Summary: I'm a little confused
Review: I have just finished reading The Attorney. The thing that just doesn't register with me is how did that cigar get on the body of the victim Suade. I liked the story and the way the author develops the characters. But if Ontaveroz was not in the car the ending doesn't add up. Maybe I am missing something but I did go back and read the ending chapters again.

Summary: This is his masterpiece!
Review: They say that every author has his masterpiece and this is Martini's best and what a masterpiece it is! Enthralling!

Summary: Don't Bother!
Review: I'm not sure what possessed me to buy this book . Oh yes! The fact that the cover stated that "the suspense is excruciating" or on the back of the book stating that the story is "riveting." I was very very disappointed to say the least. I was halfway through the book waiting for something exciting to happen. Plus the ending was a major letdown. I would NOT recommend this book.

Summary: First book I have read of Steve Martini's
Review: I must tell you I am not much of a reader but after going to the bookstore and reading the back of the book I was anxious to read it. I started reading the book during my vacation and found that I could not put the book down. The book certainly takes you through the twists and turns which every good legal thriller should. At then end of the book, I thought I knew what the outcome would be but you are in for a big surprise. I hope you enjoy it as much as I have.

Summary: Not Martini's best, but better than most courtroom thrillers
Review: If you like Martini's other stuff, you'll like this. It has the usual, welcomed Martini hallmarks.

The Attorney is a little different than the others in the series in that the protagonist did not spend as much time discussing his family issues. Some of you will be happy about that, but Martini missed out on an opportunity to touch on the single parenting of a pre-teen.

Harry Hinds remains in the series, unfortunately not as prominently. He always added a certain kind of odd, understated comic relief. He's like the 'Kramer' to Madriani's 'Seinfield.'

Some people might complain about the ending, but I liked the ironic twist. Most of Martini's endings are way over the top and, in the case of Undue Influence, the endings can be too much of a reach. This ending fell together pretty neatly in the attorney.

Enjoy this book! I'm the kind of reader who stops reading most suspense books by chapter two because they aren't that good. Martini's courtroom books are always entertaining and compelling.

Summary: Another Gripando or Grisham
Review: Having become addicted to both of the above authors I am always searching for more authors of that ilk. I found it in Steve Martini. The very day I finished "The Lawyer" I ordered 6 additional books by this author.

Great story, masterfuly written, interesting and surprise ending could have been and probably should have been expanded.

Summary: Welcome Back, Paul Madriani
Review: After two so-so books with other chracters, Steve Martini has returned to attorney Paul Madriani and crafted a wonderful tale in his graceful, all-in-the-present-perfect prose. Madriani, a widower with a young daughter, has moved to San Diego to be near the first real love interest in his life since his wife's death, Susan McKay, a child protection worker within the system. Madriani's client, Jonathan Hale, desperate to find his kidnapped granddaughter, is accused of murdering the woman who engineered her disappearance, an over-the-bend women's rights advocate named Zolanda Suade. There is tense courtroom drama (strategy brilliantly explained), an improbable shoot-'em-up in Mexico and a surprise ending. Surprising but not unfair; the clues are there, subtle but there. It is Madriani, and Martini, at their best.

Summary: The abridged version
Review: Since a lot of people have given their comments on the hardcover or paperback version of the book, I would like to comment on the abridged version of it. Myself, I bought the CD set of this book read by Christopher Meloni. Chris is one of the actors in Law and Order, Special Victims Unit. Furthermore he has played in The Runaway Bride and in Junior, as well as in a lot of other tv films and series. I enjoy his acting a lot, so I decided to buy this abridged book as well. I think Chris has a really nice voice to listen to. As a professional actor (he graduated from the University of Colorado at Boulder where he studied drama) he knows how to use different accents and heights in his voice for different characters in the book. This makes the reading very alive and interesting and it makes it easier to follow the dialogues. And it really amazed me how consistent he is with the accents. I most definately enjoyed the book and I am thinking of buying the other book Chris has read as well, which is True Justice by Robert Tanenbaum. Normally I only read books and not listen to abridged one's, but in this case I would really recommend this to fans of Christopher Meloni. He has done an exellent job with the reading. Also it's very recommended to people that enjoy abridged books.

Summary: Don't be too critical--this is a GREAT courtroom thriller!
Review: Welcome back to print Paul Madriani!! I have to say, Paul is my FAVORITE character in ALL of the Legal-Thrillers I have read. I was really missing Paul since Mr. Martini had abandoned him for a couple of novels ('The List' & 'Critical Mass'--both I did not enjoy) but returned back to the character that gave his writing career an incredible boost with 'The Attorney'. I must say, Mr. Martini has NOT lost his ability to write a hum-dinger of a story. While not my favorite of his Madriani novels ('The Judge' was by FAR my favorite) this is still a great murder/mystery story that was interesting from beginning to its very end.

Now I feel that I MUST register my thoughts on how others did NOT enjoy this book (mostly due to the ending): According to those nay-sayers, the ending was a bit too neat and contrived and was such a surprise as to merit no credibility...I disagree TOTALLY. I for one did NOT find the ending a surprise (I had figured the 'real culprit' wasn't going to be the obvious, so I automatically began to suspect those who you wouldn't normally suspect, and lo-and-behold I predicted the killer--WHY? Because of the tiny clues that Martini laid out in the story!).

I enjoyed the location change from Capitol City to San Diego, and all of the legal in's & out's which are revealed in the investigation and the courtroom proceedings. Its nice to see it done by a REAL attorney (Mr. Martini practiced law for many years prior to becoming an author) and you can SEE where that legal expertise came in to play in this story. I am clearly at a loss as to why this book received anything BUT 5 stars...Maybe those who were surprised at the ending failed to capture the clues that were left that implicated the 'real' killer...who knows? All I know is that Mr. Martini is one GREAT legal-thriller writer, possibly the best out there (in MY opinion anyway) and 'The Attorney' is a fantastic example of what a courtroom-drama SHOULD be. One of the better novels of this genre I have read in the past 5 years. Highly Recommended.

Summary: Good Read Up To The End
Review: This is the first time I have read Steve martini's work. It kept me on my toes trying to figure out what was going to happen next. It had alot of strange twists. I really enjoyed reading this book. However, the ending result of the novel could have been better. Overall, a good legal thriller.
