Rating: Summary: A good editor might have saved this book. Review: The book is full of idiomatic English not appropriate to the locale - an Irish author writing about locations in the United States. Further, there were numerous technical errors about the operation of firearms. Most notably in the climatic scene. The story line needed tightening. The author's writing has promise when not ruined by the jarring technical flaws.
Rating: Summary: A little gory but it had to be to reflect the theme Review: When it comes to suspense, tension, and dark appeal, Every Dead Thing is tough to beat. I have seldom read a novel that kept me so absorbed. The epic war novel, "The Triumph and the Glory" was the last book I read that had such visceral appeal and relentless tension.
Rating: Summary: Uneven at first; a roller-coaster through hell by the end. Review: Despite a strong start, I quickly found myself getting bored with Connolly's attempt to create a world of characters that he could build a book series upon. The story starts with our hero attempting to find the murderer of his wife and child, but meanders far and wide before getting back on track in the final 50 pages. Despite my waning interest, the characters of Bird, Louis, Angel, and the mysterious, grisly psychopath "Travelling Man" kept me going until the satisfying, edge-of-my-seat ending. Uneven, but I will give connolly's next book a look. The guy has raw talent.
Rating: Summary: The next Thomas Harris Review: "Just when I thought I had figured it out .... he pulled me back in!" This is a great first novel for John Connolly; he out did "Hannibal" by a mile. I liked the 2 in 1 story line and the plot twists - you won't believe the ending. If you start this book be prepared to finish it in one sitting. I can't wait for Connolly's next one!
Rating: Summary: I dont think many people will be asking for their money back Review: I read this book in about 6 hours and I couldnt put it down. After my disappoinment with Hannibal I was relieved to find someone to take Thomas Harris' place. One of the things that I enjoyed most about this book were the characters of Angel and Louis, who brought a smile to my face during a most chilling tale. I would like to add that I have just today finished John Connollys new book named on my proof copy as Requiem For The Damned but renamed apparantly as "Death Hollow" and for the people out there who loved Every Dead Thing you certainly wont be disappointed with his second offering. To keep me happy it again stars Charlie and his sidekicks Angel and Louis.
Rating: Summary: In a word, mesmerising. Stunning in two Review: That Connolly can write electrically is beyond doubt, as highlighted in this outstanding read. A thoroughly distrubing yet highly readable and strangely amoral tale which betters Thomas Harris' "Hannibal". In a fair and just world Mr.Connolly will go very big places very quickly. One to keep and eye on, methinks.
Rating: Summary: A page turner, with only a few holes. Review: I really enjoyed reading this book, even with all the gore. However, I was a little disappointed in the branching off into way too many characters throughout the book, many not even relevant to the plot. But in spite of this, the writing style is good with a true "street" sense (which really surprised me when I saw the author lives in Ireland). Reading the book, you feel the authenticity of the locales, as if the reader resides in the places he writes about. A good first work. His next will be even better if he sticks to the plot at hand and doesn't scatter off in too many historical details of unnecessary characters.
Rating: Summary: Impressed with this as a first offering from a new author. Review: I found the book kept my attention but as others said, some of it should have been in anotlher book. Why send Angel & Louis away? They should have been there at the end, especially as Louis is the first to state that the guy is not exactly what he seems. The ending of the book was somewhat anti-climatic, because it was expected. Anyway, I enjoyed the book and hope that the continuation will be along very soon. Make sure he includes Angel & Louis as continuing characters. They provide a kind of focusing point for Bird's character.
Rating: Summary: Had The Potential To Be Great...But Review: Every Dead Thing is a good first effort by John Connelly and it had the potential to be great. It has many of the elements loved by lovers of serial killer thrillers -- fast-pacing, murders and gore galore and lots of plot twists. However, my main fault with this book is that Connelly failed to develop his main character and key supporting characters well enough for me to feel that I really knew them and, as a result, I never cared enough about what happened to them. If this had been done more satisfactorily I definitely would have rated Every Dead Thing a "5". Connelly is an author with lots of potential and I look forward to his next book.
Rating: Summary: Charlie "Bird" Parker meets The Godfather & Hannibal Lecter Review: If the Prologue doesn't knock your socks off then your stomach is made of iron. This is one scarey book that will keep you up reading or checking your doors to make sure they are locked! If you've read the Godfather and wanted more mafia then read Every Dead Thing. If you've read Silence of the Lambs and wanted shear terror...then read Every Dead Thing. It amazes me an Irishman knows so much about New Orleans and New York. I read his book and felt like I was there; the worst parts of the cities, but colorful never the less. Good read, keeps you awake and looking under the bed for "THE TRAVELING MAN." Can't wait for his next book.
