Rating: Summary: One action packed Book--- I couldn't put the book down! Review: Now-- i don't usually read books. In fact-- i hate books! There was just something about this book that would't allow me to put it down! I think the fact that Cook is a doctor, makes the book seem more realistic. This is the first book iI have read of Cook and I will defenatly read more of his books! I would recomend this book to anyone who likes books that start off right from the begining.
Rating: Summary: Better than a Bad Burger Review: There's some irony that Robin Cook, whose books are like fast food, tackles the meat industry. The expose is a little slender, like a 20-20 report done for as dumbed-down audience. Much more telling is Richard Rhodes' non-fiction book, "Deadly Feast." Nevertheless, Cook's effort is fast-paced and entertaining, even if the plot seems a bit paint-by-the-numbers. A literal movie version undoubtedly would be a howler. The best part is the father's manic and destructive behavior after waiting three hours in an emergency room (attacking a trash can, decking an attending physician). The feeling is understandable, though the father is a cardiologist and you'd think he'd know of such things. Adding to the incredulity is the reality that n most hospitals the fellow, doctor or not, would be arrested. Here he is let off only to go on and have other tamper tantrums. Of course, his daughter's disturbing illness explains his agitation. A sub-plot involving the guilt of divorced parents and the tendency to attribute blame nicely fleshes out the story. After the inevitable, the protaginist tries to track down the infection through a meat plant. The book falls apart at this point. Stereotypes are trotted out and confusing chase sequences ensue. The meat industry is portayed with the sympathy typically reserved for depictions of the Mafia. And as a vigilante the character is ludicrous. Whatever. The book's a good beach read and you should not feel shortchanged if high tide carrries it off to sea. Just don't grab a burger as a substitute.
Rating: Summary: terrible, terrible dialogue, characters and no direction. Review: I usually enjoy Robin Cook, some of his earlier stuff is great, but I don't know what happened to him this time, the supposed cardiac surgeon was acting like a ridiculous spoiled brat, no-one really seemed to care about Becky dying, the dialogue absolutely stank and the ending was not fair, we don't find out properly what happens to the meat industry, and the couple, but you know, I didn't even really care. The only thing I got out of it was the insight on how burgers are made.
Rating: Summary: Informative and graphic expose of meat industry Review: After reading this book I will NEVER eat fastfood burgers again. Although the characters were not particularly well developed the story line was compelling. It was written in Cook's informative style where the subject matter was more important than the characters.
Rating: Summary: One of Cook's Best Review: When I picked up this book, I thought this book was going to end up being a corny, scientific drama. I WAS WRONG! This book is suspensful, action-packed, and frightingly real. It makes you wonder what your eating at a fast food place.
Rating: Summary: A good theme, but ridiculous... Review: An informative disclosure of the dark side of the meat industry. It also made me scream. Not at the industry, but at the ridiculous acts of Dr. Riggies. I just cant believe a well educated professional who was told as one of the best surgeon could act like an irrational bull. All those phsicological explanation made by his wife did not justify his destructive actions. Dr. Reggie does not has a head of calm and precision he supposed to have. How could he make a self-defense killing become a fully certified murder by running away from the scene with leaving the weapon behind intentionally? The total effort just make his accuse to the meat industry weakened.
Rating: Summary: Exciting and informative but not very believable Review: I'll probably become a vegetarian because of this book. I found it very exciting and I learned a lot about the meat industry but I had a very hard time accepting the way the parents behaved after losing their only daughter. If the author had made that more realistic it would have been a more believable read.
Rating: Summary: Stilted dialogue, poor character development, farfetched Review: Protagonist Kim Reggis is not a believable character with his constant outbursts and physical assaults on colleagues, fast-food hamburger slingers, and others. The two-dimensional bad guys in the beef industry are portrayed as mafia-style dons willing to assassinate Federal regulators. I had to read this book but I wouldn't have finished it if I hadn't been told to. Buy something by Richard Preston instead.
Rating: Summary: farfetched but kept me turining the pages Review: despite the stilted dialogue and the cardboard characters, this book had me glued to my chair. at times the plot was a little far fetched, but was a great read nonetheless. after reading this i am seriuosly considering turning vegetarian!
Rating: Summary: Great climax- disapointing ending Review: Toxin was a great book with a great storyline. Some parts were a little farfetched. It really made you think twice about eating hamburgers! The part that I really didn't like about this book was the ending. It basically stopped the story at a dead halt and it hardly told you anything about what happened to the characters. If you don't mind guessing how everything turned out I would reccommend this book.
