Summary: A "shaggy-ape" story, overlong and too predictable
Review: Yet, if you want detail and (mostly) good Robin Cook, CHROMOSOME 6 is readable. Interesting West Africa locale parts, though, are the only winners. There is one totally useless character who has MUCH too large a role: Candace. The Epilogue assumes we are interested only in the American protagonists (though omits Melanie, who was also American). Now, I have no real concern for Candace, but I would like to know if she did, indeed, end up institutionalized. And I would have liked to know whether Kevin landed on his feet . . . or on somebody else's. And as far as the folks I might like ever to see again--Jack, Laurie, Lou, Warren, Natalie, bonobo #1--Warren and his wife get very little play in the Epilogue, the bonobo none at all. Probably it should not have been called an epilogue. Maybe just "New York: le fin." But is it? The whole shaggy-ape omnisciently narrated tale could well have been a prequel to Planet of the Apes. Most sorrowful of all... at the end of Chaper 19 (for any reader who didn't already know) Melanie says: "It's hard to believe: we're prisoners of our own creations." Perhaps I'd just come to expect better, tighter Cook, especially after TOXIN (which almost made me a vegetarian). But, hey! An upside for the lay reader: a Glossary at the very end. While many entries are helpful, the variant definitions of "chimera" delighted me--Greek mythology and literature most common, but also includes biology and genetics applications.

Much of this book I enjoyed, but the flaws (a few not mentioned) prevented the "willing suspension of disbelief." Sorry, Dr. Cook.

Summary: Chromosome 6 was an extreamly good book But too confusing.
Review: Chromosome 6 was the type of book I'd like to read but it had too many characters and if you read chromosome 6 before contagion you don't really know what the main character's history is. It was a good book.

Summary: Some one forgot to put an ending on this book!!
Review: Chromosome 6 was a very face pace read. The intensity was very well wriiten. I wish Cook would do shorter chapters. In the 90's it makes it easier to put the book down and then come back to it. The book has it's Cook typical characters - those who have a very high degree of scientific background but seem unable to see beyond their own eyes. The reader figures out the plot before the characters every get around to it. I would have rated the book higher but the ending left me in a lurch. Three of the best characters suddenly disappear at the end with no trace or mention in the text. Also both bad guys are left still in Africa. The only thing that we know is that our two heroes make it back home. Where is the rest of the book?

Summary: Interesting, Puzzling and fast moving
Review: It is a little more "outdoor" plot. Usually Dr. Cook's books doesn't take you to different parts of the World. But this one does travel back and forth between US and Africa. The only thing that I thought that was interesting was the fact that the main character was getting the clues to solve the puzzle out of the blue. The Author could have been little more careful there, but that is the way it goes in lot of books.

Summary: I read this as 'Science Non-Fiction'. So realistic!
Review: This is an excellent five star novel. Basically, I prefer nonfiction. Most of the (SF) novels seem to me too unrealistic and childish. But this story was so reasonable and so realistic that I (researcher, M.D.) was able to fully accept and enjoy it. The only concern is that some words may not be easy to understand for non-medical people although the author has a talent to explain them in plain words.

Summary: Why Can't I Give this Book Zero Stars?
Review: Good premise, but the writing was worse than awful. Cook doesn't write these things himself, does he? I think he is just a brand --- they've got some penny a word hacks with damaged chromosomes putting this stuff together.

Summary: Typical Cook
Review: This book was typical Robin Cook. The voices were excellently done. As with many of Cook's books, keep a dictionary handy to look up the many medical terms used.

Summary: A very first rate high tech mystery novel!
Review: This is a great read . I loved the characters, especially Stapleton. The mix of the Mob and medical scenarios involving transplants kept my attention thoughout. I enjoyed this read so much that I am currently reading Contagion because the characters here were introduced in that work. I can see the possibility of a sequel because of the inevitable ending. Gene manipulation in any species could open a Pandora's box of trouble for future generations. I read one or two books a week and the only other book that I've liked this much is, Alien Rapture, by Steiger, which is also a mystery thriller. Go Cook, I can hardly wait for future novels from this medical stylist. -
