Rating: Summary: Good Until the End Review: This was a fast paced book and extremely enjoyable. The plot and characters were terrific. The only bad part was the ending. Left way too many lose ends. Never found out what happened to the main characters.
Rating: Summary: Not The Best Cookbook I've Read Review: Robin Cook, doctor turned writer, has produced a bundle of popular books in the "medical thriller" genre. I've read most of them, so it is fair to say that I generally enjoy Dr. Cook's work. His medical knowledge and use of topical ideas from the health care field make his tales intriguing, and they are always fast-paced. Unfortunately, character development is not a priority, and Cook's plots have tended to become increasingly predictable and far-fetched.CHROMOSOME 6 is an improvement over some of Dr. Cook's other recent books. He divides the action between the U.S. and an African research facility, and he raises some genuine concerns with regard to cloning and bio-engineering. Also, he brings back a likeable protagonist (Dr. Laurie Montgomery) from a previous book. The action is non-stop, so boredom isn't a problem. On the downside, though, Cook's plots have become very predictable. There is plenty of action but few surprises. Characterization also remains a problem. Besides the general lack of depth, Cook's mafiosi are so stereotypical that they're more laughable than sinister, and the behavior of the two main female characters at the African site in the face of mercenary troops and flying bullets is totally unbelievable. Finally, as several other reviewers here have mentioned, the story ends quite abruptly, as though the author suddenly ran out of space. CHROMOSOME 6 isn't, IMO, Robin Cook's weakest book (I'll leave that honor to INVASION), but it's a long way from being one of his best. Unless you're a diehard fan, I'd advise that you skip this one. There are lots of better books out there, including several of Cook's earlier efforts.
Rating: Summary: Maybe I read an abridged edition Review: I didn't prefer this book. I thought it left some areas un answered and unclear. It was not as well written as is many other books. Though I may have read an abridged edition.
Rating: Summary: he said, she said, they said Review: This is the first and last Robin Cook mystery for me. I listened to part of it on tape and gave up at the beginning of the second cassette. The story promised to be interesting but the dialogue was so awkward that it was a punishment to listen to. You can often really appreciate good writing when you hear it spoken by a good reader. This came off as very uninspired. Does this author know synonyms for "said"? After reading the comments about the ending I'm glad I gave up early. Good writing can be found in everything written by James Lee Burke.
Rating: Summary: As fascinating as ever Review: Typical of Robin Cook.Great combination of Genetic Engineering and Forensic pathology with quite brave doctors.I learnt in Embryology about the short arm of 6th choromosome and MHC -histocompatibility complex proteins but only Robin Cook can run his imaginations to write a whole book with one piece of information.
Rating: Summary: intriging premise/ponderous writing style Review: I couldn't help but wonder how much better this book would have been written by Michael Crichton! Cook tends to approach intriging themes with a very ponderous, awkward style. Slow moving with really awful dialogue.
Rating: Summary: Good all the way through... until the ending :( Review: The book was wonderful; it kept me at the edge of my seat most of the way through. I really think Cook is a prolific author and has good medical insight (which just makes for more plausibility of the book), but the ending kind of disappointed me... Nevertheless, this book really got me into Cook's books, and now I'm reading my second book by him (outbreak). I'm grateful of my genetics teacher, who made us read this book! Way to go Dr. Cook!
Rating: Summary: That's it???? Review: This was such a page-turner and the story-line is so true-to-life that it's almost scary. However, just as I was thinking "this a GREAT BOOK", the author abandons the story. There was no resolution to the action packed body. It almost felt like he had reached the maximum page limit and just stopped there. It's not a cliffhanger, just a solid brick wall. Thumbs down
Rating: Summary: Chromosome 6 Review: To start with this is the first book I've ever read in the past 15 years. Those who love forensics and medical experimentation will surely love this book. In general you don't need to be a medical expert to be able to follow thesense of the story with all it's medical terms here and there. I am not a medical expert at all. The only thing which I have to criticise is that at times there are so many characters thrown in the story all at once that you start to lose count of who is who. Apart from that the novel is very well presented.
Rating: Summary: wheeeeeeeeeeee- - - - - - THUD! Review: Having read the other reviews I might tend to be repetitive but honestly this book had me reading till some late hours & skipping a few hours of work as the build up had me really keyed up. Then the bonobo's & their development on the island was fascinating but then suddenly the book ends-- it was as if some one had torn out the last part of the book. I feel like telling Robin Cook to "zit" (go) & write the end properly & mail me a copy coz it is only then that I intend to reinstate him back as a "good" writer
