Rating: Summary: Retired Submariner 1955 through 1975 Review: It is exciting to read a submarine story that feels like you are there. The author has done his homework. The future setting of the story makes the technical liberties possible and the point is made that we are letting down to much on our military readiness. World War III will follow II as II followed I unless we heed the lesons of history. Is this book a great fiction or a preview of things to come? Have lots of time when you sit down with this book, you will not want to put it down.
Rating: Summary: Deep Sound Channel, Relentlessly Exciting Review: It's difficult to believe this is Joe Buff's first novel. Written with the maturity you'd expect from a much more seasoned author, Deep Sound Channel quickly grabs you and shows you one possible future on a US Navy nuclear submarine. In a near-future limited nuclear conflict between major powers, the author masterfully depicts the turmoil, pain, and dedication of submariners in a high stakes conflict between good and evil. His apparent knowledge of submarines lends believability to the ultra-complicated, and demanding world in which these remarkable people live and die to preserve a way of life. With enough action to hold the reader's interrest throughout, the author develops his characters to the point where the reader shares emotional highs and lows with them. A thoroughly satisfying novel that will engross action buffs looking for a good read.
Rating: Summary: THERE IS A NEW TOM CLANCY IN OUR MIDST! Review: Joe Buff has created a new genre. The technology is amazing yet realistic. Specifically, who would have thought there is a device on nuclear submarines that can see through solid rock and map the seafloor terrain all around the ship, namely the gravimeter. Jeffrey Fuller is a highly competent yet believable officer who commands not only the respect of his crew but of the reader. An outstanding first novel. Looking forward to the second one, "Thunder in the Deep."
Rating: Summary: a glimpse of the future? Review: Military planners are trying to look ahead 10 years. They can stop looking, and start reading Deep Sound Channel. Deep Sound Channel offers a chilling look at the future of warfare, both biologic and nuclear, where stealth rules the roost. The story is non-stop action, and drips with authenticity. Joe Buff is an excellent storyteller, and it sometimes seemed as though he was there, and was simply a friend recounting a story he would just as well forget, but never could. All in all, a page turner, and highly recommended for fans of the technothriller, submarines or the future itself.
Rating: Summary: A very good read Review: Mr. Buff has written a novel to be proud of. The action is non-stop and the characters are believeable. If I had only one quibble, it would be that there could have been more background as to why the war was being fought with the weapons as described in the book (I won't spoil it for you, but it is exciting). Maybe I'm too used to Clancy with his deep background, but a little more detail on the why's and wherefore's of the origin of the conflict would have been nice. But it's definately worth a read, and much to the concern of the Amazon people I'm sure, I have five friends lined up to borrow this book.Go on and order it, you won't be dissappointed.
Rating: Summary: naval suspense thriller Review: Now,when nuclear submarines fill the news, Joe Buffs' thriller has uncanny timing. For techno-thriller readers a new author of great adventures has arrived. Packed with suspense and a real knowledge of submarine warfare, Deep Sound Chanel sets a new high standard of fiction. You cannot put it down, except to think more about it.
Rating: Summary: Nuke 'em Review: Reads like a cross between a tech manual and a romance novel. I liked the gadgets but don't expect to have to fix one, and either do most XOs by the way. This author tosses atomic bombs around like black cats on the 4th and that is what kept me reading. I'll read the sequel if I can find it at the library.
Rating: Summary: Really terrible Review: Sorry I bought this one. A sophomoric attempt at a novel. Naive plot. Impossible scenarios. Dhould be classed as science fiction for 3rd graders.Sorry there is no rating below 1 *.
Rating: Summary: Okay submarine procedural Review: The most interesting aspect of this novel may be the author's deciding to resurrect WWII adversaries by hypothesizing that Germany and the U.S. will be after each other again in the year 2011. I mean, the actual WWII is over and the Soviet Union is no more, so who is a worthy adversary for U.S. military might? The maneuvering of the high-tech subs involved in this cat-and-mouse procedural is entertaining enough but a bit repetitious. We certainly learn a lot about subsurface mountains along the way. After suffering all the travail the two boats go through, I found the ending a bit of a letdown. All in all, this novel is on a par with similar sub thrillers of the past.
