Summary: There is better . .
Review: Assumed Identity draws you in, keeps you reading, and then drops you off. The first two-thirds are great and moderately believeable. The conclusion was entirely absurd! Plot development is initiated for some characters and then just dropped. No conclusion or follow-up. Buchanan (the lead character) takes a beating that no man could withstand. Not even in fiction! Close to the conclusion, he says that he has been working undercover so long that he is not in the best shape. Then how can he take the beating he has gotten throughout the entire book. If you have nothing else to read, then pick this up. The Fifth Profession was MUCH better.

Summary: One of the best books I have ever read
Review: Assumed Identity starts with a brilliant premise -- an intelligence operative who is as much a Method actor as he is a spy -- and runs with it for over 400 pages. However, what makes this book special is not its intricate plot, but it's character study of a burned-out, tormented figure, Brendan Buchanan.

Certainly the most complex individual I've come across in years of reading spy novels, Buchanan is a masterpiece of characterization. So skilled is he at assuming false identities in the course of his work that his own identity is all but gone. And the battle he wages -- to find his former love, protect his new partner, and save his own life -- is as much to defeat the evil facing him as it is to get his life back, if that's even possible.

Assumed Identity also is one of David Morrell's most plausible works. Morrell has played fast and loose with spy tradecraft and facts in previous books, like The Fraternity of the Stone and The Brotherhood of the Rose, but he's clearly done his homework here.

David Morrell has evoked comparisons with Graham Greene and Ernest Hemingway. I think he deserves them, and Assumed Identity is proof positive of his talent.

Summary: Assumed Identity is the Greatest of Morrell's Books
Review: David Morrell has really outdone himself. He has written his best book ever, the story of secret agent Brendan Buchanan. Assumed Identity is not a typical Cold War spy novel, but is a modern day novel with intricate plot twists. The basis of the story is that Buchanan's identity is blown on one of his missions and he spends the next few weeks following the trail of a long lost love and a billionaire with a dirty scheme. Overall, it is one of the all time best books I have ever read

Summary: It was good, but not his best...
Review: Ever since my friend got me to read Fraternity of the Stone, I've been reading Morrell books almost non-stop. Assumed Identity was a rather good book...except for the conclusion. The build-up and climax of the book are great (I especially liked the game), but I felt so deserted when the story ends without bringing Juana to light. I was disappointed by that fact, especially after Morrell dedicated an entire sub-chapter to her. It's good, but not his best.

Summary: Another action packed Morrell, but not quite his best.
Review: I have always enjoyed David Morrell's writing style, his genre, and his characters. In fact, my top two favorite books of all-time are his ('The Brotherhood Of The Rose' and 'The Fraternity Of The Stone'). This one, however, just lacked something going down the stretch.

The storyline is promising. Brendan Buchanan, a military intelligence operative, is forced to assume an identity more foreign to him than any other...his own. A newspaper reporter, Holly McCoy, is found to be following Buchanan as he tries to track down a women from his past that had sent him a distress signal.

The plot takes the cast of characters all across the United States, into Mexico, and other locations as well. The looks into the identities that Buchanan is forced to assume as part of assignments AND to protect himself otherwise definitely add something to the story. However, thr final sequences of the book, and the fact that one of the main parts of the storyline is unresolved, leave you feeling somewhat empty. The action scenes are classic Morrell, as is the prose, but the end seemed rushed.

Still a good read.

Summary: Morrell is a great adventure writer
Review: I have read every book written by Morrell and he is a great suspense adventure writer. He pulls you into the book and it's so realistic he makes you feel you are there ! As a writer I have learned from him how to SHOW and not TELL what is happening. I ran around looking for my new copy of THE FIFTH PROFESSION that I got from Amazon. I really needed a adventure fix and Morrell keeps you going right up to the very end !

Summary: Morrell does it again!
Review: I have read nearly all of Morrell's books and I can't put them down, especially this one. For Morrell to get a totally hyper person like me to sit down and read this book through and not want to put it down at supper (I never skip spaghetti), it had to be good and it was.

The downside to the book, I missed spaghetti. I warn you never, I mean never read this near dinner when it is your favorite food, you'll go to bed hungry.

Summary: A Definite Winner!!!
Review: I've never been the type to read a lot of "spy" novels before, but I was constantly hearing such good things about David Morrell that I finally went to the library and checked out Assumed Identity. I'm glad I did!
This was probably one of the best books I have read in the last year. If they decide to make a movie of this, I'm there. I'm not gonna go into all the details, but if you are at all interested in this genre, check this book out. Non-stop action, exciting characters, many locations they visit, it makes you feel like you are right there with Buchanan the whole time. Buy this Book!!!
