Summary: Unworthy
Review: I could follow the motives of only the lead character. The others were either sketchy or unbelievable. The motive behind the crimes is not believable. I found the adult male victims' responses to the perpetrator's threats to be ridiculous and could not sympathize. Their responses being a crucial device to this story, I subsequently found no suspense or entertainment in it.
When the chase is over, the perpetrator is many things in one person, too conveniently so. In the end, there is no rationale given as to what the treatment was supposed to have been. The subplot involving the lead character's brother ends undecidedly.
Overall, I found the book unworthy of recommendation. One reads at one's own risk some visuals which may be difficult to erase.

Summary: More chilling than Hanibal Lecter
Review: I couldn't put this book down but would have to walk away for brief moments to collect myself, the villain was so perfectly twisted. Can't wait to read Mo Hayder's next book. Definately worth the read if you like twisted plots and constant concern for the antagonist.

Summary: the treatment
Review: i feel that this book is the best that many peaple have read in a very long time. mo hayder is a brilliant fantastic auther. it had me awake till 3 in the morning as i could not put it down until i had finished it was the same with birdman. i hope that MO hurrys up with the next book as life is getting frustrating waiting for her. i know that she will be working just as hard to make the next book as thriling and scary and gory as the last two keep up the good work and pen to paper and be quick.

Summary: Serious read
Review: I just finished The Treatment, after just finishing Birdman. Reading Birdman made me go right out and buy The Treatment. The Treatment is intense on many levels - the graphic details and twisted minds of the bad guys and the psychological issues Caffrey (the good guy) is dealing with. Some poeple will be shocked at the graphic details and frustrated by a protagonist who is unable to deal with his own problems (or an author who won't let him), but if you like thrillers that are intense and dark and complex this is for you. Mo Hayder know how to write a book that you can't put down.

Summary: A little heavy on the 'shocking' for my taste.
Review: I like detective novels, even serial killer detective novels, and I don't generally think of myself as faint-hearted. But I have to say that _The Treatment_ made me feel rather faint-hearted. Or faint, anyhow.

Jack Cafferty investigates a case which has disturbing echos to a case from his personal history. The kidnap of an entire family and the ordeal suffered by the boy taken from the house of the family lead Cafferty into the underworld of pedophiles, pornography, and killers.

Well-written, but the scenes with the children are really quite awful and I sometimes had the uncomfortable feeling that the book came dangerously close to exploitation-- the descriptions were quite explicit, honestly too explicit for my tastes. Still, probably a question of taste, but be aware what you're in for when you pick up the book.

Summary: Shocking beyond words....
Review: I rarely find books to be as "horrific" or "mind blowing" as the reviews claim them to be. But "The Treatment" knocked my socks off. There are not enough words to describe how bone chilling the plot is, and the ending is the most shocking I've ever read. It makes you wonder if Mo Hayder is: a) extremely creative, b) exploiting events that happened to someone somewhere, or c) just a touch sick in the head.

I didn't read "The Birdman" and I'm not sure I'm going to, at least for a while. There's a lot of unspeakable evil in the world that the average human can't even imagine. How much of it we want to bring into our lives via paperback books is something that we each have to decide for ourselves.

Until I can shake the nightmarish images created by "The Treatment" out of my head, I think I'll loose myself in "chick books" for a while.

Summary: A thrill you won't forget!
Review: I read Birdman first. I couldn't put it down and thought it was a thrill ride through the entire book. Before I finished it, I ordered The Treatment so I could further the ride. I agree with the other reviewers that The Treatment is slow to start. I think it's because Mo Hayder wanted people that hadn't read Birdman to be able to have some background on Jack, so it was a bit lagging to us that wanted to hurry up and get on with the rest of the ride. If you can get through the first half of the book, the rest is just "a loss for words" a non stop heart pounding, emotional ride. I finished The Treatment last night and was so upset I wanted to scream. I surely was touched emotionally through this whole book. I know I will never forget this book or it's story as long as I live. No other book has bothered me as much as these two have. I sure hope Mo Hayder writes a third book. I really felt connected to the people in these books and don't want it to end. I could see their faces and feel their pain and emotions while reading. What a ride. After reading these books, I looked for her website to write her about my reactions and thank her. All I could find was a website that is in the making "mohayder.net" . I hope she gets that site up and running soon with a message board. I'm sure it will be rewarding for her to see how many fans she has out there that are waiting for a THIRD book.
These books will change you. I give them both a 5 even though the second book was slow to start,, the rest of the book, you will never forget!
Thank you Mo Hayder! Please continue onto a THIRD!

Summary: WOW.
Review: I read The Birdman last summer. I loved it. So much so that I actually ordered The Treatment from England as sson as it came out. And I just reread the American printing.

To sum this book up quickly would use the words dark, twisted, and wonderful. Not for the easily freaked out, but if you don't mind dark books you will love it.

Jack Caffery is back, and still haunted by his little brother's disapearance from years ago. A case he is working now stirs it up more than any other has. He doubts his objectivity, his relationship with his coworkers and his girl freind as a result.

Mo Hayder sets a pace with her reading that won't let you go. I honestly read this in one sitting. If you read Birdman and liked it, you will love this. If it helps, I find it kind of a cross between Ian Rankin's Rebus, and John Connoly's Charlie Parker books.

Summary: Plenty of Shock; very little suspense
Review: I really enjoyed 'Birdman'; particularly for the way the author gave us insight into both the 'good' and 'bad' guys. I was anxious to read the sequel, 'The Treatment', hoping that Hayder would find an equally interesting story for Jack Caffery. Unfortunately, I find 'the Treatment' to be an almost formulaic repeat of 'Birdman'; with many similar plot elements. I could guess many of the plot developments. Although the topic of pedophilia is as taboo as necrophilia was in 'Birdman', this just felt like Hayder wanted to be shocking, not suspenseful.

Summary: WOW!
Review: I've been reading and watching mysteries/horror/thrillers since I was 10 (I'm now 32) and I'm pretty desensitized to some of the gore and wackiness in these books (please don't interpret as bragging). So for me, I've found that many books which are supposed to be "emotional rollercoasters" are actually fairly run-of-the-mill. This book ain't like those. This book is a punch in the gut. My jaw was hanging loose in shock through the last one third or so of the book. I finished the book 5 days ago, and I'm still thinking about it, turning it around in my head, thinking about how it relates to my own life. It's hard for me to get my head around it. I appreciate that the author was able to elicit that kind of response from me, so it's a great book for that reason. But other reviewers are correct, the huge emotional response is not a pretty one, so be ready for that. The ending is tidy, in a sense, but not really what you expect. Fortunately, I don't see how the book could have ended any other way, and I appreciate that the ending wasn't overly "Hollywood". Oh, and I haven't read The Birdman first, and was still very much able to appreciate this book. Am planning on going back and reading the first book now.
