Rating: Summary: Make it go away! Review: This is one of the worst novels I have ever read, period. To call Lorenzo Carcaterra a hack is a higher compliment than he will ever deserve. I only get more depressed at the thought of the inevitable movie this will become.
Rating: Summary: EXCELLENT. Review: I am an avid reader of crime novels. This book was riveting because it was close to reality. Read the newspapers everyday and this book will not seem like fiction. This should be a movie.
Rating: Summary: "Apaches" raw, visceral language digs up unconscious sewage Review: "Apaches" digs out socially offensive, unforgivable, unconscious sewage and puts it into words for the world to read. It depicts an atmosphere of lowlife atrocities done by subhuman filth against children, amplifies it to the maximum, and satisfies the justice-seeking idealism of the reader at the rawest.
Rating: Summary: Gut wrenching, Hard to put down. Review: The plot was an excellent one at that. The only part I had trouble with was the part with the kidnapped girl and the babies, not that it's bad it's just sort of nasty. But hey nasty usually you won't be able to put it down. Good Job LC
Rating: Summary: YOU GET WHAT YOU WANT-ACTION,VIOLENCE,INTEREST Review: This book certainly provided enough food for discussion in thisreview list. Whether Carcaterra is a one hit wonder or not-he stillmanaged to get over 65 people to comment on his work. Personally, i love brainless action with minimum character development. You get more than six stories in one novel. What more can you want? This is no literary masterpiece, but definitely a page turner whether you've read Sleepers or not!
Rating: Summary: A riveting plot! Undeniably powerful! Emotion envoking! Review: This book is written with a passion which separates it from any other. It's a story with such intensely human characters its hard to believe they don't exist. It portrays evil in its worst form. But it also teaches the reader what real courage is. Truly awe inspiring!
Rating: Summary: Mixed feelings, but I think I know what went wrong here. Review: Before preparing my own review, I couldn't help noticing the preceding reviews, most of which were poles apart, either loving or hating this book. As a fellow writer I think I know what went wrong here. First of all, Sleepers was an exceptionally good book, and so the first stage of disappointment can set in if making a direct comparison. But I think many reviewers have been wrong to criticize Carcaterra for lack of depth in his characters. Indeed, he devotes quite lengthy segments to the backgrounds of each; and given the number of key characters, seven, this is more than many an author might devote. And while this then has the backlash effect of diluting the focus on the main character, Boomer, the main problem here was that having set everything in place, the final denouement was weak - a rather quick, slam-bang showdown in almost boy's own adventure style. No room was left for the characters to flesh out and move around the pages and come more to life in real time. We knew a lot about their backgrounds, but a deeper, more multi-layered plot was needed here to test their metal and character. The quick showdown style also then unfortunately showed up the villian as rather shallow and two dimensional. What would have helped here was a more up-and-down, twists and turns plot before the final confrontation. I actually enjoyed the beginning of this book, despite perhaps too many characters, but I felt that all of this was leading somewhere big rather than what happened in the end - a rather quick wrap-up and fizzle out
Rating: Summary: The Best of the Best. Review: I have read many Detective books but they can't hold a candle to "Apaches". Dirty Harry is a wimp by compairson. You will fall in love with all of the "Apaches" and when you finish the book you will feel like you are loosing a friend, and not want to put it away on the book shelf. I have loaned Apaches out to many of my friends and they all say it's the best they ever read. "Give us more Lorenzo" Bring back Boomer and the rest in on going Novels.C.W. Tilley
Rating: Summary: Wow, that was bad Review: Carcaterra should be arrested for writing this. This was absolutely awful, and laughable at that. I can almost see the rushed film for it. How on earth did this become a best-seller?
Rating: Summary: What a shame Review: I was looking forward alot to this book by the guy who wrote Sleepers but this was terrible. It all reads like some cheesy cop movie, complete with mindless violence and stereotypical characters. What a waste of my money.
