Rating: 1 stars
Summary: ludicrous
Review: This is from the same guy who wrote "Sleepers"?

Seems like a blatant attempt to cash in. "Apaches" is one of the most lame reads I've ever wasted my time on. Ludicrous plot, stereotypical characters, over the top violence that adds nothing to the story.

so bad that I laughed at the unintentional humor.

Thumbs down . . . way down.

Summary: Just plain bad
Review: The only good thing(s)that can ever be said about this book is that it's a quick read and has some action (ridiculous as it is) to keep you from getting too bored. But that is true of many many bad books, and this is one of the worst novels I've read of late. I dont' understand Lorenzo Carcaterra. You think he'd try to build a good reputation after Sleepers became a best-seller (as questionably "true" as it was) but this is terrible. Terrible. I don't know, maybe he just had a contract to write an incredibly stupid, cliched, comic-book crime novel, but this is one of those books that should have went straight to paperback. Recommended only if you have read EVERY other book you have ever wanted to read.

Summary: A waste of time
Review: This was a quick read and semi-fun at some points but in the end it added up to a waste of time and thought. Couldn't Carcaterra come up with something better than a drug ring that uses dead babies to ship drugs coast to coast. And this is supposed to be 1982. Back then, with less security and moving only from state to state there wasn't ONE other easier way to move coke around? Ooookay. After this crock I just might buy another book from Carcaterra, with Sleepers rating just slightly higher.

Summary: Anyone want my copy?
Review: I loved Sleepers but was flabbergasted at how bad Apaches was. Is this the same writer? Could this novel be any more ridiculous and cliche-ridden?

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: Starts out cheesy and gets worse and worse as it goes along
Review: The ending of APACHES alone is enough to sink this mind-numbingly awful novel. From being a "gritty" cop story it somehow ends in the desert with a bunch of dedicated (but not very smart) cops who refuse to stop busting baddies because they are disabled attacking the house of the country's biggest female drug lord. I think they were all mentally disabled as well when they left the force, because anyone who would agree to be part of a rag-tag operation of crippled cops--with a very politically correct mix of white, black, Native American, male, female, bright and boring--has to be really bored or really stupid. The ending involves a massive gun battle complete with bombs, and most laughably, M-60s which the main characters are somehow able to hide in their coats. For that detail alone Carcaterra should be ashamed. This book starts at least somewhat decent before becoming steadily stupider and stupider. I had to finish it just to see how cheesy it could get. I found out. From now on when I read a bad novel I'm going to compare it to APACHES to see if it holds up.

Summary: Worst best-seller of 1997
Review: The nights it took me to read this would have been better spent clipping my nose hairs. The cheesiest, most laughable plot and collection of characters. "Boomer", "Dead-Eye", "Pins". You can almost see the cardboard edges. Most emotional scene has two of the characters calmly accepting that they're gonna get blown to bits in a bowling alley. Bravo, Carcaterra. Carcaterra follows a formula in this book. It's called: GARBAGE

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A book that draws you in from the first chapter
Review: Carcaterra manages to combine character development with action this book that you can't put down once you start reading it. The story can be slightly perplexing at times but it is an excellent read. A real gritty down and dirty book that manages to hold a reader's interest.

Rating: 5 stars
Summary: A very heroic tale of a courageous band of ex-cops.
Review: I think this is a wonderful book from the author Lorenzo Carcaterra. I have never read any of his books, but this novel certainly took my breath away. Even though some readers complained of the graphic and sometimes unbelievable crimes that were committed in the story(but shouldn't you stop to think that crimes like those do go on in society)but coming from a seventeen year old's point of view I think that the story is all together brilliant. The passion these police officers had before they were put out of commission, I have never seen in a police officer out of the world of fantasy. These officers strived to at least make one last difference in their world before they had to live in it without feeling the satisfaction of knowing they made it safe for future citizens and themselves. The lifestyle they had to take because of their injuries could not feed the hunger and feeling they missed of bringing down a criminal. The way "Pins and "Geronimo" died was very moving because of the way they shared that special moment right before they died. Also the way "Boomer" and Mrs. Columbo carried their secret love for each other all the way till the end was just so breathtaking. I would recommend it to any high school student or a person of any age, believe me you won't regret reading this book. If I had it my way I would give it ten stars. I also want to include my English teacher Ms. Bernabei for encouraging me to read the book.

Summary: Carcaterra: destined to be a one-hit wonder
Review: That one hit? You all know it well: Sleepers. Apaches on the other hand is by far one of the worst novels I have ever read, and I had to think for a long time to find only a very short list of worse garbage than this. He probably wanted to churn out something to get made into a movie quick. It's called cashing in, and with only his second novel it's a sign that Carcaterra is destined to be a hack, if not a memory with any more crap like this. This book is so poorly planned and plotted and the action and characters at times so laughably bad that you'll run to your computer to try and pen a better book. And most of you will probably succeed.

Rating: 1 stars
Summary: A bad attempt at an underestimated genre.
Review: I read the synopsis of this novel and assumed that it was either a police procedural or a hardboiled action novel. It was neither. If anything, it was a weak attempt at the latter. Carcaterra, like so many others, thinks that writing hardboiled fiction is easy - just write about some big guys with guns and villians that perform unspeakable evils. You don't need a tight plot, just action, baby! Wrong. Good hardboiled fiction has flavor, substance, and mood. J.L. Burke writes such poetic narrative, I can smell New Orleans as I read. J. Ellroy's narrative echoes the yellow journalism of the 40's and 50's, and transports me to that time. Lorenzo Carcaterra proves with Apaches, that it takes a lot more than tough cops and heartless villians to create good hardboiled fiction.
