Rating: Summary: Thriller with an unexpected twist Review: I read this book during two rainy summer nights ... and I liked it a lot. The author investigates the minds of one serial killer, and one detective. There are other characters too, of course, but these two characters are the ones really worth studying. Red Metcalfe at Scotland Yard is hunting a very skilfull serial killer, who does not leave any traces behind. It seems hopeless, but he and his team eventually manages (with a little help from the killer himself) to figure out the pattern. The problem is only that now that they know, they feel even more helpless. More people may be killed anyway. Starling lets us follow the thoughts of both Red Metcalfe and the serial killer ... which is both very interesting and thought-provoking. I would say that this is a very well made study of man's mind in general - only most of us are neither serial killers nor detectives. Still, Starling has much to teach us about the darker side of humanity, the side that most of us successfully suppress. Aside from the psychological part, this book is a real page turner and actually a very quick read although it is almost 500 pages long. It is very hard not to read just another chapter ... The end actually surprised me, and I am not easily surprised. I have read lots of detective stories (although this is more of a thriller than a detective story) and it is seldom one gets really surprised. I have never seen an end constructed like this one, and I would say that it is as inventive as the end of The Murder of Roger Ackroyd.
Rating: Summary: One of the best thrillers I've read-ever! :) Review: Wow-whatta book! I didnt know exactly what to expect from this book....never read anything from the writer before so I was a bit wary. The first chapter easily took away any doubts that I wouldnt enjoy this book. A well-written and fast-paced book-good luck trying to put the book down and heading to bed! ;) There are some prerequisite ploit twists and turns....but very good and effective ones at least! I was most impressed by the authors effectiveness when it camr to the killer and all of his specificies......I was truly impressed at how intelligent and intruiging the crimes were and even more so when you find out just what the killers pattern is. Overall, this is one of the best books I've read all year, and definitely the best thriller! :O)
Rating: Summary: Well worth a look Review: Not one to normally follow the rules, I saw this books cover, liked it, so bought it. Impulsive maybe, but it was an inspired choice. Enjoyable from start to finish its dark, exciting, it makes for compulsive reading. The plot is cleverly constructed, keeping the reader caught up in the story, watching for the next twist yet still managing to spring a few surprises. Having never heard of Boris Starling before, the best recommendation I can give is that once I finished Messiah, I went and bought another of his titles. While doing so, I ran across a new copy of Messiah, complete with a new cover which was far less eye-catching than the original. Were I to apply a moral to the review, I guess it'd have to be.. It's what's on the inside that counts!
Rating: Summary: saw it coming! Review: Excellent, well written thriller that will keep you turning pages late into the night. The dialogue was terrific, if you don't care much for dialogue tags. As great as the tale was, however, I saw the end coming from about mid-book. Little innocuous details given are sometimes good for foreshadowing, but a huge, gaping hole that gets left uncovered is kind of hard to overlook. Also, did anyone notice the shocking similarities to Thomas Harris' Red Dragon & Silence of the Lambs? The Killer hanged one of his victims exactly like in "Silence," Red's marital woes, exactly like in "Red Dragon," the leaving of the silver spoon in the victim's mouths (In "Silence" it was a butterfly). Anyway... this was a fantastic, intelligent read.
Rating: Summary: Review on "Messiah" Review: I would definatly recommend this book. Boris Starling keeps you on the edge of your seat and he leaves you wanting more. This is one of the best books on murder that you will read. It has 457 pages and the title is "Messiah." The title "Messiah" has to do with the killer, but i can't say anymore or else i will give it away. The story takes place in presant time London. The important charactors in the story are: Redfern (Red) Metcalf, Duncan Warren, Jez Clifton and Kate Beachamp. Red is the main charactor, the rest follow. The basic plot is that Red, a detective, is very good at catching murderers. He has this way of getting inside the muderers head, know what they are thinking, and catch them. But this time, its different. He has to catch a serial killer, but he can't figure anything out. With the help of his partners (Duncan, Kate and Jez) they slowly figure things out, but is it too late? One part in the book that i wish that i had written, is: "The world produces enough food to feed it's entire population. But a third of that population goes hungry. And you know what? Nobody cares. The small minority who do care- who campaign agianst environmental degration or go to church or help the poor-are mocked as freaks or cranks."- Boris Starling, "Messiah" page 315. The cover of the book is a picture of a mans face, I assume that it is the killer. The book has many twists and turns but everything comes together in the end. When you think you have everything figured out, Starling makes the impossible become possible. You will enjoy this book, especially if you like suspence thrillers and the ending will shock you.
Rating: Summary: Sick and demented, but great FUN! Review: This book gets you on your toes on just the first page! it is a guarenettd page turner. If you like murder mysteries, and lots of details, here is the book for you.
Rating: Summary: If you love supsense thrillers, you gonna love this one.... Review: Wonderful, well written and kept me guessing who the killer was to the end of the book! It is gory when explaining the murders which I think is needed to understand the killer. So if you don't mind the gore, I highly recommend. CAN'T WAIT TO SEE IF THIS WILL TURN INTO A MOVIE!!
Rating: Summary: Hold on tight Review: This is a must read through and through, but not for those with a weak stomach. This is a very graphic but very well written tale of a serial killer who thinks he is "The Messiah". This is the first book i have read by Boris but im sure it wont be the last. This book is so good i already have my co-workers reading it as well. Pick this book up you wont be dissapointed.
Rating: Summary: Terrific first novel by an author that bears watching Review: Wow. I wasn't expecting too much going in, so this book was quite a pleasant surprise. Quite horrific in places, while in other places it actually will make you think, this book is well written, with a main character/detective that is refreshingly different from the hordes of single cops with dark secrets and high sex drives that pervade most books of this genre. The best part about this book though, by far, are the murders and the way the city itself reacts. I think that's what I enjoyed about this book more than everything else, while the plot was good and the characters a treat, the true jem in this book is the realism...I could almost imagine that this had quite possibly really happened. And in fact, there are some real-life murder cases that bear a strong resemblence to this novel... Great job, Mr. Starling! A high recommendation here.
Rating: Summary: Absolutely mind blowing.. Review: I've never been so disturbed by a book! Boris Starling is brilliant! He has created one of the most chilling fictional serial killers ever imagined. This book kept me reading late into the night, and when I was finally able to pull away from the pages I was unable to sleep because of what I had just read! Totally sick and twisted! My kind of book!
