Rating: Summary: A verbal portrait English aristocracy in the 30's and 40's Review: I was initially bored and impatient with the endless detailed discriptions of trivia and the slow moving, halting story line. It eventually dawned on me that the author was not telling a story but was painting a picture of the life of English aristocracy during the latter part of the 1930's and the war years and that the story was merely a vehicle to tie the parts of the picture together.
Rating: Summary: Not one of her best Review: I ploughed my way through this lengthy novel, wishing it would come to an end. It was, sadly, predictable and full of idealistic, unnecessary description. Things were not tied together properly - when a character was introduced, you could predict with certainty for what purpose, and not really care about it anyway. Once the purpose of the plot was served the characters were dumped. There were moving moments, but really the "heaven on earth" Nancherrow and its angelic inhabitants began to drive me nuts. It was just too long, and too boring in the effusive and unnecessary decription of "perfect" English lifestyle in the thirties and during the war. Read Nevil Shute, or D.E. Stevenson for a better idea of what it was like then, and get better writing to boot. It sure wasn't heaven. Rosamunde Pilcher's editors need to do their job better, by cutting out some of the junk and also by correcting some of her bad writing! Sometimes the construction of sentences and the grammar really are irritatingly clumsy. I shall not be buying the hardback!
Rating: Summary: Live in a different time and place Review: The audio version (which unfortunately is abridged) is read by Vanessa Redgrave, who does a marvelous job of the different voices. Her lovely accent matches the grace and timelessness of this romantic tale. Having previously read the book, I did note the edits and would have enjoyed it all the more in its entirety.
Rating: Summary: Excellent is an understatement! Review: I try to save my 5 stars for truly spectacular books and this is one of them! I received the hardback as a gift a couple of Christmases ago & it seemed such a waste at the time. Rarely do I find a book so compelling that I would want to pay four times the paperback price when, chances are, I won't read it more than once before I pass it off to a friend down the road. This, however, is a book that I will definitely be keeping on my bookshelf! I have always been interested in the 1930s & 40s and this novel gave me a great glimpse at the past. This is by far Rosamunde Pilcher's best novel. I could not put it down!
Rating: Summary: By far one of the best books I've ever read Review: This book is incredible! It should be made into a mini-series. I've never read a book that made me feel so much for the characters.
Rating: Summary: I couldn't put the book down! Review: I was on pregnant bed rest when I bought this book. My parents were upset with me, my fiance had run off, my three best friends were at college out of state. My comfort and solace was in this book which I devoured in six hours and have read God-only-knows how many more times. Her characters are well developed and they seem to step out of the book and become real. I cried over Edward's situation and rejoiced for Loveday and Gus and found Judith's determination and stamina to face difficult circumstances empowering and inspiring. The muses were definitely dancing for Ms. Pilcher when she wrote this book. Another pregnancy is looming and my new husband, upon finding this book so well read, has offered to buy her other novels for me if I have to go onto bedrest. Talk about mixed emotions-- I almost see it as an incentive for bedrest!
Rating: Summary: Excellent compelling reading Review: Having seen the TV drama adaptation,I had to read the novel. This proved much better than the TV version as a lot of the story had been missed out. About a young schoolgirl Judith Dunbar, who is from a middle class family in 1930's England. She is left at boarding school whilst her family are in Singapore. The story surrounds her growing up and her friendship with the Carey-Lewis family who live on Nancherrow estate in Cornwall. The story follows her life from school days and through the war years. There is friendship, heartbreak and finally hapiness in this compelling novel. It's so good I read it in 2 days!!!
Rating: Summary: Totally Loved it! Could not put it down! Review: I truly loved the book and had a hard time putting it down when I would go to work. I became so involved, I became the main character.
Rating: Summary: You won't want it to end! Review: This is an endearing story which details the life of a fourteen year old girl, Judith Dunbar, growing up in pre WW2 England. When her mother and younger sister, return to her father in Columbo, we are invited into Judith's life, as she makes new friends, finds a new home and finally love. For those of you who love to get to know your characters inside and out, and get lost in the story, this is for you. If ever a book deserved a sequel it's this one.
Rating: Summary: Coming Home is a rare book to behold! Review: If you enjoyed any of Rosamunde Pilcher's previous works, you will treasure "Coming Home". Pilcher once again manages to combine literary art with warm, beautiful characters that you can easily open your heart to. Judith is to be admired for her bravery and compassion. The Carey-Lewises's made me laugh, cry, and laugh again. They made you rejoice for Loveday and Gus, and pity Edward. Pilcher creates a family that you feel is your own. I have read this book more times than I can count, yet I will read it again and again.
