Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: Poorly constructed "adventure" novel Review: This debut novel was displayed in the front of both Borders, as well as, Barnes and Noble, with both stores pushing it as a superior and fun summer read. It should be a swashbuckling adventure novel but it has to rank as one of the most poorly constructed books I have read in quite some time. Alex Hawke witnesses the death of his parents aboard their yacht by pirates when he was a child. He has since grown to adulthood and works for both the CIA and British secret service. He is assigned to look into the disappearance of a Soviet sub that could launch strikes against the US mainland. Of course, his assignment eventually takes him into the direct path of his parent's killers. Don't waste your time on this downright idiotic almost unreadable work.

Review: The book "Hawke" is an ok adventure novel, though the story was poorly edited and Research was lacking. The errors were so blatant that even average people who read thrillers could notice the mistakes. 'obviously' was overused. There is a story in there but it definitly needs more polish. Mr. Bell should fire is editor, recall all the books and start over.

Review: If you think they don't write 'em like they used to write 'em, you've gotta check out HAWKE by Ted Bell! It's an adventure in the grand tradition of classic sea epic storytelling and could not be more fun. Every character comes alive on the page and you get swept along towards a thrilling conclusion. A welcome addition to the ranks of thriller authors...a brand new classic!

Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Jolly Good! Review: First: a good read, a page turning thrill of a read. First effort: The parallel story lines, particularly early on, seem a bit too obviously an exercise in setting the chessmen in motion upon the board. Chapter 33 ends with a gaffe -- an observation from an omniscient narrator. The last two lines of this chapter should have been omitted. But the telling of the tale is compelling enough to warrant forgiveness for such offenses. Highly recommended.

HAWKE caught my eye, mainly because it was a thriller, the only 'non-literary' title that made this year's list. I read the review, a rave, and I read the book and, yes, it's a thriller. It is also, as Library Journal says, "0ne of those rare novels that more than lives up to the usual PR puffery and author blurbs...this rip-roaring tale is made entirely believable through convincing detail, with a grand hero in Hawke. Various flawlessly developed story lines contribute to the high octane pace, and the fully developed characters are delineated through nuances of voice. In short, this is a commercial blockbuster packed with pleasure." Couldn't say it any better myself. Do not miss this one.
Rating: ![1 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-1-0.gif) Summary: A pretentious, abominably-written book Review: This is without a doubt one of the worst novels I have come across in decades. The publisher (Simon and Shuster) must have gone to press based on the, who knows, friendship with the author, since it obviously wasn't reviewed by an editor, much less a proof reader Worthless, even as a gift.
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: Fabulous Tale Review: This is clearly the most exciting thriller I have purchased in months. It was well worth the trouble to drag on my last trip in hardcover. I liked it so much, the paperback will be a staple in my briefcase. Give it a try, it is definitely not one to be miss!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: A RATTLING GOOD TALE!! Review: I don't read many thrillers myself, being more of a history buff, but a friend insisted I read his loaner. If this book is any indication, I'm mending my ways! What a good, good read, and a 'what-if' scenario about Fidel that is entirely plausible and frightening. The author did his homework and the reader reaps the rewards with just enough Cuban political history to keep me happy, without slowing the onrushing train of a story down one iota. Thriller, indeed! Good stuff. More of it! And soon, please!
Rating: ![5 stars](http://www.reviewfocus.com/images/stars-5-0.gif) Summary: STUNNING!! Review: Hawke, Alex Hawke. This is a day I thought I'd never see. A fictional hero stepping into the very big shoes of 007. You keep waiting for him to trip, all the way to the pure gold ending but he never does. Cuba, and a Castro coup, is a great departure from the run of the mill. The thing about it is a hero so instantly likeable and with such believable detail that it is completely absorbing. I was sorry to see it end. I am eager to see many sequels. Stunning. Absolutely stunning.
