of us has an Aunt Dimity somewhere in our existence. Problem is, most of us haven't yet figured out how to communicate with her. We're not so fortunate as Lori Shepard, Dimity's niece. This is the sixth adventure of Dimity and her niece, and if you've not read at least the first one, AUNT DIMITY'S DEATH, you'll probably be at least a tad confused by the events in this book. Once you've read the first one, however, I think the other books may be read in any order you come to them. They're all positively delightful. Lori Shepard has, since the first book, acquired not only a husband and twin toddlers, but also a home in England. However, she still works infrequently for her former employer, the American Stan Finderman. Lori's specialty is old books, and evaluating them, and as a rule, it's great fun to tag along with her as she lovingly investigates various collections. This time, though, she may have made an un-wise decision, as the collection is in an old (not ancient) neo-Gothic castle--Wyrdhurst--in Northumberland. As Lori approaches the place at night in a treacherous storm, her Land Rover slides off the path, just moments after Lori has voluntarily parted company from it. She is rescued by the perfect hero, Adam Chase, except that, of course, she already has her own private hero. Adam is conducting his own search in the area, and it takes all of Aunt Dimity's skills to help solve a puzzle dating back to the early days of World War I. This is very nearly the perfect book: romance, adventure, history, mystery, fantasy--all combined in one well-written story. What else could anyone want?
