Summary: What a disappointment...
Review: For the return of Paul Madriani, I guess I was expecting a lot more. I also figured out the whodunnit very early on, so I was bored to tears waiting for the ending. Mr. Martini is starting to remind me of Grisham, Patterson, etc. Turning out books with very little character/storyline development. It's sad to see...

Summary: wait for the paperback
Review: Well, it's nice to have the familiar cast of characters back. I was disapointed by the move to San Diego. Sacramento (aka "River City") was a more interesting & realistic locale for Martini. It was obvious he didn't know the area as well, it had little to no detailed local flavor, which was a plus in the prior Madriani books.

The story was ok, not his best by any means. Martini used to hook you in with his interesting characters. Here it was hard to warm up to Jonah, you don't really care if he is acquitted or convicted. In Martini's better books, the main characters (Madriani, Hinds, etc) reacted to the plot and it's central character, the accused, who you felt for and got to know. Here it seemed reverse engineered, somewhat contrived. The plot was a bit slow to develop and many of the characters were under-developed, you just never got to know them very well.

However, he's still the master of the court room dialogue. No other current "legal thriller" author holds a candle to Martini in this regard. He has the ability to explain trial strategies & why questions are asked or why they are asked in certain ways, in simple straight forward language. You don't have to be a lawyer to understand what his lawyers are doing in the courtroom or why they are doing it.

That part of this book alone, makes it a worthwhile read. I think that Martini should stay in the courtroom.

Summary: Where oh where is an honest review these days?
Review: Chicago Tribune, said, "Plenty of zigs and zags in the plotting make this another strong outing for Martini." Their purpose is to sell. Remember that. I will always read Steve Martini's riveting tales, but this one, The Attorney, was ho-hum. Predictable, forced action. No surprizes. Same thing is happening to Grisham. I can barely get through Grisham's latest and I haven't found a hero yet.

Summary: Boring, boring, boring, very disappointed
Review: I was so looking forward to the new Martini book. What a disappointment. I could barely get thru it and couldn't wait to finish it. Have really liked all of his previous books.

Summary: A major disappointment!
Review: I have adored Steve Martini's books, and have read all of them. Until now. I waited with eager anticipation for this newest book. I was bored to tears with it. I couldn't even finish it. I read about three quarters of it and gave up. What happened to him?

Summary: Disappointing
Review: This is an easy enough read, but I figured out whodunnit almost immediately, and this is never good for a book like this. The court room scenes are entertaining enough, but no better than many other in this genre.

Overall, I was disappointed.

Summary: Excellent book
Review: I was very pleasantly suprised with this book. After reading the jacket cover I didn't think that it would be all that good, but in the end it was a pretty solid book. Paul Madriani is a well written character, and the supporting cast is fairly interesting for the most part. Lots of suspense and action, and plenty of twists keep the book moving along at a fast pace. I found some of the courtroom scenes to be a bit dull though. As well I am not sure I totally buy the end. But these complaints aside, it is a good and exciting read.

Summary: phoned it in?
Review: I have read virtually everything that Mr. Martini has produced. His earlier stuff was good to very good, but, here, I get the feeling that he was writing just to fulfill a publishing contract or something. This is not his best work, and I had the feeling that he just, to use that overworked phrase, 'phoned it in.' He has great potential, but he just does not live up to it here. Take no offense, sir. I quit reading John Grisham for the same reason. All 'pop,' no 'culture.'

Summary: A well routed novel
Review: This was the first I had read of his books and I thought it was okay: it had a well planned plot and was written stylishly, but it lacked the pizazz I was looking for at the moment. The beginning built up and gave you the impression of a firework ending, but the climaz was so subtle that I almost missed it.

Summary: Another Superb Book by Martini
Review: The Attorney, a Paul Madriani book, is superb -- witty, a great plot and Harry Hinds. I hope that Mr. Martini continues these characters in at least one more book.
