Rating: Summary: A BOOK THAT LEAVES YOU WANTING MORE Review: I found "Apaches" to be a compelling and interesting novel with good characters and a fine noir-ish plot. The only problem was that the 368 (paperback) pages left me wanting more and I believe Carcattera should have developed the plot further, pushing the length to the 450-range. Ialso heard that this will be made into a movie with Jerry Bruckenheimer producing. I think this will make a great film especially with the red meat, testerone influence of Bruckenheimer.
Rating: Summary: It hurt to finish this book. Review: "Apaches" by Lorenzo Carcaterra was as bad of a book as you could find these days. The story was so forced and contrived that it felt like you were watching an "A-Team" rerun. The characters were cartoonish in their macho absurdity. The plot was very predictable and the reader often found the characters doing things many pages after an ordinary person would have thought of it. I am a fan of such action/thriller books, but this was so dull that even the many comic book- like action scenes could not hold the reader's interest.I enjoyed "Sleepers" by this same author, but if that seemed far-fetched, "Apaches" pales in comparison. I would not recommend this book to anyone above the age of eight years old. The only surprises in the this alleged thriller was how much worse it continues to get as you read it.
Rating: Summary: Stunningly Riveting Review: This book truly astonished me. One the best books I have ever read. Carcaterra really presents his characters with great depth and displays the story with high energy and brilliant authorization.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put this one down Review: I don't really understand why the other readers didn't find it as good as I did. This is one of the most gripping books I have ever read. The action is face-paced and the dialogue kept to the minimum for maximum suspense. I strongly recommend it. This is one of the few books I have read at a sitting.
Rating: Summary: Crap Review: This book remindes me of a movie script that didn't make it to be a movie. Half the book goes into the background of the characters wich is interesting, although hardly believable. The other half just leaves you hanging with a pathetic ending. It is almost as if the writer decided he was tired of writing and quickly finished. I can not believe this made a best seller list.
Rating: Summary: Griping, disturbing, and far too real. Review: Carcatera has done it again, pulling us into a world of unthinkable horrors and all to real crimes. His unforgettable and unlikly heros are well developed and the action is intence. With the exception of some holes in the plot an good novel.
Rating: Summary: Crap! Review: One of the worst books I have read recently. The plot was absolutely absurd. I skimmed through to the end and then pitched it in the trash. Truly awful. Don't waste your money.
Rating: Summary: Apaches Fails to Meet Expectations Review: Superficial. Shallow. Fluff. I read Carcaterra's "SLEEPER'S" and considered it an outstanding book. I was less than enthralled with "Apaches". I found the characters to be too similar to one another and the the plot never moved below the surface. There was very little character development and the book never really rolled smoothly to its predictable conclusion, rather it jumped awkwardly from scene to scene, character to character. It was a fast read because of the action but, overall, a disappointing effort. Mr. Carcaterra is a master at re-creating the New York City of his adolescence and I hope he mines this territory in his next effort.
Rating: Summary: Dark and Disturbing...still interesting Review: There are other books I would want to read in retrospect. This was rather grisly but had enough pure action to hold my interest.Still, I would get this book from a friend rather than spend money on it. Resist the temptation.
Rating: Summary: Lazy research = technical failure. Review: I confess that I will not finish this book...if you like old Bogart movies, or read Mike Hammer stuff, you might like the dialog between the hero cops and the slimy villains. However, if you want to be able to suspend disbelief for enjoyment in reading fiction, this dog won't hunt. Since guns play such a significant role in the premise of the book, you might expect the author, obviously unfamiliar with the subject of firearms, to do minimal research so as not to offend the shooters among us who might buy the book. Sorry. One of his cops awaits a confrontation with "a .44 semiauto in one hand and a .38 revolver in the other". Huh? I'd like to know where he got this ".44 semiauto". A bit later he describes "Dead-eye" as having gotten his nickname in part because "give him a rifle with a scope and he could split a cantaloupe at 150 yards"...wow. Any semi-skilled shooter knows this is not a remarkable achievement. I used to love readi! ng Stephen King, but after several of his characters "snicked the safety off" on a revolver, I lost interest in him, too. These guys get paid for writing this stuff, right? Why can't they expend a little effort on research before they go to press? Leave this book alone. There is much better material out there. Buy cop books written by cops and ex-cops, or by civilians who care enough about their audiences to do a little work for their money.
