Rating: Summary: Very thought provoking Review: Since I am a huge fan of Chris Van Allsburg's illustrations, I have to admit that I bought The Mysteris of Harris Burdick for myself, under the guise that my kids would benefit, but they really have gotten a lot from this book. My 3 and 6 yr olds pull this book out any time they are too bored, and make up amazing stories for the images inside. My children get enough enjoyment out of it that I also bought a copy for my oldest daughter's kindergarten class, that I volunteer in frequently. My daughter's teacher thought The Mysteries of Harris Burdick may be a bit "disturbing" for some of the kids, but he put it on the shelf anyway, and I have not heard of any complaints from the kids, or parents.
Rating: Summary: Unbelievable! Review: Someone brought this book into my work and I happened to flip through it. I am 18 years old, and I was so excited about this book that I decided to buy it! The pictures are visually captivating, and when you read the mysterious captions it can spark ANYONE'S imagination! I keep going back and looking at the pages and finding other scenarios and ideas forming in my mind. It's a never-ending toy! :)
Rating: Summary: Harris Burdick Mysteries Review: The book, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick, is a great book. It sparks you imagination to get going. You just sit there and look at the pictures and stories pop in you head. One of my high school teachers use this book and think it is a great piece of material to get you students to think creatively. This book is not just for young kids, it is good for people my age. I think all teachers that deal with English teaching or any writing classes should use this. If you are a top._ looking for a good book, by this one. Chris Van Allsburg is a great writer, he just does not make books suitable for young kids it is good for adults, too.
Rating: Summary: Harris Burdick Mysteries Review: The Harris Burdick Mysteries are the best things I've had to work with in a long time. It's been awhile since I last wrote a story that I really got into, and this was the perfect thing I needed to spark new ideas for my own stories. I really think everyone, no matter how old, should at least read one of these mysteries. I guarantee you'll enjoy them.
Rating: Summary: This book forces your imagination to take flight. Review: The illustrations are so captivating and evocative that even the most die-hard non-creative has to start using the right brain. I've used this book as a tool to jump-start creative brainstorming sessions as well as a tool to teach creative writing to adults.
Rating: Summary: My Brain's Barbells Review: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick by Chris Van Allsburg is a book where they give you a title, a picture , and an opening sentence. You have to create the rest of the story. It lets you use creativity and allows you to write whatever you want. But the writing you do is in a strict matter. One example is a picture of a ship the size of the Titanic. The Ship is going through an extremely tiny canal in Venice, knocking down large buildings. The title is Missing in Venice and it gives you the first line of the story. As for the pictures they are absolutely marvelous. They have tons of details , are black and white , and are very haunting. This book has stimulated my brain to write with the ingredients that the book presents me. It inspires me to write every day. Also it builds my vocabulary and gives my brain a workout. I give The Mysteries of Harris Burdick five out of five stars and recommend it for all ages.
Rating: Summary: The art of the understatement used to it¿s full potential Review: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick has the ability to capture a child's or an adult's imagination. The pictures were beautifully done, and the captions are just enough to inspire, but not take control of the story. I think that Chris van Allsburg was the greatest children's author of the twentieth century.
Rating: Summary: A Tool for the Imagination Review: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is a creative approach to a young adult book that I have never wittnessed before. He incorporates within the book's content a letter at the beginning professing that he found the photos and does not know their origin. This creative approach disattaches the author from the material so the reader has this sense that they have fallen upon a mystery, a magical new world, of some unknown artist. I plan to be a teacher, and I can see this book being a great tool to start creative writing assignments. As one opens the book, they see picture after picture of scenes that boggle the mind and defy normal reality. It is a fresh approach to the imagination and sharpens the mind.
Rating: Summary: Stories for the Imagination Review: The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is an intriguing book that captures the mind of any viewer. The black and white pictures and short captions at the bottom of each picture make the mind wonder to far off places. Each picture depicts any number of situations that the imagination is allowed to create. Small children may take pleasure from looking at the pictures, but people of any age can enjoy the mind boggling experience from the book. The pictures can be used as a teaching aide to children in elementary and high schools alike. No matter what age you are, The Mysteries of Harris Burdick is well worth the effort.
Rating: Summary: BEST book! Review: The mysteries of Harris Burdick is great. If you want to write a storie for kids, this has some great start ups. There are-but not limited to-"Archie Smith, Boy Wonder," "Missing in Venice," and "Uninvited Guests." Want to know the captions or pictures? Buy this book! Note: These are the only parts of the stories known, so if you want the stories, you're out of luck.
